Re: POTUS 45.4 - What's a Battle?

The price from the rest of his family staying in Trump Tower is going to dwarf any other President's cost even before travel gets involved.

Re: POTUS 45.4 - What's a Battle?

Every time his horde goes on a business trip you can add to the bill. The last trip (by Eric I believe) ,to SA was over $100k for a few days.

Re: POTUS 45.4 - What's a Battle?

I wonder how much of this is accounting versus expenses you wouldn't have if he didn't travel. The golf and travel complaints from both sides are pretty lame.

One hand I think this expense issue is unfortunate in that it draws attention away from the truly scary things Trump and his agents are doing. But do you become exhausted from constantly trying to rationalize and cover for the staggering level of incompetence and dangerous decision making we are seeing in this president, Drew? Do you ever ask yourself?

Did TR used to go on safari as president? That's the only figure I can imagine even coming close. And for all I know he paid his own way.

Well, somehow I managed to miss this yesterday:

Re: POTUS 45.4 - What's a Battle?

Would've been great if he'd shown this much spine during the election cycle. Rings pretty hollow now.

It certainly does. While I am glad someone -- anyone -- in congress on that side of the aisle is saying anything, its still too little and probably too late. For all his obvious hatred of Trump he's voted to confirm every one of his cabinet choices. Even those Rs who have voted against a couple of them (or indicated they would in the case of the original nominee for secy of labor) are only mostly quietly opposing the choices on the grounds they are not qualified instead of opposing them on the grounds that the moron who nominated them is dangerously unhinged and it stands to reason his nominees are all getting a shot for all the wrong reasons.

Re: POTUS 45.4 - What's a Battle?

Bill Maher made a good point on his show this week about ignoring the clown f-cking the horse and keeping your eye on the real action. Maybe it will help to simply drop all of the moral argumentation against Trump (and believe me, one could develop an entire catechism about the ways in which the Republicans in general and Trump is particular violate pretty much every human moral norm) and simply address the purely cold, logical effects. For example, Pruitt is no doubt a monster, but the destruction of the EPA will result in x more babies contracting disease, y more people developing tumors and illnesses from unsafe drinking water, z more thousandths of a degree added to the acceleration of global warming.

As others have pointed out if you are trying to get a Trumpette to see the light the way not to do so is by dwelling on all the normative deficiencies of the contemporary US right. Of course those are absolutely true, but fulminating on them won't accomplish anything. Instead, we should stick to the facts of how damaging R policies are. Let the moral conclusions take care of themselves.

And yes, obviously, ensconced in their echo chamber and attached to the hate radio feeding tube very few Trumpettes will ever comprehend, let alone accept, the enormity of the holocaust they have unleashed. But by definition, if you're talking to one, in that moment they are for once talking to somebody reasonable. We can use that small window to vent our frustrations, or we can provide them with some factual information to break their programming. This is very much how you reach people in a cult, and there is a large body of lessons learned for what works and what doesn't.

Facts don't matter anymore when Trumpettes can just make up their own on the fly, or call yours "fake news".

Actually that was post-presidency but I suppose if we extended protection as we do now it would have been enormously expensive.

I was thinking that if we had the type of presidential security that we have now, JFK, essentially a billionaire, would have also been extremely costly. I'm guessing he still was, but obviously we didn't do nearly as much then as now...

I recall that Reagan occupied a pretty politically tenuous position both in his own party and with a large majority opposition in Congress right after the election. Until he got shot, that is, then he became totally unstoppable.

It may suck but kicking in a couple of extra bucks a piece to blow on extravagant security for Trump is probably worth it for everyone involved. The country has changed a lot, but not THAT much. If Trump gets shot, (or maybe worse, Ivanka) Bernie, Warren, Shumer, et al, may suddenly be reduced to carrying candles and holding a midnight prayer vigil for the President...

New Rule was better. If Obama had said what Trump said about the US not being so innocent, all the usual suspects would've immediately decried it as a part of his "Apology Tour" and cited it as proof that he hates America.

When Trump says it, he's correct because the CIA and FBI are full of globalist killers who are out to get him. "The Magic R" at work.

I was defending Obama and every other president too. For people to ***** and moan about how much golf they are playing or where they are traveling is a complete waste of time.

Re: POTUS 45.4 - What's a Battle?

Sorry but this is a recipe for disaster. At some point voters need to take responsibility and exercise their civic duty. Republicans would vote for a potted plant or an escaped lunatic from the puzzle house for President if they thought it would help pass their agenda. If Democrats insist every candidate needs to be JFK/Obama type inspirational candidates, they will continue to lose because those people only come along once in a generation if you're lucky.

Maybe it Dems find their social programs cut to fund tax cuts for the rich and a defense buildup, the EPA abolished, 20M people losing health coverage, and a return to 50's era voting restrictions they'll wake the fuk up and actually vote. Dems had a pretty robust turnout operation but you can't use cattle prods on people the last time I checked.

Whatever Mr. "She's got it in the bag". Apparently the prospect of voting for your goddess didn't exactly send a tingle down their leg. People get paid an eff-ton of money to generate interest in, and make voters excited about their chosen candidate. That Hillary, and her people couldn't do that(twice now) is all that needs to be said.

Why should anyone listen to what you have to say ever again?

Obama never spent the first three weekends of his presidency golfing, and his wife never was in a separate state requiring her own security and his kids never jetted off to a foreign country for business requiring even more security. And did I mention this happened in the first 30 days of his presidency??

I agree with this Kep. But by the same token, you need to get your own house in order too. When I read people defending some ridiculous gun law, which even the ACLU is against, it puts me in a tough spot. And how about this nonsense http://deadspin.com/espn-sued-by-tennis-broadcaster-fired-over-venus-willia-1792355949 For people who are traditionally republican it's hard to switch teams when the other side is supporting really unsavory stuff, even when you are unhappy with some of the things your own party is doing. The ESPN thing isn't necessarily a political issue, but I think most people associate the hardcore PC stuff with democrats.

An honest question for you...how many people do you really think are being influenced by Alex Jones and all the fake news out there? I went on youtube and a lot of his recent videos only have around 40k to 50k views. There is no doubt him and other far right media sources have an influence on some people, but I can't imagine it is more than a couple million people at most and Trump got over 60 million votes. You and others want to think there is this vast group of tens of millions of really hateful, nasty people out there who are supporting Trump and it doesn't match with reality.
