The way he handled Jeb and the others during the R primary shows that he at least had his finger on the pulse of the Republican base and was savvy enough to pander to them.

I don't think so. Trump stumbled into it and I am convinced he never thought he'd win. That's not a sign of intentional decision making. Trump is an accidental tourist.

Re: POTUS 45:47: I Never Said There Was No Collusion!

So I just saw a CBS interview with Ross about this, and he HONESTLY thinks that people should just go get a loan to cover their pay.

I'm not kidding. You can see this exact comment in the middle of this news thread- https://www.cbsnews.com/news/wilbur-ross-doesnt-understand-why-federal-workers-are-using-food-banks/

Loans for your lost pay.

Literally banks will be making money on the backs of unpaid government workers.

That's BEYOND out of touch.

He's not a planner. But his instincts particularly in terms of his base are uncanny. For too long the rest of us were all spoon fed the notion mostly through the media that the GOP base was grandfatherly country club types who were more interested in fiscal issues but who tolerated the Jerry Falwell wing of the party. In reality its been a white supremacist cult since Nixon's day.

He's telling them to eat cake.

His approval rating with Republicans exceeds beyond his base of deplorables.

Re: POTUS 45:47: I Never Said There Was No Collusion!

So on another thread, there was an article about 90% of the stuff dumpy has done on his own has been thrown out in court.

One of those biggies is DACA- which the SCOTUS let a lower court's judgement stand that dump could NOT end DACA the way he wants to. So that whole thing about offering a deal to D's is 100% BS, as he can't even offer a deal to let something keep going that he can't end. Even more reason for D's to just ignore this offer, as he's offering 100% nothing.

It was interesting to see the light come on at National Review and Weekly Standard after Dump won the nomination. They realized all at once that Republican voters had never cared about small government or entrepreneurship and that it had always been all about undereducated, poor, white racists seeing rich black people on their teevees and screaming for revenge.

Lee Atwater was right. The (R) stands for resentment.

Can't forget that "the deal" wasn't a deal for two big reasons- it was temporary, and dumpy's ending of DACA was blocked by the SCOTUS.

Totally ignoring the small items in the bill that make one want to puke.

There's no reason to deal when dumpy took 100% responsibility for the shut down, and he also promised that Mexico should be paying for his wall.

There's nothing to bargain with. And based on the fact that turtle boy didn't even bring this to committees to discuss and improve, well... it's BS wall dressing.

The federal workers who aren’t receiving a paycheck aren’t reason enough to deal with Trump?

You mean "for Trump to deal"? When in doubt, go with the bill that's passed two chambers of Congress already.

The federal workers who aren’t receiving a paycheck aren’t reason enough to deal with Trump?

Trump caused the shutdown, wanted the shutdown, eagerly said he'd take responsibility for it.

He needs something from the Dems, it's up to him to offer them something in return.

But here you are, supporting Trump again. Remember, part of this campaign promise was Mexico was gonna pay for any wall. You're ok with him not following through on that?

How do you feel about other politicians who don't fulfill their promises?

The federal workers who aren’t receiving a paycheck aren’t reason enough to deal with Trump?

They're the reason you don't deal with Trump. It's not in those workers best interest to reward Trump for taking them hostage. He'll just do it again next time.

What deal was being offered? That wasn't a deal, that was "I want my wall". Which is no change.

D's have a funding bill, passed by the House. Pass it, sign it, and workers go back to work, and Congress can negotiate the wall- like they are supposed to do. Not hold worker hostage for the wall.

And that ignores what was done BEFORE the new term.

dumpy is "dealing" in bad faith. If he's so worried about workers, like you pretend to be, just sign the basic funding bill and move on.

Re: POTUS 45:47: I Never Said There Was No Collusion!

6 Goopers voted for the Dem bill, which is about 4 more than I would have expected:

1) Alexander (TN) - Retiring, so no more fuks to give
2) Collins (ME) - 2020 re-election in Dem state
3) Gardner (CO) - 2020 re-election in Dem state
4) Murkowski (AK) - Likes the media attention
5) Romney (UT) - Likes the media attention
6) Isakson (GA) - ???? Can't figure that one out.

Re: POTUS 45:47: I Never Said There Was No Collusion!

So here's the risk- dumpy's proposal gets defeated 52-47 (need 60 to win). And the straight bill gets defeated 50-49 (need 60 to win). Both loose, sure.

But right now, it seems the odds that the straight bill gets R converts is a lot better than dump's bill getting D converts. Far, far more people want the government just open, and a gross majority don't want a wall. If all of the anti-our taxes going to the wall people call their representation- there would be a good chance there's enough to override.

And if that happens, it just shows that Mitch is a poor leader. Heck, if any more than the 3 decide to vote for the very temporary bill- one could say that Mitch should have had the votes weeks ago, and he's a terrible leader. It would make the easiest way to run against him of all time "You had the votes to end the shutdown in the first days, and you didn't"....

Mitch has nothing, other than a title, for his legacy. The judges were not his idea, the tax cut wasn't his idea, and the tax cut almost didn't happen like the health care bill. A good leader would have had that in the bag.

And here we go- dumpy's plan did indeed go down 52-47.

But the basic funding bill went down 52-44, where 6 R Senators supported the D bill- Collins, Alexander, Romney, Murkowski, Isakson, and Gardner. Mitch is losing his grip.

edit- Rover got this first, but the #1 takeaway is that there is more chance that R's will break off for the basic funding plan vs. the D's for the dump deal.
