The way to go with your 401K is to put all your money in target date funds. They handle all the balancing and the fees are usually pretty reasonable.

As far as buying and selling on your own there are plenty of websites where you can do it. Make sure you take your time doing your research before you sign up for one though. I would be very careful how I access the account to.

I do this as well. I have quite a bit in my target funds (maybe 75% of my 401(k)s and IRAs) and the rest is in an S&P 500 index fund, a more aggressive small cap fund, and a growth fund. I also have a couple of brokerage accounts where I have some individual stocks.

But I agree with Drew. Target funds are perfect for someone who doesn't want to actively manage their 401(k) and IRA. Take an annual look (or quarterly, at most) at them to make sure they match where you want to be in terms of risk and aggressiveness. But for the most part, they are fantastic options.

So FLOTUS showed up to see all the hurricane devastation wearing stilettos.

I do a mix of target fund, growth funds, international funds, and a small percentage of fixed income bonds & money markets just as good practice. My portfolio is considered aggressive, and that's exactly where I want it for now.

Hard to criticize the President's outfit, pretty similar to what Christie and Obama wore after Irene.

Looks like Michelle was in flats after the Tuscaloosa tornadoes.

I'll be honest though, don't really care on either account. Bad optics, maybe, but hardly worth noting. Definitely worth a small cringe though.

I don't see many premier outlets covering the attire in my new feed. Mostly tabloids if you search for it. If there are any respected outlets covering the attire, I would really hope it would be to criticize the other outlets for even putting it in print. There are far more important things to do than worry about their attire. His weird tweets, poor reaction to the relief effort, and complete lack of any mentions of links to the Red Cross and other organizations is worth covering.

Note: He still hasn't sent out a link or instructions on how to donate to the relief effort. He has, however, tweeted:
  • A book recommendation for a Nazi
  • Some blathering by convicted felon Dinesh D'Souza
  • Something about NAFTA
  • Mexico paying for the wall
  • His envy over the size of Harvey
  • He won the state of Missouri by A LOT!
  • A message to Fox & Friends that boils down to "HI! I'm watching you this morning!"
  • Fox News reporter's criticism about Obama pardons

Yay!

My god, do you ever get anything right?

Please, no one pay attention to this "advice", target date funds are just the latest vehicle designed to slowly bleed you dry via fees for doing what would have happened naturally.

Put your money into a good indexed fund - Vanguard is good but it really doesn't matter - and just let it roll. VERY few people to no one beats the market long term*. An index fund and a target date fund are going to end up at the same place in 2055, you're just going to pay a lot more for the ride in a target date fund.

*Massive brained geniuses beat the market for short stretches, and know what to do with their gains, but those guys are running hedge funds, they're definitely not the nimrod, 2 hour lunch crowd "managing", aka doing as little as possible lest they f things up, target date funds.

IF you want to play around in the market, put some money in a Roth - back door it in if you make too much - and invest with that. TDAmeritrade and Fidelity charge under $10 a trade., I'm sure others do, too. My tip, it's still a good play to invest in the marijuana industry, aka the green rush, Jeffy Sessions won't be around forever to ruin things, play around with small money on some penny stocks to figure out how things work - the volatility is instructive and shortens the learning curve, then move onto to bigger things if you think it's worthwhile. If you're really into it and good, do some options trading, but that's a whole other ball of wax.

Read what the person I responded to posted. Target date funds are perfect for someone who doesn't want to manage their 401k. Non target date funds can have extravagant and unnecessary fees as well.

If all y'all just held euros you made 10% over the last quarter'ish :)

What is the "investing" of which you guys are speaking of? Is that where you still have money leftover on the day after payday?

Mark your calendar. I agree with Chris Christie today.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Chris Christie ripped his fellow Republicans in Texas as 'hypocrites' for asking for Hurricane Harvey aid after denying it to Sandy victims <a href="https://t.co/nbPJL6mRqi">pic.twitter.com/nbPJL6mRqi</a></p>— NowThis (@nowthisnews) <a href="https://twitter.com/nowthisnews/status/902538858738229248">August 29, 2017</a></blockquote>

Don't mess with Texas :)

No, they're not. Period, End of story. They're designed to rip off the simple minded - as are most investment vehicles but this one is absolutely blatant anyone who can read can see it. They're not perfect for anyone.

Non target date funds can have extravagant and unnecessary fees as well.
That's true, but it's also true that you can get half priced cannolis at the bakery around the corner on Tuesday's after 4:30, but I'm not sure what either of those things has to do with index funds. Do you know what the index in index funds means? Are you familiar with the concepts of active and passive management?

Please stop talking about investing, someone might actually listen to you

Do notice in the papers here pictures of flag draped coffins coming off air force planes, as well as photos of grieving family members are grave sites

Don't see these when reading in the US

The media doesn't show Our Brave Lads when they die for shareprice. They've found that can put a damper on quarterly sales.

Remember in WWII the Government did not show the dead bodies on the Tarawa beaches for almost a year for fear of hurting morale.

Grief should be a private affair, not plastered on the front page (unless it's the local paper).

Good; yes; you've done well. Here is a small prize.
