Pre-Season Predictions

Edwin Shea was decent, but certainly not a "high quality" defenseman like Domoulin or Cross. And AGAIN, you refuse to accept the fact that BC has in fact been very successful when skating 3 or more freshmen on defense, as in several trips to the NCAA final. Also, you don't replace seniors with freshmen. The underclassmen replace the seniors and the freshmen replace the underclassmen.

The fact that they've been successful doing it in the past is no guarantee that the transition will be smooth this time. Shea might not have been as good as Domoulin and Cross, but not many defensemen in college hockey last year were. His loss isn't insignificant, especially when he's being replaced by a freshman.

Defense is the toughest position to transition to NCAA hockey at. Again, I don't think it is unreasonable to assume that BC will see a noticeable decline in defensive play next year. Especially to start the season.

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

generally a goalies' statistics are the result of the team in front of him (Yann Danis, notwithstanding).. I think all he is saying is that Milner is not going to have the defensive corps in front of him that he had last year... therefore "his" numbers are going to suffer

what is wrong with saying that?

I'm not sure where you're getting your ammunition from. Generally, yes. But there are also great goalies and guys who go through great stretches of play. Milner played great down the stretch. I never said BC would have a great defense in front of Milner or that he would replicate the numbers he had last year. In fact, I said the biggest factor for the drop in numbers will be because of the different defense in front of him. There is nothing wrong with saying that.

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

To start the season you will probably see the 3 returning D-men and Matheson (who should be able to step right in and play at a fairly high level) playing a ton of minutes. The 3rd pairing will likely be brought along more slowly but will be fine by the second half of the season. On the other hand, they may just go with one Frosh on each of the 3 pairings and spread the experience around. There is no guarantee of anything in sports, but going on past history, you'd have to think BC will be more than fine on defense next year.

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

I would bet BC makes the tourney but then to collect I would have to meet him. Yuck.

"The only winning move is not to play."

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

Just wanna throw an idea out there, how about Michigan for National Champion? It's pretty much guaranteed that they'll make the tourny. It's been what, 22 consecutive times? Yea, we're breaking in a new goalie but heck, we had a walk-on the past couple of years and we still made the National Championship game. We've got an awesome class coming in, assuming they all do actually go to Michigan instead of the OHL. Michigan traditionally has younger players, and and will be 15 years since out last title. It's time. I'm not calling it but this is the final season of the CCHA before it dissolves and both Western Michigan and Ferris State are playing very well right now. That will make Michigan better in the long run.

Thoughts?

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

BC and then everyone else. year in and year out, its been this way for quite awhile

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

I don't think they will average as many goals this year. They will feel the losses of Kreider, Almeida, and Carey. And they will have some issues getting the puck up to their remaining forwards because of their defensive losses. I think they'll be in the +0.75 goal differential range. Maybe lowet. A bubble team.

You do realize you could've said the same thing last summer after losing the top 4 scoring forwards from the 2010-11 season and substitute breaking in a new goalie for new D right?

BC lost a greater percentage of their goals after 2010-11 than they did this offseason...

I know, I know, why bring facts to a rational discussion?

First of all, I have provided plenty of factual evidence to support my opinions. Maybe you haven't read the entire thread closely?

And this isn't last year and your losses aren't the same. Instead of repeating myself, go back and re-read the thread.

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

Define "quite a while". And not this year.
I'll believe its somebody else when I see it. I take it you're a Minnie fan. I can see them also but Jerry York is a god and everyone else is a mere mortal. Quite awhile started in the late 90s, while they haven't won it every year they certainly have been in it most every year since then. BC is by far the best program in D1 hockey

No disrespect, because I have a lot of respect for what BC has done since the late 90's, but BC has not been a clear favorite (and in some years even a favorite at all) in every year since the late 90's. This should be one of those years in my opinion.

OK, but the frozen four is held at the END of the season.

I'm a western region guy, but there is no denying BC is the premier program in the nation and I am a little embarrassed for anyone who would like to discount them in July.

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

They may not win it all again, but right now it's pretty hard to find at least 14-15 teams that will be better than them.

Who ever said they aren't a premier program? Please don't put words in my mouth. Not picking a program to make the tournament one year because of turnover is not disrespecting the program.

And yes, the Frozen Four is at the end of the year, but I think they will struggle defensively early, and then be average defensively by the end of the year.

I didn't say A premier program, I said THE premier program.

One program that I expect to have less success than last season would be Minnesota. No doubt last season was kinda a fluke. They would be an example of a "good" or "decent" program.
