POTUS 46.10: A New Hope

This, I think, is where I stand.

Just to play devil's advocate. We've never left Japan or Germany.

They passed something to get 8,000 translators evacuated a couple weeks ago, fwiw. And if either had kept suicide bombing us for decades, we'd leave. The only reason the British stayed in Northern Ireland through the Troubles was because they had been there for centuries and it's right next door.

You cannot compare why we are still in Germany and Japan with why we are still in Afghanistan. Very much apples and oranges.

And yeah get the interpreters out...which we are trying to do.

It's fine that we're leaving - but can they do better to not leave interpreters et al to their death?

Yes, of course.

Those people are human shields for the Empire. We aren't staying for them. Using them is a last ditch effort for the interests who are profiting by the Forever War.

If Lockheed, Raytheon, and Northrop cared about them so much they would have hired them, sponsored them for SIVs, and gotten them and their families out ten years ago.

Do it today and get outta Dodge.

Sure, in 2021. I completely agree.

Pretty much since the end of WWII. (especially in Germany thanks to the Cold War)

We have zero business in Afghanistan anymore. Once the Surge!!1!! failed the war was pointless. We aren't the UN we don't get to just decide we can be an occupying force there for decades holding a peace. That isn't how it works.

really? Just like that we became allies overnight and were welcomed in Germany forever? And Japan?

Apologies for the snark.

I mean, we firebombed Dresden and nuked Japan. I have to imagine those weren't exactly rosy relationships for the first decade after.

aaaaaaallll of that said, I still agree it was time.

We did more firebombing in Japan than we did in Europe. Our firebombing campaign killed 300k+ Japanese, far more than the two nukes did. Dresden was less than 30k.

initially, the US keeping bases there were conditions of the two nations’ surrender to the US. After a while, both nations started to recognize the economic benefit of our troops being there, spending our money there, and grew to like it, or perhaps just tolerate it.

Which is kind of my point

Did you think donnies original may 1 date was better? You realize Biden pushed it back to September?

So Biden should get credit for doing something Trump wanted to do? I don’t have an issue with the idea of getting out of Afghanistan but the execution could not have been any worse and the women there are going to be the ones to pay the price.

It sounds like the capitulation is complete.

What is happening there is what would have happened if we had left a month after first getting there, or we left ten years from now.

We never had any set goals for what we wanted to accomplish there, nor a plan to attain them. Without either, then why are we there?

He just needs the sweet release of blaming a dem after four years of seeing his orange boy drool all over himself

As state of hockey said earlier, this would have happened exactly the same had this been in 2002, 2022, or 2052.

The fuck up came when we drew lines on a map for them. When was the last time that region was truly autonomous and self-represented?

I get that, I just wish we could have gotten the decent people out before those terrorist ***** take over. And I feel so horrible for the girls and women there.

Biden is the first politician I’ve ever donated money to and I like him a lot. Not really sure why people think I’m itching for a chance to criticize him.

If Alexander, the British, and the Soviets couldn't make Afghanistan work, what was a half-assed American effort ever going to accomplish?
