POTUS 45.2 - Same arguments, different sides

Funny how you also don't mention the guardian, the independent, or the Times.

The Times is good, Guardian isn't what it used to be, and Independent is decent enough(I don't read it as much as the others.) I probably painted the media over there with too broad of brush.

Today was the National Prayer Breakfast, which Trump spent time on discussing the crappy Apprentice ratings. (Link to video in quote)

It's only a problem if your paint is the wrong color.

Dangerous. Glad white women liked him so much.

So calling out the need for free speech and a violence free campus is a bad thing now because Pres. Trump is the one to say it? Holding colleges and universities fiscally responsible for not holding to these values is about the only way you're ever going to see more than just lip-service to them on campus.

I don't like the man being our president as the vast majority of the things he's said the past two weeks have been cringe-worthy and potentially dangerous, but knee-jerking against absolutely everything the man says or tweets isn't going to do anybody any good. Free speech is a good thing. Ending on-campus violence is a good thing.

Separation of Church and State is a good thing too. You start putting campaigns into Churches and you're going to destroy the country. Threatening colleges and universities from funding is also dangerous. Free speech goes both ways.

A church can say it is against the tenets of our faith to support a candidate who supports X. They should not say "Vote for A".

A church should be able to criticize a person or party for their actions (or lack thereof).

A university should not condone rioting by its students. If it does, then there should be consequences.

I agree with this, but I think the problem is when bringing in controversial speakers they don't bring in the proper security. Things like this that are foreseeable lead me to think someone is doing it on purpose this way and I wonder why.

I disagree on your Church comments. Once the Church becomes involved in politics we will polarize everyone there. Once that is done we will no longer have communities at all.

Re: POTUS 45.2 - Same arguments, different sides

Let's play a game. It's called guess which quote during a National Prayer Breakfast got conservatives all upset:

a)
And that gap between want and plenty, it gives us vertigo. It can make us afraid, not only of the possibility that progress will stall, but that maybe we have more to lose. And fear does funny things. Fear can lead us to lash out against those who are different, or lead us to try to get some sinister “other” under control. Alternatively, fear can lead us to succumb to despair, or paralysis, or cynicism. Fear can feed our most selfish impulses, and erode the bonds of community.

It is a primal emotion -- fear -- one that we all experience. And it can be contagious, spreading through societies, and through nations. And if we let it consume us, the consequences of that fear can be worse than any outward threat.

b)
That's when I really said -- but we had tremendous success on The Apprentice. And when I ran for president, I had to leave the show. That's when I knew for sure that I was doing it. And they hired a big, big movie star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to take my place. And we know how that turned out.

The ratings went down the tubes. It's been a total disaster and Mark will never, ever bet against Trump again. And I want to just pray for Arnold if we can, for those ratings, OK?

A university should not condone rioting by its students. If it does, then there should be consequences.

Which, from what I have seen, none of the schools in the UC system have done. They called in the cops to break things up when it was warranted.

It's the students who should suffer consequences if they destroy property or cause bodily harm to anyone.

Fine- then the churches can start paying taxes.

What part of separation of church and state don't people get?

Oh, c'mon.

I realize that like a few others on here, your ol' knee just starts twitching in the morning when you first think of Trump's name. But how about a little context.

The comments you linked to were at the start of his speech. He was introduced by the fellow who produces the Apprentice, so he was making a joke at this producer's expense, "hey, he had to replace me with Arnold and now the ratings have tanked. Since we're all at a prayer meeting, maybe we should say a little prayer for his ratings. haha"

Ok, it's a stupid joke. But how many people who are public speakers, including people who are not particularly good public speakers (and Trump certainly falls into that category) try to loosen up their crowd (and even more, themselves) with some sort of joke to start off their speech?

But, by all means, keep shrieking your faux outrage over every tweet, every utterance, every public appearance. The next time there is something to really be outraged over (probably later this afternoon), no one will be paying attention to you anymore anyway.

I'd say we've had 3 things already this morning to be legitimately outraged over.

FYI, due to trademark issues, in Australia, the Toyota Highlander is known as the Kluger.

I guess there CAN be only one. ;)

They should have called it the Kurgan ;) (hooray Highlander references!)
