POTUS 45.2 - Same arguments, different sides

Re: POTUS 45.2 - Same arguments, different sides

How is this a thing? I assume this is just a committee rule, right? Mnuchin isn't the worst of the worst. They should be focusing on Price, DeVos (whose family may actually be evil), and Sessions. Save the big guns for the big targets. Mnuchin is bad, but he doesn't represent a mortal risk to the agency he's going to represent.

Yes it's a committee rule that one member of the minority party must be present. It's the same committee that votes on both Price and Mnunchin, so that probably has something to do with why those two and not others, they were able to organize with 100% participation from the committee Ds. Also, I think they are actually performaing their jobs as they should, on DeVos they heard testimony and moved forward with the vote and voted against her, but Price and Mnunchin both flat out lied to the committee during questioning and have been caught. They want the opportunity to ask additional questions about the specific things they were lied to about. Mnunchin lied to their faces about robo-signing, and Price about his sweetheart stock purchase deal being available to everyone.

Re: POTUS 45.2 - Same arguments, different sides

Can the democrats actually stop anyone without republican help?

No. As long as all Republicans vote as a bloc in committee and on the floor, we can do nothing but put our objections on the public record.

The fight right now is to raise awareness so constituents deluge their reps and scare them. That's what the Tea Party was able to do. It's a long game but as we've seen it can work if the public is "radicalized."

In our government, The People are powerless. The People Who Legislators Listen To are sovereign. While the rich will always have the advantage, just look at what the Tea Party accomplished in the early days before it was brought to heel by the Kochs etc.

Today's already lost, but we are fighting for tomorrow.

Keep trying, Drew. Keep trying.

You guys certainly don't need my help!

It will be interesting to see what the mid-terms hold. Typically republicans do better those years than presidential years. I am thinking the opposite could be true this time around. The democrats do have to defend a lot of seats in the senate though.

I think if you dig back, Kepler and I (and it wasn't limited to us, I just remember the conversations he and I had) were pretty clear about needing to develop young blood in the Democratic party.

I think literally everybody except maybe Rover understands this.

The top of the party needs a complete fumigation.

Re: POTUS 45.2 - Same arguments, different sides

I don't know. It sounds like they are blocking the votes like the GOP did in 2013 for Obama's EPA nominee. I'm guessing they can block using this method, but I'm kind of torn on whether the ends justify the means. If they can get better nominees, then yes, they are justified.

DeVos is a critical threat to the DOE. Price is a critical threat to HHS. Fracky McOilface is a critical threat to the EPA. These are the ones that need to be targeted.

The Dems needed I believe 3 GOPers to flip to stop her. If you look at who was on the committee there was one possible flip and the rest were pipedreams.

As much as you guys try, the Moderate Democrats and the Liberal Democrats will not turn against each other in any meaningful way. The menace of plutocracy from the Hill and fascism from the White House gives us one helluva common enemy.

The Senate's a tough math problem but if the Trump Sh-tShow keeps on like this the GOP will be lucky to avoid 2006 II (losing 6 in the Senate and 31 in the House).

Yes and they need to shift away from being towards the center and move left. They also need to do it in a way that isnt as "Ivory Tower" as some Dems tend to act.

If the Dems want to win in Middle America they have to admit that people have the right to screw themselves over. You cant save everyone, so save those that ask and dont get all uppity about it either.

I'd like to see a decent third party develop that is pro-rights(gun, gay, abortion, and everything in between) and also have a reasonable economic agenda. Neither party is offering that right now.

I agree absolutely. "Come with me if you want to live" means "If you don't come with me it's your misfortune and none of my own." Liberals have to grow a spine and realize many of the poor hate us. They are the scorpion, we are the frog. F-ck em.

Re: POTUS 45.2 - Same arguments, different sides

If only we had some party that was coming off of, say, 8 years of economic expansion all while protecting abortion access, making huge strides in gay rights, and not touching anyone's guns. I'm thinking of calling that party "Billy and the Clone-asauras".

The Libertarians started out that way but they quickly just became a plaything of Cato and the Randians. No help coming from that side -- if you want a small 'l' libertarian party you'll need to start over.

I'd have been with you at 25. Now I have people I love and care for, so sorry, I've grown out of it.

Well it doesnt help when liberals go all nutty cause an actor wore an Indian costume for Halloween or Steve Martin talks about how Carrie Fisher was gorgeous and smart! Liberals tend to go too far...especially white privileged liberals who never had anything to fight for.

People will let you know what they want. Even the most out of touch person will sooner or later need something. Even Chris Christie snuggled up to Obama during the hurricane.

But of course a sizeable portion of this country thinks it's "going too far" or "nutty" when they can't prevent gay people from getting married or when a cop can't just shoot a black person because they're inherently scary.

Part of going nutty about absurd things is keeping the front line away from important things. If we stop fighting for university safe spaces we'll be fighting lynchings and mosque burnings. Better to fight the morons on their turf than ours.

President Hillary called to say thanks for working together.

Not to mention the never ending boycotts of North Carolina over the stupid bathroom law. The law was a complete waste of time, but the reaction was ridiculous.
