I dunno. I think he could have easily taken more of a McCain approach. I have a feeling that since Pio probably grew up hating the commies that he could be enraged by Trump's actions.

But then again, he could have been all in as well.

Well, the problem is everybody who has every tasted power in the Republican party and who has used conservative small government rhetoric to get there has then turned around and used government to further their personal hobby horses. While I'll grant you that the concept of small government is valid in theory, in practice American conservatives have just used it as a vehicle. There are probably off off Broadway individuals who mean the terms when they say them, but they have about as much influence on US policy as, well, sincere liberals.

Look at CATO for example. When they were an obscure ivory tower institution they probably meant what they said, but ever since the Kochs made the political big time they are just a cynical purveyor of Club For Growth-style plutocratic bullsh-t. A sincere small government conservative would, for example, halt all government subsidies to private entities. He would eliminate the distinction between earned income and capital gains taxes. He would never, ever allow the government to bail out a failed private entity. And he would favor the prosecution of any private entity that bribed government through political contributions as a dangerous distortion of the market. Those would all be intellectually honest and internally consistent policies -- yet no "small government" conservative with any influence proposes them.

tl; dr: In theory, small government conservatism is a valid philosophy. In practice, it's a racket.
