Re: POTUS Elect Trump II: Lefties whining and regurgitating fake news

I have this amazing montage playing in my head of Donald trump crashing through the poorest neighborhoods on a bulldozer *cuts to* him walking around with two huge bags of cash *cuts to* him throwing wads of cash down to billionaires beneath his escalator *cuts to* him slapping some homeless guy in the face and stealing his shopping cart *cuts to* some guy left to die because his Medicaid was taken away, single tear running down his cheek *fade to black*

All to some stupid music like "born free" or something that has that same sappy quality to it.

You've been watching too much Rachel Maddow.

Like I said, the EC is a formality and if we're going to keep it as a system, it should remain a formality. I'm just as annoyed at the attempted Clinton defectors, as I am anyone who contemplated breaking away from Trump. You should not get to ignore the voters and decide who is POTUS just because you got gifted a spot as an elector thanks to your brother-in-law, Rep. Billy Bob McRube III, in a little "quid pro quo" deal for giving the maximum donation to his campaign last year.

If we're going to go down that road, then we should be going to a straight "popular vote rules" system. I'd rather have 130M voters decide, than 538 partisan hacks.

EDIT: Just checked. Laughing at the Paulinista in Texas.

Except the founding fathers (well three of them) explicitly said the electors have that option if necessary.

If the EC resulted in an actual change in late December, I'd be more worried about the country than anyone who was elected.

So, the big decider was the Russians releasing the stuff the Dems really said to one another. Oh my God, what a horrible act, to let the American people know what the political class says to one another.

And here I thought foreign influences in US elections was grounds for freaking out: see, e.g., SOROS!!!1!!, Clinton Foundation non-scandal

This is 2016, not 1800. The founding fathers never envisioned the two-party system, and probably never figured on electors being chosen as partisan favors. The US has too much at stake on the world stage to leave it to 538 corruptible dolts who greased enough palms and/or kissed enough arse within their respective party ranks to get the elector role.

Times change. Middle America is dumb enough to vote for the guy who is going to give it to them in the shorts. We all deal with it. The only alternative, is a straight popular vote, and that will never happen in our lifetimes because it would be the end of the Republican Party.

The founding fathers created the two party system, so I'm guessing they did envision that part...

You're right, I derped there. I sometimes like to dream about an America in which the part of Washington's departing address that addressed political parties was heeded.

???
he's making them listen to the carpenters?!?!

There's always Steppenwolf
It's Never Too Late
Steppenwolf

Lyrics
Your eyes are moist, you scream and shout
As though you were a man possessed
From deep inside comes rushing forth
All the anguish you suppressed
Upon your wall hangs your degree
Your parents craved so much for you
And though you're trained to make your mark
You still don't quite know what to do

It's never to late to start all over again
To love the people you caused the pain
And help them learn your name
Oh, no, not too late
It's never too late to start all over again

Well, it's much too late to start again
To try and find a little bliss
So on your woman and your child
You release your bitterness
You drift apart some more each day
You feel the guilt and loneliness
And the God of your childhood you can't find
To save you from your emptiness

It's never too late to start all over again
To love the people you caused the pain
And help them learn your name
Oh, no, not too late
It's never too late to start all over again

You say you've only got one life to live
And when you're dead you're gone
Your family comes to your grave
And with tears in their eyes
They tell you, you did something wrong
"You left us alone"

Tell me who's to say after all is done
And you're finally gone, you won't be back again
You can find a way to change today
You don't have to wait 'til then

It's never too late to start all over again
To love the people you caused the pain
And help them learn your name
Oh, no, not too late
It's never too late to start all over again

So instead, New York and California should dictate how the rest of the country lives? Real inclusive of diversity there...

meh, the small states already get a disproportionate representation in the Senate, I'd be okay with going to a straight popular vote for president (and I live in a small state)

Re: POTUS Elect Trump II: Lefties whining and regurgitating fake news

The final EC tally: 304-227 (the general election had it 306-232)

The Rogues:

HI: Clinton to Bernie Sanders
WA: Clinton to Colin Powell
WA: Clinton to Colin Powell
WA: Clinton to Colin Powell
WA: Clinton to a Spotted Eagle
TX: Trump to Kasich
TX: Trump to Ron Paul

Re: POTUS Elect Trump II: Lefties whining and regurgitating fake news

Let's be clear. Assuming you could get Congress to propose a constitutional amendment to do away with the electoral college, it would then have to be ratified by at least 38 of the 50 states. Thus, the very states whose ox would be gored by eliminating the electoral college would have to vote to approve it.

Notwithstanding the dim view some of you take of our more rural states and the people in them, I personally see zero chance of those people to take that step. Once global warming kicks in and we force people in California, New York and Florida to relocate, there may be a window of opportunity, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Thus, any sort of discussion regarding the elimination of the electoral college, especially when done in conjunction with election results that one side is particularly sore about, does nothing but undermine our system of seamless and peaceful transitions of power, which is bad, imho.
