I think a generation of mainstream media running scared about the "both sides" issue is the reason making any real progress from now on will be almost impossible. For 3 decades now the CNNs, CBSs, NBCs and all of the other media outlets that pretty much were taken at face value for most of the television era have all been spending more time than not trying to make sure they look balanced. And because of that they have allowed voices that have nothing useful to add to the public discourse a valuable seat at the table.
We've always been lazy consumers of news, but now the mainstream media is so scared of losing viewers, advertising dollars or someone investigating them they fall victim to "bothsiderism" on a regular basis. It dulls the sense of outrage people need to be feeling. I imagine the same thing would have happened if the media would have spent an equal amount of time listening to the few Nixon supporters and seeking them out as if they had a legitimate reason to have the megaphone that was TV news. But the press realized there was no legitimate reason to give those voices airtime, since they would do nothing but propagate lies and misinformation. Just like Kellyanne Conway and trump's congressional mouthpieces and water carriers do everytime they are on the air.
trump lovers could read the same things all of us read, and watch the same news all of us watch and 99.9% of them will scream "fake news" and believe it. Of this I am certain. Our only hope is that there are still more of us than of them, and we all show up at the polls.

Each news outlet needs an in-house "fact ombudsman" to check the factual content of the interviewee. Deny them airtime if they are lying. Newspapers have a desk editor, tv, cable and streaming need the same. They need an objective entity like Snopes as an in-house organ.
Obviously Fox' will promptly ignore everything counter to the fantasy programming of their orcs and perpetuate their brainwashing. So be it. The other 90% of news media will stop putting Dump and Conway et al on. They will not quote them any longer. We don't quote Kim Jong Un when he lies on camera. We report that he lied about something and perhaps opine on why he did. Same should go for Dump.
The news media have to take their responsibility as a filter of information seriously. If they merely relay the lies they are a disease vector.

I read it and agree with it wholeheartedly. A couple of comments though. If you are worried about authoritarianism why on earth would you support gun control? Its not a lot compared to the firepower of the government but surely it’s better than nothing. As hard as it is to believe, Trump is only about 10% of our problem right now and I hope once he is out of office people don’t fall back asleep. We have major challenges ahead both domestic and foreign and no easy answers.
