POTUS 46.10: A New Hope

I’ve posted things like this before, but on the cruise board I’m on, the number of complainers of totally packed ships with astronomical fares just keeps going up. And few remember the last time the economy actually sucked, prices went down a LOT. It’s hard to compare a $50/nt cruise in 2009 to a $300/nt cruise now for the same cabin at roughly the same point prior to sailing.

The economy is really humming these days.

I’m not sure it means what you think it means. Obviously there are a lot of people with a lot money, but I think there are a lot of people who have given up on buying a house, saving for retirement, paying off their mortgage, etc and instead are happy to go on a cruise or go see Taylor Swift. Peoples priorities have changed and I’m not saying it’s right or wrong.

You want to spend a few thousand bucks on a weekend excursion to see Taylor Swift but it's Biden's fault when you tell some pollster you can't buy a house. That's what is wrong here.

I feel for the people our economy and our society leaves behind. But the fact is, that has been the same people forever.

I know so many people "struggling" to make ends meet that make some of the worst choices a person can make. They often make as much or more money as me, and I am well paid. And yes I know the choices you make are limited by the choices you have. I am not talking about people who have very few good choices. I'm talking about people who complained about $5 a gallon gas while driving their Ford F350, and complained about how expensive it is to feed their kids when they go to Arbys 6 times a week and smoke and are covered by $10,000 worth of tattoos. Or the people who hate their jobs and complained about their "ineffective" unions but who opted out of paying union dues because they work in a so-called right-to-work state or in the public sector.

This comes off as poor-shaming people.

Not spending $2,000 on a one off trip isn't going isn't going to allow someone to afford a $400k home. But maybe it allows that person a mental break and allows them the opportunity to make some lifelong memories.

It's exactly how Boomers/MAGA's use the "Avocado Toast" or "Starbucks" analogy.

That’s because you believe what you are told instead of questioning it. While I’m sure there are people giving up on retirement, but as a recent retiree, I also see how my retirement funds have totally recovered, so it’s hardly everyone. And that is reflected in the across the board corporate profits.

Also, I’m capable of recalling the last significant recession, when consumption of luxury goods went down so much that they are cheap to get.

Home prices are high because demand is really, really high. Meaning in spite of people putting it off, there are more buying in.

Again, there are people living beyond their means- that happens all of the time. But not this many people over an extended amount of time for the premium they are paying.

I feel for those who are struggling. There will always be them.

Iirc, you also bought into the fabricated fear that Obama was coming for your guns.

No but if you spend 2k on a show while also complaining you can't feed your family it falls on deaf ears and that is what i happen to see a lot of.

People have been living on a pipe dream for too long. Not everyone can afford everything but we have all been fooled to believe we should be able too. We trade cars in that run fine (and pay monthly instead of saving) we buy top of the line goods and replace them on a whim and we buy houses we don't need and can barely afford and oftentimes sell them without really living in them. (Thanks HGTV) This country is fueled by people never thinking longterm...it's all about maxing out now.

I am not poor shaming...my life was lived on the poverty line and I only have the opportunities I have because I got lucky who I ended up with. Otherwise I'm still poor and likely never considering owning a home or a car from the last decade.

Not at all. It's "if you are an idiot with money then obviously you are never going to improve your life or your children's, generation after generation after generation, no matter how much you pray to your fictitious god and no matter how much you hate all the people your relatives hate" shaming, and it's good.

Accountability.

There are people who can't make it because they never had a chance. But righties fail to make it because of their pathetic combination of entitlement and victimhood, capped off by ineptitude and deliberately cultivated ignorance, and they deserve everything they get.

Just remembered some perspective to add to this- between 2009 to 2023, the cruise company I’m sailing on went from a nominal 63000 total double occupancy berths to 91000. Mind you, this latter number is quite low, as I’m counting the biggest ships at 5400 instead of their normal +6000 due to the family cabins that have more than 2 people.

So this company has ~50% more people sailing now than in the Great Recession and prices are way higher now due to the demand. I know most cruse lines expanded a lot over the past +10 years, let alone the addition of a totally new cruise line.

Supply is more than it has ever been in history, yet demand is so high, so are fares. Tell me again the economy sucks. I’m very much not seeing it.

Come on media, find more reasons to say why gen z hates joe!

here’s what he did today:

“Biden just blanket pardoned all marijuana possession cases regardless of whether there’s been a charge or conviction.”

We should retire the term "media." There is no news anymore, just entertainers who retweet social media.

Stop quoting them or paying them any heed. They are just mirrors of misinformation and thirst traps. Abandon them.

No, keep the word "media"- that way we know that it's not really news.

Media doesn’t mean news, it’s to denote the method of distributing mis/information. Let’s not rewrite the language because some Jack ***es are abusing the tools at their disposal.
