Give people something to vote for and they'll show up.


Telling them, "we'll keep things just as they are" isn't gonna do it. Cause while "as they are" may be working for a lot of people, there are still lots more who need help. Tell them how you'll make their lives better. Give it to them. They'll vote for you.

i.e, tell Iowans you support ethanal, Nodaks you support a strong military defense system, etc. That's what politicians have always done and what we have come to disrespect in them.

What Republicans have learned and applied brilliantly is that you are more apt to succeed if you tell voters what to vote against. And make it scarry. It's pretty clear that doesn't work very well with solid dems, who are more motivated by inspiration, but it is not as simple as telling people how you will improve their lives.

Russ Feingold was a good candidate, IMO, with a liberal but independent history.

Yes, I’m not making this up. Perez’s spokesperson straight up said, Andrew Cuomo’s dad helped Perez start his political career and the two have had a “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” relationship for decades, so of course Perez will break his own self-declared rules and endorse Cuomo.

I support Perez as a person, not his (and Rover's) faction. Perez is a smart guy. Clearly I would prefer an even smarter, more liberal, guy. But right now I don't see that guy out there -- do you have a suggestion? It is obviously very hard for that guy to thrive in the current Democratic apparatus.

Also, I don't see Perez as cheating towards the moderates in the way that say DWS did. I do see Perez shutting down cheeseball celeb candidates, and I support that. I don't want our version of Roseanne standing for any public office higher than Hollywood dog catcher.

AFAIK, Perez shut down Nixon because she's an idiot who wouldn't last ten seconds in a nation campaign. That's literally the first time I ever read anything to the contrary.

Not sure how I got tied into the Tom Perez crowd? My preference by far was for Howard Dean to re-assume the job.

Having said that, we aren't going to know how good or bad the dude is until November rolls around. Dean himself was widely panned as a terrible choice for the job right up until the results from election night 2006 started rolling in. Suddenly he was a genius.

I'll also add that while I don't follow every race I haven't seen any egregious misses in terms of recruitment and backing thus far. Seems you've got a mix of people running for office all across the country which isn't a bad thing. Too much is being made of this Cuomo-Nixon match up. May the best person win. Who cares who endorses who, and whoever loses needs to get firmly behind the winner as position wise they aren't that much different.

I read the Comments, too. There's (1) a long back and forth about to what extent he can make a personal as distinct from an official endorsement. There's also (2) a lot of Kossite nonsense to the effect that if you have the bad taste to ever prefer a male candidate to a female that means you are ipso facto sexist, because a lot of Kossites plopped off the Grievance Studies conveyor belt in the last couple decades.

(1) although I can see the distinction I don't really buy it. "It's just my personal preference" is a lame thing for someone holding an important org chair to say -- especially someone who has the power of funding life or death. I agree with you that was a cop out. I think Perez may have been trying to finesse it and it blew up on him. He probably does have bills to pay to the Cuomo machine, but you cannot let that spill into that role.

(2) is always a problem on Kos, where the histrionics of black and female identity poutrage is worse than a safe space at Vassar. There are people on Kos who literally can't think without inserting their normative agenda into every conversation, and those people are completely pointless to have a conservation with. Also probably terrible in bed.

Upon further review, the decision on the field is reversed. Perez screwed up by calling the endorsement personal instead of official. He then compounded it BADLY by saying he did it out of loyalty to a faction of the party he is committed to referee impartially. I support calls for him to be replaced. Sorry, Dr. Mrs.

No it isn't, he's a bag man for the financial industry, charter schools, oligarchs, and basically everything else the Republicans want in terms of economic issues. The guy isn't all that distinguishable from Mitt Romney on those issues.
