POTUS 45.22 - The Genius of Donald Trump

In general, if you work for it, you will get it.

And getting a college degree doesn't count as working for it?

Yes yes, we all know self entitled asshats. But we also all know people who work just as hard and never get ahead for one reason or another.

Republicans and Fark Independents (tm) care more about the former than the latter. Which is just sad. Life's too short to carry that much spite around.

So, why are you carrying spite for my thinking? ;)

While I have a beef about people not working hard to get what they want, I won't go on and on about it, because I know they won't go anywhere. They will get what they deserve. Yes, there are some who work their butt off and can't get a break. I do feel sorry for those folks, I really do. They DO deserve better. And some of the charity money I give does go to those who help those work are working hard to move up in life, or (apologize for the following cliche) just don't have enough money to get their kid(s) a present at Christmas, etc.

Re: POTUS 45.22 - The Genius of Donald Trump

Brent,
Look at the real numbers. Support for the poor is pretty small, even less for the people who you call lazy. We put WAY more support to rich- one big one is that ****ed unearned tax rates that are WAY lower than earned rates. You can earn millions of $$, and pay only 15%, and you don't even have to work for THAT. Talk about lazy.

It's hilarious that we complain about the poor, the lazy, and the ones who feel that they have been overlooked over time. But rarely do we complain about the rich who don't have to work for a living. The ones that earn millions of dollars doing exactly nothing but guess well on stocks.

So why are the poor lazy worse than the rich lazy?

And while I commend you for your charity, it's farking pathetic that charity is still required in the richest country on earth. We as a society should do better, and we must do better. And that means government assistance for all, properly funded and received without stigma or shame.

Where did I say the poor lazy were worse than the rich lazy?

Now, if they earned their money through hard work, then took it easy, no problem with that. If you just inherited family money and coasted? Meh. I don't like that at all.

Re: POTUS 45.22 - The Genius of Donald Trump

Edit: Handy, you have worked multiple jobs at once to make things work; I expected you to understand where I'm coming from.

I still do...and I had to pay a ton of taxes last year because I jumped a bracket. I wasnt happy about it but I paid it without a second thought. I understand that to get the things I want out of society I am going to have to chip in. That is my responsibility as a citizen. Too many people whine and biotch about everything but never want to actually ante up to pay for it. We need better roads, safer streets, better pay for cops, better schools, more prisons, better hospitals, more fire departments, more ambulances, more plows, safer bridges...etc. but when it comes time for people to kick in and help it is all a bunch of whiny Libertarian bs about how taxes are stealing. I am sick and tired of it.

If you dont want to kick in fine dont. Then you lose all rights to anything publicly funded by taxes period end of story. You better be prepared to pay tolls on highways, you better be prepared to spend extra cash to make sure your kids go to private school, you better hope you have enough cash to pay for the doctor if insurance doesnt cover it or it is an emergency, you better never need unemployment or Medicare or Social Security, you better get snow chains and a lot of extended warranties because the roads will get bumpy. Oh and you better be prepared for rising prices on ****ed near everything of value because if you dont pay taxes all those subsidies that keep prices where they are at no longer exist.

We arent reading books and theories here this is the real world, and if you want to live in a society that has any sort of real value you need to pay up. You dont have to like it, but unless you want us to become Kansas (and trust me you dont) then deal with it and just be happy you live in one of the states that treats its people well, has a high standard of living and a relatively low cost of living as well. Want to know why that is...because we pay our taxes and fund what needs to be funded. That is why when the business community has their big convention in Minneapolis every year Dayton speaks. (I work it so I know) By rule they should hate him he openly taxes them at a rate they dont like but they dont hate him because they know he uses the money to fund schools and to train workers...which is good for their bottom line. Unlike Wisconsin we actually treat our people as people not scum.

Re: POTUS 45.22 - The Genius of Donald Trump

You said those words, not me.

That is a small portion of it. Nowadays we're talking about "free" college, jacked up minimum wages for what amounts to unskilled (and honest work, I will say that) jobs, etc. Money has to come from somewhere. Nothing is free.

This is all a bunch of malarkey. You are smarter than this. You sound like the morons on FB who cry cause McDonalds workers want higher pay. They are doing honest work shouldnt they be paid a living wage? Not everyone can get a better job if they are doing their best and putting in the time havent they earned more than that?

See that is the ultimate fallacy behind all of that BS. It assumes that anyone who works minimum wage jobs is either A) lazy or B)unmotivated. It ignores that most of the people working jobs like that are doing so because they HAVE to. And it isnt like they can do that and go to college, even community colleges cost enough to make that near impossible. (trust me I know my second job is working at a community college) It is propaganda and lies...it plays off the idea that at one time you could accomplish both. The second college became a business that went out the window.

And ultimately this could have been solved if the business community hadnt fought raising the minimum wage every time it came up. If they had just accepted that as the dollar lost value the wage would need to rise they wouldnt be feeling it so bad. $2-3 an hour spread over 4-5 years is barely noticeable. But no they fought and fought and now they have to pay the piper. I dont weep for the illogical and stupid.

Re: POTUS 45.22 - The Genius of Donald Trump

I don't mind being taxed. I do mind being taxed unfairly (and yes, that will include the estate tax...that money has been taxed once already). I don't like the fact that if there is a surplus, that we just roll that on over for future years. If there is a surplus, we have been over-taxed. Adjust from year to year. Some years, we get our money back. Some years, we have to pay more. Fine.

Again, my original point is that I don't want to pay more tax because some are not pulling their weight. I earned my money, and I should be able to distribute my profits as I see fit. I don't want the government to demand I pay more just because I make more. I am for a flat tax.

I think many of us are on a similar page, it's the nuances that are the contention.

We had capitalism and 90% top marginal rates and tons of regulation all through the '40s and '50s and '60s and '70s and this country was great for more and more people every year.

We've had The Milton Friedman Paradise of capitalism and tax holidays for the rich and deregulation in the '80s and '90s and '00s and '10s and this country is great for fewer and fewer people every year.

I know which country I want to live in.

I don't care about theory anymore. I care about what works.

Jim Crow?

Mookie’s shocked at this?!?!?!

Holy **** the republicans have you so wrapped around their finger.

We haven’t had a surplus in close to 30 years. We’ve been giving the richest 1% over $10 trillion in the last 20 years. Fair my ****ing ***.

You didn’t earn ****. Society allowed you to earn that. With roads, public schools, law enforcement, infrastructure, all of that. You and rest of us all owe society a great debt and we’ve been shirking our duties since goddam Reagan fooled the morons into thinking they were highly taxed.

Re: POTUS 45.22 - The Genius of Donald Trump

Brent espouses the just world theorem constantly despite not realizing its a fallacy.

Re: POTUS 45.22 - The Genius of Donald Trump

Go ahead and rip me. I don't care anymore.

On one hand, corps can pay low b/c illegal (oops, I mean undocumented) immigrants will take those low paying jobs. On the other, folks want a living wage, which would dictate that legal citizens would then take those jobs.

Why is it an offense to ask people to work an honest job? I don't care if it's blue collar, white collar, etc? Just work. Contribute? That's all I ask.

And finally, I dislike the Republican party as it is right now, and that is being polite. Trouble is, if you lean right of a Franken or (RIP, truly and honestly) of a Wellstone, you are the GOP Fundie devil nowadays. It's bullsh*.

Re: POTUS 45.22 - The Genius of Donald Trump

So everyone is as well off as Brent? What’s wrong then that Mookie reads all this *****in’

If everyone is only as well off as I am, then we all are fooked. With apologies to DX and you, I bet you make 2x (min) as much as me.

Better be more than that since Mookie supports 6!! :(

Of course we’ll of is a personal state. Mookie’s post was more geared to your happiness and ability to exist as you wish. If that makes sense. Many here seem to want to institute “fairness” into the picture and begrudge what others have worked to get.

When there are surpluses Mookie would look to retire debt. Fairness folks would look to spend it quickly.

Mookie would also love to see defense spending cut drastically and that go to rebuilding the infrastructure that got Brent his status :)
Brent would be even wealthier!! (In the eyes of dx :p)

Re: POTUS 45.22 - The Genius of Donald Trump

I make enough to have a roof, clothes, and food. Plus a little extra to have some fun. Ain't much, but it's enough. And I am happy.

Where did I say the poor lazy were worse than the rich lazy?

Now, if they earned their money through hard work, then took it easy, no problem with that. If you just inherited family money and coasted? Meh. I don't like that at all.

And yet, you want to eliminate the estate tax.

If everyone is only as well off as I am, then we all are fooked. With apologies to DX and you, I bet you make 2x (min) as much as me.

You make $52,000? Then congratulations, half of the households in the U.S. are worse off than you. Half.

And there's a reason for estate taxes. They simplify the process of trying to calculate the gains of every single investment or holdings that a person has accumulated in their lifetime. With no estate tax, the very wealthy would never pay capital gains on anything, they just hold onto it within the family in perpetuity, even further increasing the inequality gap.
