POTUS 45.33: ""We're rounding them up in a very humane way, in a very nice way."

But that's the point, he really doesn't have that ability even though he's the freaking President.

Let's say Slap is right and Trump has asked the FBI to arrest journalists who are writing mean things about him. I haven't seen anybody arrested, and I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to happen.

If he could do you believe he would? Even if not his rhetoric emboldens stupidity and fuels unjustifiable fear of government - which is not the same thing as suggesting we should never question our leaders.

I need to drop for now but there's more here than just words and it would be foolish to look the other way.

I think the last president to lock up journalists was Woodrow Wilson. However, there are other, sneakier, ways to make the press miserable such as an IRS audit or delaying a passport.

However if tD does arrest the press, he would need to go and go quickly.

Let's say Slap is right and Trump has asked the FBI to arrest journalists who are writing mean things about him. I haven't seen anybody arrested, and I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to happen. Everyone knows its the rantings of an imbecile. Now, if the FBI did arrest journalists who questioned Trump, and if Trump apppointees started prosecuting them, and if judges that Trump installed started ignoring the law and incarcerating these journalists, yeah, then I'd be worried. But that scenario is just a fantasy scenario that people are throwing out there every time he makes an outlandish statement.

So it's ok that his administration has barred the media from meetings that are supposed to be open to the general public, just as long as he hasn't arrested them?

All refugees or some refugees?

Why is that a question? That’s not very Christian of you.

Re: POTUS 45.33: ""We're rounding them up in a very humane way, in a very nice way."

The point of the article was that Trump's attacks on the FBI, Mueller, the DOJ, etc..., were damaging or destroying the "rule of law" in this country. I called, and call, BS. He is literally following the playbook of every single person, president or non-president who has found himself under investigation or scrutiny by those same authorities.

Not true. Every other person who has found themselves under investigation says they're innocent or at worst, that there's political motivation. Not Trump, etc. He attempts to debase the functioning of the govt by painting 'activist' judges as endemic, and criticizing the broader functioning of the government or deep state (discrediting any outcomes based on skills but counter to Trump's ideology) and now the FBI (who have the ability to evaluate crimes).

Trump in particular and Republicans in general are attempting to permanently discredit the balance of power structures that exist in the US government - because they don't want to abide by them. Just because they won't succeed, doesn't mean that it will be damaging and faar more difficult for the govt. to put the country above the GOP. So I call your statement BS.

Re: POTUS 45.33: ""We're rounding them up in a very humane way, in a very nice way."

Trump's anthem outrage is yet another example of his hypocrisy and willingness to say anything to reassure the racists among his supporters. Philadelphia Inquirer football writer Paul Domowitch Tweeted:
"Donald Trump says you have to stand proudly for the National Anthem or 'maybe you shouldn't be in this country.'' I was there 34 years ago when he spent the entire anthem berating Philadelphia Stars president Carl Peterson about playing a USFL playoff game at Franklin Field."

Everything Trump says or does can be explained by:
-What’s in it for Trump?
-The ends always justify the means. (double meaning for “means”)
-When attacked always hit back harder. (usually with alternative facts)

So it's ok that his administration has barred the media from meetings that are supposed to be open to the general public, just as long as he hasn't arrested them?

The implication of your question is that the administration or Trump has violated some sort of open meeting or sunshine law. I'm pretty sure that hasn't happened because the media would be in court so fast it would make our heads spin, were that the case.

Regarding open meeting laws, personally I am strongly in favor of them and I think they should be aggressively enforced.

Notwithstanding the way you phrased your question, I assume you are asking about Trump's practice of trying to punish individual reporters or news institutions who Trump believes have been unfair to him. The punishment usually takes the form of "banning" them from a campaign rally, a news conference, etc... If that's not what you are talking about, then you'll have to be more specific.

With regard to Trump's attempts to "punish" these reporters/newspapers, I have three thoughts.

First, restricting access to those types of events is not illegal. If he wants to hold a press conference in his bathroom at 2 a.m. and invite only reporters from the New York Post and Der Spiegel, he's legally free to do so.

Second, his actions are incredibly naive and stupid, even by Trump standards. Pretty much anyone over the age of 8 would understand they won't work. Not only have his "bannings" failed to bring the press into line, they've almost certainly had the opposite effect.

Which leads me to my final point. His actions at trying to discipline reporters or newspapers has probably had a far more beneficial, rather than harmful, effect on this country than we realize. I'd rather have an angry pitbull of a press, beaten and disciplined by an unstable executive, than the collection of coddled, fat and lazy poodles we've been saddled with, happy to regurgitate everything the White House spoon feeds them.

I believe when historians look back on this time period a hundred years from now, part of what will be written is about the reawakening of the American Press. An unhinged presidency coupled with new and exciting forms of publishing and reporting provide pretty good ingredients for a new era of reporting.
