i.e, tell Iowans you support ethanal, Nodaks you support a strong military defense system, etc. That's what politicians have always done and what we have come to disrespect in them.
What Republicans have learned and applied brilliantly is that you are more apt to succeed if you tell voters what to vote against. And make it scarry. It's pretty clear that doesn't work very well with solid dems, who are more motivated by inspiration, but it is not as simple as telling people how you will improve their lives.
Russ Feingold was a good candidate, IMO, with a liberal but independent history.
Give people something to vote for and they'll show up.
Telling them, "we'll keep things just as they are" isn't gonna do it. Cause while "as they are" may be working for a lot of people, there are still lots more who need help. Tell them how you'll make their lives better. Give it to them. They'll vote for you.
