Re: POTUS 45:47: I Never Said There Was No Collusion!

Huh, one of the bills actually got a majority. Seems like an up-or-down vote should be allowed to help end the shutdown.

Re: POTUS 45:47: I Never Said There Was No Collusion!

6 Goopers voted for the Dem bill, which is about 4 more than I would have expected:

1) Alexander (TN) - Retiring, so no more fuks to give
2) Collins (ME) - 2020 re-election in Dem state
3) Gardner (CO) - 2020 re-election in Dem state
4) Murkowski (AK) - Likes the media attention
5) Romney (UT) - Likes the media attention
6) Isakson (GA) - ???? Can't figure that one out.

There are a lot of well paying Federal contractor jobs in GA. My father used to have one of them back in 60s and 70s.

Re: POTUS 45:47: I Never Said There Was No Collusion!

And here we go- dumpy's plan did indeed go down 52-47.

But the basic funding bill went down 52-44, where 6 R Senators supported the D bill- Collins, Alexander, Romney, Murkowski, Isakson, and Gardner. Mitch is losing his grip.

edit- Rover got this first, but the #1 takeaway is that there is more chance that R's will break off for the basic funding plan vs. the D's for the dump deal.

The question is, how does this end?

Two ways. Trump caves in. Certainly likely, but who here wants to take a stab at when that will be, especially with Pelosi and others trying to embarrass him over it at every turn.

Or, Congress overrides a veto. 67 senators and what, 290 members of the House? That's going to take more than a few people like Collins and Murkowski moving.

Pelosi won't move for political reasons. I'm not sure you can get enough (R) Senators or Representatives for political reasons.

So, we just wait until Trump caves?

Re: POTUS 45:47: I Never Said There Was No Collusion!

The federal workers who aren’t receiving a paycheck aren’t reason enough to deal with Trump?

Trump's only objective is a useless, exorbitantly expensive monument to himself, and he will burn whoever and whatever is necessary to get it. Do you need to ask?

Works for me. The guy who caused all this should be the one who gives in. Unless you're a card carrying Trump Humper I don't know why you'd see it any other way. As soon as Mexico writes us a check we can start construction. Deal? In the meantime lets re-open govt.

Why would Trump cave? His base is gone if he caves, might as well burn it all down

Don't negotiate with terrorists.

Isn’t there a difference between an enemy and a terrorist? I think if the Dems offered to meet Trump halfway on the wall money it would strengthen their position.

It will be interesting how the shutdown effects incumbents. People look at it in left-right terms, but I think it might claim some victims from both parties in 2020.

MAGA :p

Fixed.

HA! You just go on believing that one sparky! Next thing you'll tell us is if they give Trump 75% of what he wants they'll strengthen their position even more! :D  :D

And therein lies the problem.

I don't want to see $5 spent on a border wall, much less $5 billion. Undoubtedly Pelosi and the Dems are extracting a great deal of joy out of torturing Trump politically, and I'm sure if the shoe were on the other foot the Republicans would probably be doing the same. That's the problem. People would much rather achieve political gain than any sort of resolution.

I don't think giving in to Trump on the wall is a solution, but if someone really wants to try to find a different solution with him it can probably be done.

Not buying your both sides do it schtick, but nice try.

Same way I feel. Telling Trump to pound sand isn’t really trying to find a solution.

Like re-opening the government in the meantime while sides debate the wall?

Re: POTUS 45:47: I Never Said There Was No Collusion!

The solution was already found a month ago, it’s Trump who’s kicking and screaming over the wall.

Yup. If Chump wanted the wall so bad, he could have either 1) inserted it into that ridiculous tax package from last year, or 2) convinced the GOP Congress to pass it when they had a majority in both houses of Congress. Its not the Dems job to stop him from looking stupid.

The "solution" is simple. Chump agrees to re-open government and the Dems agree to fund some border security but not an ineffective wall. At that point if Chump wants to redirect some previously approved money to put up a few miles of fencing to give people like Drew and Hovey a boner have at it. Everybody's happy and Chump learns a hard lesson in compromise when dealing with a divided government.

I don’t support the wall, but I also don’t support the shutdown.
