POTUS 45.3 - Bowling Green Massacre Memorial Thread

Re: POTUS 45.3 - Bowling Green Massacre Memorial Thread

It's a very cold-hearted thing to say, and I feel bad saying it, but that was my experience coming from a very poor district. I think some sort of alternate education would have helped the kids more than anything else.

Methinks you learned the wrong lessons from your childhood. Generations ago your attitude was the one telling people blacks were genetically inferior to whites therefore giving them the same rights was a waste of time.

So now Trump is sick! ... like Clinton was sick.

Focusing on stuff like that is not a winning formula. Rover's said it; Handy's said it; I'm saying it.

Trump doesn't have dementia. He's always been like this. He's just a narcissistic idiot.

The people who voted for him may be sick, but Trump is right as rain.

Your first sentence kind of says it does work...

Also, please see any FF post from the 8 Obama years and maybe you'll see the joke

Hmmm... maybe Piers Morgan does have a brain when it comes to globalist media bias... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MrbXk5xOOM

Amazing what happens when you aren't paid by the Charlatan News Network. And probably the last person you'd expect to give him an uninterrupted microphone, too...

Perhaps you're right, but what I saw was a lot of kids not graduate HS and a lot of the ones that did didn't go on to college. It didn't seem that whatever standards the federal government set helped out at all. It's obviousl anecdotal and maybe in other places the standards make a big difference in the quality of education.

I've said it about colleges, and I believe it holds true at the public school level --> It's not the school you put the kid into, it's what the kid puts into school.

Now, hidden in that statement is the implicit understanding that the basic tools are available at the school.

Nah stupid people are stupid. Department of Ed wont help that dontcha know.

They dont need good education they just need guns!

But hey, maybe we should let Texas teach kids that slavery wasnt a thing. (like they tried to) I am sure we wont have any issues with that.

Seriously the GOP is a flipping cancer on a modern society.

By HS it's way, way too late. I'll just take myself as an example of pure privilege, even though I was just generic public school all the way.

1. Not from a broken home.
2. Both parents college grads who understand the value of education.
3. 90% of the other houses on the block are exactly same situation, so their kids aren't f-cked up influences.
4. Leafy middle class neighborhood where the most traumatic thing that happens is the ice cream truck is late.
5. Good food, healthy diet, no missing meals or vitamins. Regular check up and dentist. All vaccinated.
6. Books in the house; strict rules about homework, TV off, bedtime.
7. Older siblings and kids around the neighborhoods in or on their way to college.
8. The unspoken assumption that that is where you'll go. Everyone with a sh-t job is just doing it for summer money.
9. Girls want you to be smart and get into a good school, and will probably break up with you if you're dumb or unambitious.

And we haven't even gotten to the school factors yet.

Being from a good school district is playing the game on Easy. Being from a poor one is playing the game on Impossible. It has zippo to do with the kid -- if you took 10k kids from Grosse Pointe and 10k from Inner City Detroit and switched their brains at birth, the results would be exactly the same.

Came from Outside 495 myself, and what I can say is education is the great equalizer. As in the its one of the few things you can do for poor or inner city kids to actually give them a leg up on where they were born in life. IF you get good grades despite anything else you have to deal with (bad or absent parents, having to work at the same time as being in school, caring for younger siblings, etc) you most likely will eventually be hired into a decent job and have the opportunity to succeed. To do so IMHO you need two things: 1) a low chance of being a victim of a violent crime, because you can't study if you're worried about being killed, and 2) a good school that will actually teach you something.

Mind you, kids who do benefit from #1 and #2 may still leave their areas and migrate towards more prosperous places. That's a whole different discussion. But from my personal experience, the clichés about getting educated are true. The funny thing about the working world is its generally a meritocracy. You can either do the job, or you can't, and unless you work for daddy's company if you can't do the job you're out no matter your pedigree or private school education.

If you get good grades in a bad inner city school you should get a free ride to any school in the country, no questions asked, and you should be given as many years as you need in a great high school to get yourself ready.

The poor kids I met at college were just as smart as the other kids, and they were ten times more mature. The kid who works his way out of East St. Louis or Newfoundland and winds up at a tier 1 school isn't gonna throw away his shot.

There should be reverse affirmative action at schools to screen out 90% of the rich kids. I'm sure they did get straight A's, and I'm sure they're smarter than the average American HS student. But probably not that much smarter. A few are -- it is possible after all to play very hard and smart with the game on Easy. But I saw plenty of kids in college who, while they weren't rockheads, were definitely Dubyas.

Re: POTUS 45.3 - Bowling Green Massacre Memorial Thread

Sadly my daughter and her school are completely f*ed. :(

Huge portion of the neighborhood is well below the poverty line and the school receives a lot of Title I funding. Some of it going to a program just to feed the kids breakfast. Couple that with Alaska's economy going south, Republicans practically falling over themselves to cut education to "stick to the teachers union", and people absolutely abhorrent to paying taxes and well, her school is f*ed.

I imagine the right wing families will voucher out to the private school run by the Baptist mega-church, some folks will move, and the rest of the kids' education will suffer simply because they live in the wrong area.

Re: POTUS 45.3 - Bowling Green Massacre Memorial Thread

One's a little more shocking than the other, given the identity politics of today...

Is that the identity politics where we all have to bend over backwards not to hurt white male blue collar feewies?
