Pre-Season Predictions

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

No disrespect, because I have a lot of respect for what BC has done since the late 90's, but BC has not been a clear favorite (and in some years even a favorite at all) in every year since the late 90's. This should be one of those years in my opinion.
Are they the best program in Div 1 right now? There is no rational argument against that statement. Then why wouldn't people pick them as their preseason #1. It means nothing in the end, the NC is won on the ice. Am I going to take BC against the rest and bet my home, nope but if I had to pick one, they're it and Jerry York is why

No rational arguments why? Seriously? Come on. They lost 3 starting defensemen and 2 of their leading scorers. Meanwhile, a team like Minnesota is returning 7/8 of their leading scorers, all of which had 20 points or more last season. And everyone defensively.

I think BC is going to struggle this year. Especially early. But I can respect the opinion that they will have a good team this year. I can even respect the opinion that they will be a Top 5 favorite. I don't agree, but i can understand why someone would say that.

But I don't see any rational reason to say they should be considered the clear cut, definitive favorite. And there are plenty of "rational reasons" to think that.

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

Just off the top of my head

1. Minnesota
2. Boston College
3. Western Michigan
4. North Dakota
5. Cornell

6. Michigan
7. Wisconsin
8. Union
9. Notre Dame
10. U-Mass

I'm sorry but I had to call you out on this one. Wisconsin? You really think their turnaround is going to be that dramatic? I don't even think they finished 7th in the conference last year. That is a big jump in one year for a college team.

Once again I have to point out how wrong this is. The NC is not won on the ice. It is won on message board speculation of what is going to happen 8 months ahead of time.

I had Wisconsin 11th on my preseason predictions. They should be a significantly better team this year, and it looks like they'll finally have a goal scorer to pair with Zengerle (who, as I said before, I think will have a Hobey-esque season). Couple that with a sound blueline and decent goaltending, and I think they are a top-4 WCHA team, and could be very strong by season's end.

The glaring name on his list is U-Mass. Now, if he is talking about Lowell, then yes, I can see them at #10, but the Minutemen will struggle in Hockey East this season. I wouldn't consider them a top-20 team, let alone top-10.

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

Sure. They're idiotic.

I have a pre-season prediction...

I'm taking Dubbie versus the field for USCHO's worst/most grating/most ***-hattish poster of the 2012-2013 season.

There'll be other regional qualifiers, but overall, I'm confident in my prediction. Even 8 months out.

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

As other's have pointed out, the foolhardiness of making predictions this time of the year is shown again and again. What is kind of funny is JDUBBS top 5 prediction is eerily close to INCH's -- Minnesota, Michigan, UND, Union and WMU.

Of course, last year INCH had:
1. Miami
2. Notre Dame
3. UND
4. Yale
5. DU
6. Union
7. BU
8. CC
9. UMD
10. Michigan

They pretty much nailed that.

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

I don't care what they lost, their program is still the best, they might not win it all this year, they might suck and only make the Frozen Four, who knows but in the last 15 years BC towers over the rest, therefore I'm picking them as preseason#1. I wish I was picking Maine though:D

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

Here's another way to look at it...

#1 Seed: (11 Teams due to tie in '06-'07)
Best Finish: National Champion (Minnesota '02-'03)
Worst Finish: Did not make tournament (4 times)
Mode Finish: Did not make tournament
Mean Finish: 10.00 (Regional Semifinalist)

#2 Seed: (9 Teams due to tie in '06-'07)
Best Finish: National Champion (Boston College '07-'08)
Worst Finish: Did not make tournament (2 times)
Mode Finish: Regional Semifinalist (4 times)
Mean Finish: 8.78 (Regional Semifinalist)

#3 Seed: (all the rest have 10 teams each)
Best Finish: National Runner-up (Boston College '05-'06)
Worst Finish: Did not make tournament (Colorado College '08-'09)
Mode Finish: Regional Finalist (5 times)
Mean Finish: 5.9 (~ Regional Finalist)

#4 Seed:
Best Finish: National Runner-up (New Hampshire '02-'03)
Worst Finish: Did not make tournament (2 times)
Mode Finish: Regional Semifinalist (4 times)
Mean Finish: 8.5 (~ Regional Semifinalist)

#5 Seed:
Best Finish: National Champion (Michigan State '06-'07, Boston College '11-'12)
Worst Finish: Did not make tournament (2 times)
Mode Finish: Regional Finalist, Regional Semifinalist, National Runner-up, Did Not make tournament, National Champion (2 times each)
Mean Finish: 6.8 (~ Regional Finalist)

#6 Seed:
Best Finish: National Semifinalist (Minnesota '04-'05, North Dakota '06-'07)
Worst Finish: Did not make tournament (Boston University '03-'04)
Mode Finish: Regional Semifinalist (6 times)
Mean Finish: 8.2 (Regional Semifinalist)

#7 Seed:
Best Finish: National Champion (Denver '04-'05)
Worst Finish: Did not make tournament (3 times)
Mode Finish: Regional Semifinalist, Did not make tournament (3 times)
Mean Finish: 9.2 (Regional Semifinalist)

#8 Seed:
Best Finish: National Champion (Minnesota Duluth '10-'11)
Worst Finish: Did not make tournament (Ferris State '03-'04)
Mode Finish: Regional Finalist (3 times)
Mean Finish: 5.8 (~ Regional Finalist)

#9 Seed:
Best Finish: National Champion (Boston University '08-'09)
Worst Finish: Did not make tournament (6 times)
Mode Finish: Did not make tournament (6 times)
Mean Finish: 12.2 (~ Regional Semifinalist)

#10 Seed:
Best Finish: National Champion (Wisconsin '05-'06)
Worst Finish: Did not make tournament (2 times)
Mode Finish: Regional Finalist, Regional Semifinalist (3 times)
Mean Finish: 8.0 (~ Regional Semifinalist)

Outside of Top 10:
2 National Champions
3 National Runner-ups
11 National Semifinalists

What that tells me?
Most likely (80% chance) that the National Champion will be ranked in the preseason top 10
At least 1 Frozen Four participant will not be ranked in the preseason top 10
At least 2 teams in the preseason top 10 will not make the tournament

I'm sorry but I had to call you out on this one. Wisconsin? You really think their turnaround is going to be that dramatic? I don't even think they finished 7th in the conference last year. That is a big jump in one year for a college team.

I think they are going to be much better than people think. They really started to put things together at the end of last season.

Yes, I was speaking of Lowell. Sorry, typing on my phone so I tried to keep it short. Assumed everyone would know what I was referring to. Probably should have just said Lowell :p

Do you mean Amherst or Lowell? "U-Mass" generally refers to Amherst, which would be the single stupidest prediction in this whole thread if true, though you seem like you're not an idiot and likely meant Lowell.

See my post above. I meant Lowell. Typing on a phone and took an unfortunate lazy shortcut :p

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

1. BC
2. WMU
3. MN
4. U-Mass Lowell
5. UND

I think if there is a darkhorse team that everyone is down on and that could do some damage is DU. I know that they lost the trifecta of D. Shore, Zucker and Bennett early, I get that, and don't forget that they lost the Goal Czar and Lee too, but they're a team that just seems to reload every year. Losing Drew Shore sucks, but having two Shores softens the blow. LaLeggia, Makowski and Phillips may be the most talent anyone in the country has in three blueliners (especially bc I don't think Phillips has shown all that he is going to at this level yet by far) and they are getting BACK the most important player to their chances Brittain. They also have a goalie or two that can push him and give him a night off as well.

And for the record, UW is nowhere near my top 5. They're not in my top 5 in the WCHA. If they get some goaltending I think they can make the tournament, but I don't even know if they'd make my top 20.

Re: Pre-Season Predictions

After much thought, my pre-season top 5:

1. Michigan
2. Wisconsin
3. Minnesota
4. MI St.
5. Ohio St.
