Scooby found this as part of an article written about Guiliani from a reputable source. It appears Guiliani is attached at the hip to OANN. Personally I am trying to figure out or fathom why half our population has decided to go down the rabbit hole permanently and completely disengage from civil society.

R-A-C-I-S-M What part of that are you not getting. The entire population of people who remain in the GOP as Trump supporters are driving by racial fears. There may be differing degrees of paranoia, but its all about not wanting people who don't look and act like them from obtaining power.

More like R-E-S-E-N-T-M-E-N-T. The red/blue divide is about the cultural resentment of the WWC.

They've never been in control but it used to be the power elite threw them a bone to keep them under the thumb. So, we sanitized the public sphere to appeal to their mindset. You can't show boobies on US TV because of Ma and Pa Kettle. Everything used to be done for their benefit. And that's because the people who actually control the country have always exploited these people. They murder their children in wars and ship their jobs overseas and steal from their pension accounts and bilk the treasury for taxes and then make them bail them out. The sugar they washed this down with was public cultural dominance. The American public square still looked like a 19th century town in Kansas years after a majority of Americans lived in multiracial, forward-looking cities.

And finally the dam broke and public culture started becoming democratized. We got rid of prayer in public schools because it was clearly unconstitutional. We legalized abortion because it's a matter of basic civil rights for women. And these people went apesh-t because they have been treated as snowflakes for the last century, with every one of their prejudices and superstitions catered to by politicians and wealthy people who then went home and lived the lives that everybody outside of Pigs Knuckle, Arkansas (and most people in it) live. We stopped being hypocritical. And the church going women with their hate-pinched faces despised that. And the kind of Moral Majority Christian guy who goes to strip clubs and slaps around his wife and forces his mistress to get an abortion couldn't stand that his public morality (not his lived one) was being shoveled under as a myth.

So they threw a fit, and here we are.

Kep I think what you wrote is true for the 1980's and why people embraced Reaganism for example although that Moral Majority Do As I Say Not As I Do movement predated him. But those people have croaked, or have a new boogeyman to fear. Really, its all about trying to turn back the country to where there were less non-white people and you could use racial epithets in polite conversation with zero fear of any consequences. Once you make that leap, and you are driven by the notion that non-whites are taking over and turning America into wherever they came from, you suddenly become willing to put up with a lot. For example, you will freely welcome Russian interference in American elections even though you lived through the Cold War, as long as their interference benefits the party (Republicans) trying to turn back the clock. You will poo poo a guy having unprotected sex with a porn actress while his 3rd wife is at home with an infant because putting the darkies/brownies in their place is much, much more important.

This is why policy doesn't matter to these people. You could show them the math that M4A for example will benefit them, they could actually understand it, and then they'd STILL turn around and vote Republican to beat back the non-white hordes which is their #1 issue. Its a big reason why we're seeing the educated/non-educated split in the country's voting patterns now.

It's not educated vs. Uneducated. Plenty of Trump supporters went to college and have high paying jobs.

With the population migrating from rural to urban in droves you would think the rural folks would be the biggest supporters of immigration from Central America, and DACA.

There's a cool infographic that I now of course cannot find that this is only the second great American immigration wave that has hit rural America as hard as the cities. The first was the homestead acts period in the middle of the 19th century. It resulted in a spike in ethnic violence in rural communities and the formation of secret societies to terrorize immigrants. Country mouse really likes oppositional identity formation. The motto of the farm belt might as well be "get the rope."

Typically, immigrants filter into the country through the cities. This time immigrants are also taking root in rural America, and the rural population is responding exactly like it did when it was Germans and Irish murdering each other.
