POTUS 45.19: Being Douced by Irma makes me sad!!

Re: POTUS 45.19: Being Douced by Irma makes me sad!!

Maybe that's a sign it was a really dumb way to protest.

No, it's just the classic right wing bait and switch. It works every time. Saw it in it's full glory on CNN last night during the debate. Amy and Bernie clearly won the debate but they didn't win the rhetoric war.

Re: POTUS 45.19: Being Douced by Irma makes me sad!!

The origin of playing the national anthem at a sporting event was a World Series game between the Cubs and Red Sox. The Cubs had a band at their game, because, well why else would you ever go to a Cubs game.

In the middle of the game the band struck up the national anthem, presumably to distract people from the mess on the field. A couple of Boston players felt it necessary to salute and sing along, thus applying peer pressure on the other players and fans to do the same. A "tradition" was thus born.

All this recent debate reminds us of is how truly horrible the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and their associated fan bases are and how we'd be better off if none of them had ever existed.

I also heard a story yesterday how it was Harry Caray that started the horrible "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" singalong in Chicago. Chicago is evil. Also, the stupid "stand or kneel" debate has taken up way more energy than the 10 seconds it deserves.
Meanwhile, Trump's lack of interest in actual crisis management, which peaked one day after Harvey landed, means that thousands of Puerto Ricans (American citizens) are in actual life danger without food, water, shelter, or communications. Short of some more governors mobilizing their national guards to help, I recommend giving up hope on the feds being very useful and donating to private charities that are already mobilized. The whole island is basically shot.

Re: POTUS 45.19: Being Douced by Irma makes me sad!!

And the reason for the protest has been lost.

Not at all. The reaction to the protest is a perfect example of what the protest is about. A certain type of person thinks his (it can be women, but generally it's men) opinion is the American Baseline and everybody who disagrees is just being allowed, by his gracious sufferance, to disagree. That type of person also sees nothing wrong with jerking blacks around at traffic stops. After all, blacks are inherently scary because they're not the American baseline (white). Rinse and repeat with Christian and straight.

That type of person thinks he is the only "real" American. He is allowing us to be deviant, and we should be grateful to him.

That type of person is a reactionary and an authoritarian.

Welp, it's time for him to grow up. That f-kcstick does not own the country and does not own the flag any more than you or I. The only reason anyone with a brain has ever sucked up to him is to sell him something. White's just another color, straight's just another orientation, Christian's just another superstition.

He is nothing special and we don't owe him sh-t.

Oh, really? I'd say the coverage of the national anthem standing issue has received more coverage then the original reason for the protest by far. It's not even close. The right (again) has turned the issue in to something else that benefits them. Like they always do. They did the same thing with Health Care last night during the debate. Which is exactly what I said would happen.

And maybe that's a sign that you're a racist piece of shlt.

Yes, that must be it.

I feel for black people. Them(and really all poor people) are treated horribly in this country. With that being said, I don't think they're going about protesting the right way. Why not protest in front of police stations or even burn a few of them down? I think most people could get behind that. The flag, national anthem, and military are too much for a lot of people.

Are you referring to yourself and the regular posters in this thread?

Haw, haw.

The difference between us is we understand our opinion is just one of many. We're probably right of course, because we're smarter and less ignorant than they are, as they prove everyday. But we also know we are no more entitled to special treatment or the legal supremacy of our opinions than they are. We know we don't own the flag and we don't wrap up ourselves in it and cry like a baby and hide behind Our Brave Lads whenever somebody disagrees with us.

But haw, that's a knee-slapper, haw, haw, a-yup.

Burn down a few police stations? People will get behind that? I don't know what you're smoking but you better lay off......look, the only "right way" for African Americans to protest in this country according to many is in a locked room in the dark where nobody can see or hear them. Bottom line.

Good Lord, you are dense. This. Is. Not. About. That.

And advocating arson as a way of protesting? Seriously? LOL.

The news media is no indicator of national mood, it's just a marketing tool for cars and beer.

He's a troll and he's in a corner. He has nowhere to go but the hamfisted sarcasm that is the dullard's satire.

I'm quite aware. They have been dragged into this now though.

It would send a strong message. Maybe it wouldn't work, but I think it's worth a shot. Real change won't be easy or peaceful. You need to make sure it involves the right message/people. Right now they are off target.

The news media is no indicator of national mood, it's just a marketing tool for cars and beer.

But another explanation is simpler: Many Americans don’t realize that what happened in Puerto Rico is a domestic disaster, not a foreign one.A new poll of 2,200 adults by Morning Consult found that only 54 percent of Americans know that people born in Puerto Rico, a commonwealth of the United States, are U.S. citizens. (Because Puerto Rico is not a state, they do not vote in presidential elections, but they send one nonvoting representative to Congress.)

This finding varied significantly by age and education. Only 37 percent of people ages 18 to 29 know people born in Puerto Rico are citizens, compared with 64 percent of those 65 or older. Similarly, 47 percent of Americans without a college degree know Puerto Ricans are Americans, compared with 72 percent of those with a bachelor’s degree and 66 percent of those with a postgraduate education.

Uh, huh.

Hit home I see.

Good.

This thread is typically a lefty circle jerk and it's amazing that you can post a sentence like that and miss the irony.

Of course I believe our side is right most of the time. They're my beliefs.

I'm open to other opinions though and I don't always look down on those other opinions with open contempt or lump all of the people who hold them into one bucket.

Judging by my Facebook feed, you're way off the mark on who finds this disrespectful. Sure, there's the obvious wingnuts, but also progressives and actually more women than men. Limited sample size, sure, but certainly more diverse than the sample size herein.

I did notice yesterday though that some friends of mine who served said it bothered them on Facebook. The NFL players should have respect for them.

The flag represents the whole country, not just the military. Same with the anthem, even if it is a horrible song that should be replaced by America the Beautiful.

Kneeling during the anthem isn't disrespecting veterans. It may be a shot against the country for which it stands, but considering that same country has farked over their relatives and ancestors for generations, they probably have a point.

And yet, nothing the Cubs have done compares to that greatest of horrors inflicted on the world by the White Sox. I speak, of course, of Hawk Harrelson.

Carry on.
