That's the thing. It's not too difficult to see some sort of extrapolation of the 2000 election. The one good thing is there is a significant gap between election day and and take office over day. So, all the legal shenanigans can happen quickly in the background. Whoever gets elected can just find people from the Obama Administration and before to help with the transition. Anyone who thinks anyone from the Trump administration is going to help with that is either high, drunk, or mentally ill.

The core problem Democrats have, and why the Republicans get away with what they do get away with is, Democrats believe in Government. To this day, Amy Klobuchar believes she can "work" with Republicans. And if you believe in the rule of law, and believe in the United States you ultimately have to believe you can work with these people.

But, you can't. And that is the dilemma facing the Republic.

And we have the 8 years of the Obama Presidency as proof of this fact.

Yes, Democrats do believe in government. Government can work and make things better for people.

What Democrats need to understand is not that government isn't good. It's that the people on the other side have no interest in making government work, or making things better for people. People who don't make millions of dollars and give thousands of that to them, that is.

I believe we are going through a local maximum of reactionary violence brought on by primitives coming face to face with the modern world for the first time. This is the common factor of Islamic terrorism, Christian fundamentalism, and the resurgence of racism and xenophobia. When failed cultures are confronted by the full measure of their obsolescence they respond with retrenchment into religious, racial, and nationalist myths.

The rise of the right is the hoarse scream of cultural tissue already necrotic and decaying. It has no future so it dreams of violence. It has no ideas so it balls up its fists and clenches its eyes and butt cheeks and fantasizes about killing everyone. This is how millennarian cults die: they scream for their god to whisk them off to heaven because they can't hack it here on Earth, and they wail for retribution against those of us who enjoy and thrive in modernity because our example lays bare their failure and worthlessness.

It's bad but it doesn't go on forever, and it does not matter provided they are carefully sequestered from all power. They will kill themselves off through their incapacity to live as adults. We simply have to protect ourselves and contain them. They'll do the rest. Those weapons they fondle will be turned on each other.
