Preliminary & Ongoing Pairwise Watch and 2013 NCAA Tournament Musing Thread

The geographical center of the country is in Kansas

OnMAA wrote, in regard to dave1381's instant recall of the correlation between seasonal results for the Pats and the Crimson women: "Now that was impressive. Must be a Boston thing."

Impressive, but not unusual. Yes, truly there's no end to how intensely parochial Boston sports fans are, or how encyclopedic their memory across sports and across decades. Of course we can correlate the Pats and the Crimson women; could we correlate Tom Brady's stats with Peyton Manning's stats? Of course not; Peyton Manning never played in Boston.

And we're a bit blurry about Drew Bledsoe and Steve Grogan and Jim Plunkett, because although they played QB for the Pats for many years, they didn't play locally beforehand. But Brian Dowling is another story, because he played four games against Harvard, and Doug Flutie is another story because he played for BC and, more importantly, Natick High School; never mind that they were only backup QBs (/dropkickers!) in the NFL. And Butchie Songin, the Pats' initial (pre-NFL merger) co-QB, had played for BC and, more important, Walpole High School, and could be seen playing pickup hockey on Walpole's Memorial Pond while playing for the Pats.

Pop Quiz: Who competed at the Boston Garden in more different capacities, Lenny Ceglarski or Teddy Donato? (Answer: Donato, as a schoolboy (Catholic Memorial), collegian (Harvard), national team member/Olympian (exhibition game), NHLer (Bruins) and college coach (Harvard)).Whereas Ceglarski was at the Garden only as a collegian (BC) and college coach (successor to Snooks Kelley at BC); he competed at the Arena as a schoolboy (Walpole), at Watson Rink as coach at Clarkson, and nowhere locally as a national team member/Olympian unless it was on the outdoor rink at Belmont Hill with the Cleary brothers.)

So that's just a slice of how intensely parochial Boston sports can be (did I mention that Lenny Ceglarski was my fifth-grade teacher?)

I'm curious whether this is the case elsewhere, particularly in Minnesota with its extensive high school hockey network? Do the same people keep popping up at different levels of the same sport from cradle to grave?

There are those people like Neal Broten: phenom for Roseau H.S. at the Minnesota State H.S. Hockey Tournament; scored one of the more famous NCAA championship game goals; played on the Miracle on Ice team; and played for the North Stars before winning a Stanley Cup with New Jersey. The difference is that in Boston, everything can happen in once city, where events in Minnesota will be much more sprawled out around the state.

Another way of looking at it is this....A lot more places to "hide in the weeds" in Minnesota compared to Boston/Eastern Mass. :D

Or maybe folks in Boston have Nutting better to do, while people in Minnesota go hunting and fishing.

It would be more interesting if the CHA actually had an auto bid.

Duh. Sorry, my bad. It was past my bed time when I posted and wasn't thinking clearly. I've been accused of that even without sleep deprivation.

I love it when it all comes back to whoopie pies...... classic!

Maybe our new Secretary of State (who's from Boston) will employ whoopie pie diplomacy in his international dealings, and maybe that will lead to World Peace!

Hate to disappoint you all, but The Centre of the Hockey Universe is Toronto, aka The Big Smoke, aka Hog Town. (Much to the chagrin of most in Ontario that do not live in the GTA).

I dunno. Lots of fights and conflicts in the past as a result of Whoopie.... :)

Agree that lots of players get their start in "Small Town" Ontario. However stand by my premise that the GTA is considred the Centre of the Universe when it comes to hockey, both in the Boys (GTHL), Girls (PWHL/LLFHL) and Pro (Leaf Nation) side of the house.

THe HOF and TSN are both housed there as well.

BTW...Not from the GTA and not part of Leaf Nation.

Re: Preliminary & Ongoing Pairwise Watch and 2013 NCAA Tournament Musing Thread

Looks like another extremely challenging path to the CHA Championship for MercyHurst. Hope they can survive!

Re: Preliminary & Ongoing Pairwise Watch and 2013 NCAA Tournament Musing Thread

Conference playoff updates... Final scores...

BU 4, Providence 0

Cornell 4, St. Lawrence 2

... so now only Northeastern is left as a potential bracket buster. Their game against Boston College just started.

Re: Preliminary & Ongoing Pairwise Watch and 2013 NCAA Tournament Musing Thread

Mercyhurst solidifies their position with a 4-1 victory over Syracuse to win the CHA title.
