Re: POTUS 45.18 - Who Run Derpertown? McMasterBlaster Run Derpertown.

Why would I have heard of the mayors of any city? It's a miracle I've heard of de Blasio. I literally can't name the mayor of DC and it's 15 miles from my house.
Because I'd say mayors, and cities, are one of the strengths of the Democratic party right now, and probably will only become more so. I've had this thought in the back of my mind for a while now that we're gravitating toward being more a collection of city states, like the old Florence, Venice, Rome model than we are a country or even a collection of states. It's not there yet but it's moving toward people in NYC, SF, LA, Chicago, Boston having more in common with people in London, Paris, even Tokyo than they do with people in Elko, NV or Joplin, MO.

I actually hope that doesn't happen and it's going to be extremely ugly if it does but that's what happens when large swaths of the population refuse to think, adapt, change. It can't be 1955 forever. (So much irony in the derps hating Islamic extremists for wanting to go back to the 7th century when they operate under the same delusions, just picking a different point in the past they want to go back to.) It doesn't help that you have an industry of charlatans - Fox, Coulter, Murdoch, etc. - who cynically profit off re-enforcing those delusions. And it REALLY doesn't help when you have a collection of let them eat cake oligarchs who can't see that draining every last drop out of the economy isn't a smart play long term. But at some point, people need to own some of the consequences of their decisions and beliefs.

So yeah, mayors, bulwark against tRumpism, hugely outsize affect on the country - Boston has an influence radius of at least 50 miles reaching into at least 3 states - I can't say I know many of them myself but they're one of the main things standing between us and the hinterland nihilists who want to go Christian Sharia, anarchy, full Somalia on us.

So there's been a lot of news of identity politics being bad for Democrats. I can see both sides that it is and it isn't.
Ironically all the right has is identity politics. They don't have any actual sensible policies as we saw with their healthcare bill.

They don't understand that because they think white isn't a color, it's just God's default setting.

That's what is odd about bashing D's about "identity"- since they attack that, quite specifically, and have done zero, or negative work toward the economy.

And then they rally the troops around the identity around "tearing down history" or "going for a gun grab" or "whites are so oppressed"- those are firmly in the isle of identity.

When D's have to stand up for identity, it's 99% because it's being attacked.

Archie Bunker once corrected George Jefferson, "Us people aren't "you people." You people are "you people."

Republicans are hypocrites on this but at least this time their hypocrisy is ignorance and not malice. They literally cannot wrap their heads around the fact that whites are just another racial group. They think whites are the baseline which has, out of the goodness of their hearts, accommodated other races. That's what's behind their axiom that America is a "white, Christian" nation. They think they own the place and everyone else is just renting. They literally missed the very first lesson of America civics which is if you come here and join this country then you are an American. 100%. America has no color and no religion and no language except the pluralism of the people who are here at any given minute. Whites and Christians aren't in the least special.

The United States is like this big, beautiful house that's been lovingly worked on and passed down through the generations and now suddenly the young husband and wife have to share it with a crazy old uncle living in the attic who wants to tear out the electricity, board the windows to keep out strangers, stopping paying all the bills, paint it orange. And his name is on the deed with theirs and they can't stop him.

You can't fix or argue with crazy. Democrats are too nice to think that. They keep trying to talk with the uncle in the attic, bring him his mail, invite him to birthdays - like any of that is going to fix crazy.

For Christmas buy your Republican friends a copy of "The Scorpion and the Frog."

It’s unusual for a president to so publicly feud with Congressional leaders of his own party, but it appears that Trump’s attacks may be part of a strategy, even if it’s not a good one.

An unnamed outside adviser to Trump told the Washington Post Thursday that Trump is very purposefully setting GOP leaders on Capitol Hill up to take the blame as the President’s agenda continues to stall in the fall. This would help Trump in the future, such as in his 2020 re-election bid, the adviser told the Washington Post.

Here's hoping the torrent takes them all.

so do you just hope the uncle kicks the bucket before he does too much damage?

Good question. And to continue the analogy, there's another uncle, Uncle Ollie, who despite all the previous generations, going back for over 2 centuries, never selling the house, never cashing out the equity but instead re-investing by putting on a new room, building a garage, fixing up the yard now can't sell it if off fast enough so that they can buy a condo and yacht in Monaco. Oh, there's not enough room for all of us? TFB.

The educated, hard working, pass it on the kids middle class in this country is so pfhucked.

And Uncle Ollie buys the uncle in the attic a 30 pack of Bud Lite and some scratch tickets every week and the uncle in the attic loves him for it, that's all he needs, and signs off on anything Uncle Ollie wants to do. And when there's no heat in the attic in the winter because Uncle Ollie sold the furnace they both just blame the husband and wife for worrying about clean air and not owning a gun.

And, scene. Perfect. :)

Oh it is working. The Trumpers blame everyone and their mother except him. Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell are more hated by Trumpers than they are Democrats. Right now no one on up in the midterms with an R in their name is safe they could easily be "Eric Cantored".

I honestly think, and I have thought this for months, that Trump wants the Rs to lose the House so that way he can blame the Dems and have it actually resonate. Much like Obama never quite lived down the 2 years he had complete control and never passed much I think Trump's advisers are telling him if he isnt going to get anything done it is better to have the other side to demonize. Demonizing his own party will only divide up his base...

Here's what's dangerous about this- dump is making a self fulfilling prophecy. Government is bad and ineffective, and "draining the swamp" is about getting rid of ALL of DC- not the lobbyists, not the corruption, all of DC.

He fired the first salvo of that when he doubted the election results if he lost.

And anyone with a brain can see that he's going to force the ACA to fail- so government is bad, so we just stop this. And regulations are bad. And non-Americans are bad. Etc.

Now he can make a mockery of the various branches of government, they do nothing, they don't work with anyone, etc. When he goes out and complains about the swamp- it's directed directly at Congress. Not anyone else.

This is a long term strategy to make us all think that the US system of publicly elected officials representing us is a failure. Just like vlad in Russia.

There's a conspiracy theory for you.

So the question then becomes- how long of that will R's take until they invoke Article 25? This is destroying all sides of government and control, not just the Ds.

Maybe not. Trump's base is basically the half of the Republican electorate that hates the Republican leadership for not outlawing abortion, vegetarianism, and blacks.

Why wouldn't Trump want want a Democratic majority in Congress, but not a supermajority? Safe from impeachment he could play president but do absolutely no work since he couldn't accomplish anything anyway. The perfect gig for a lazy 70-year old trust fund brat.

Trump still needs the full Republican base to come home if he wants to be re-elected. (which he does, hence his campaigning already) If he loses even 2-3% he will be in lots of trouble. He needs to maintain his numbers and pray the Dems stay home again that is his only strategy. He wont add any votes so he needs to hold every last vote in every last county. If he cheeses off the rank and file all while screwing the rurals he will have troubles...

The Dems need to stick to what they are doing. Trump is creating all the headlines against himself so let him. Dont upset the apple cart. When he does something really bad (i.e. Charlottesville) that is when you come out guns blazing. This guy is like every criminal, part of them wants to be caught.
