POTUS 45.15 - Now With More Yacht Banging Stories!

Re: POTUS 45.15 - Now With More Yacht Banging Stories!

I think a lot of people are still living in the 80s when if you whispered "socialist" it was stick a fork in him, he's done.

Reasons I think that has changed:

1. Going to the well too often. Because that was true, Republicans went to that card every time: they have screamed that every Democrat is a socialist since Mondale. Its effect has worn down.

2. Confusion of intensity and size. This is your point, above. Yes, 40% of the nation is pinwheel-eyed insane about socialism, but that 40% are lockstep Republican voters. They are meaningless; we will never reach them. Our job is to reach the other 60%.

3. Pragmatism. You don't run on a socialist platform in America by calling it socialism, you run by talking about social security and Medicare and how those programs have made life so much better for so many people. There are ideologues on each tail but most Americans are pragmatists: they'll experiment with solutions that can plausibly work. That in fact is how the supply side camel got its nose in the tent: it seemed plausible. After a 30-year trial of course it's exposed as bogus. Our problem is we never yell "repeal and replace" about the warping of the tax code since 1980.

4. Anger. People are f-cking angry. They resent the rich because they should. They know they're being f-cked without lube by the ruling class. They are starting to catch on that the ruling class controls not just the GOP but a big chunk of the Democratic party as well. The evil face of this anger is social populism and the racism and xenophobia of the Trumpies. The good face is economic populism and the will to restore a deeply progressive tax structure and restart inter-generational mobility based on merit. America is, at heart, a meritocracy, and the Trump family is now the public face of the ineptitude and injustice of trickle down.

And if any of that was true...Bernie would have won. If people felt about socialism the way you think they do then we wouldnt be in the position we are now. The thing is they dont because to anyone over the age of 40 it is still a buzzword that triggers. It is like the term "Leftist" it doesnt matter whether it is negative or not in context it still triggers negative feelings.

Kep we get it cause we are educated. We understand. Even if you ignore the 60 million GOP voters there are plenty of Dems that hate socialism and by that I mean, will rail against it because they see the word polls badly. I know lefties that have issues with socialized medicine for no good reason.

We are better on the subject but if Bernie runs as a Socialist he loses. Republican strategists were begging for him to win on shows I watched because the ads write themselves.

Re: POTUS 45.15 - Now With More Yacht Banging Stories!

Here's what I've been told in this thread so far, in relation to my not voting this year:

1. I helped Trump win by not voting. In a state that hasn't voted for a R candidate since '72.
2. I am a terrible person for not voting (I bet many of my critics don't vote at a local level, btw)*
3. I should vote for (I) because that helps build new parties.
4. I shouldn't vote for (I) because there are only really 2 choices, so don't waste my vote.

*I mean every election since my critics came to the conclusion that voting is basically a requirement of a citizen. And not just voting, but knowing SOMETHING about each candidate to sway their vote. An ignorant vote is more damaging than a non-vote, IMO.

That's funny... people told me my 3rd party vote was a vote for Clinton...

Perhaps the issue here is the duopoly.

Kep's #4 is correct. This election was more about anger at DC (Drain the Swamp! / MAGA).

Did Myopic Mitch and Ranger Ryan read the message? Hell no! Stay the course. Shaft them all! Shaft them all! The yellow, the white, and the brown.

Trump didn't read it either. Goldman Sach's is running everything. They are the swamp and anyone with a brain knows it.

The idea that dump is taking a turn to try to send his political opponent in jail is a bad turn. This is happening in other countries that are turning away from democracy. As well as the attacks on the press that publish bad things about the leader. It goes right along the idea that he would not accept the election results had he lost.

How R's are not alarmed by these moves is beyond me.

But when our resident anti-globalist has no real concern about russia even being involved in our election in a tangential way- well, that says a lot.

How did we get SO into being ideologs that it's about the party over the country? So much for being great again.

Aren't the democrats trying to send Trump and his friends/family to jail? My guess is this is a counter attack to gain leverage in his own situation.

The secret service lease story is pretty irresponsible without knowing all the facts. If Trump tried to gouge them he absolutely should get hammered over it, but no where in the story does it say what the parties made for offers. He should offer them a small discount on whatever the normal rent is for that space, but I don't see why he needs to do anymore than that.

I think it is changing, but I agree with you that there is a question as to whether it has changed enough.

Bernie's success ought to spawn copycats just looking for a winning message, not to mention inspiring people who genuinely understand and build on his ideas, which are, after all, the traditional ideas of the left and only seem weird because they have been so successfully censored by the right and the corporate state and self-censored by the left for a half century.

With Warren et al's success. we will be seeing more of this. And every day more Boomers die and more of the reflexive "hate teh communism me do!!!11!" idiocy dies with them.

We have lived for so long bending over backwards appealing to the worst among the electorate that we have lost the ability to even conceive of appealing to the best. There's a lot of energy in doing that. People don't trudge to the polls as a duty when they believe in what they are voting for. Reagan showed that, Obama showed that, hell, even Trump showed that.

So, three non-elected Presidents in 7 months. Bannon, Kushner, Kelly.

Re: POTUS 45.15 - Now With More Yacht Banging Stories!

Hey remember when Righties and the "I Didnt Vote For Trump I am Just Asking the Question" people were using Susan Rice as a boogeyman? Apparently McMasters Disagrees With You

From the article:

Almost one month after Lake broke that story, McMaster appears to have sent a letter to Rice informing her that she could maintain her security clearance, according to the conservative news outlet Circa, which obtained a copy of the letter.

McMaster added that he would "waive the requirement that you must have a ‘need-to-know’ to access any classified information contained in items you 'originated, reviewed, signed or received while serving,' as National Security Adviser."

"Going forward, the NSC will continue to work with you to ensure the appropriate security clearance documentation remains on file to allow you access to classified information," read the letter, which bears McMaster's signature.

McMaster said that the decision is based on his determination that "such access is consistent with the national security interests of the United States, and that appropriate steps have been taken to protect classified information from unauthorized disclosure or compromise."

The White House is not pleased ;)

Vs. the overall question of Russian intervention, that is 100% irrelevant.

And that's the problem- dump wants to paint the WHOLE question as a hunt against him. It's not- it's MUCH larger than that- it's also about them hacking our voting machines, ANY influence on ANY candidate (dump got involved because his people got caught).

If we ignore the whole situation because one part of it may or may not be guilty, that is bad.

You can't tell me that it's ok that a foreign country can force some influence on our elections and democracy.

Re: POTUS 45.15 - Now With More Yacht Banging Stories!

After the two and a half decade long circus surrounding GOP efforts to nail Bill and Hillary Clinton, all of which failed except a sex act and Bill's denial of it, it's pretty entertaining to see people like Drew question the current investigation into Trump's conduct, nearly all of which covers acts that are easily verified, usually by Trump's own tweets and public statements.

A special prosecutor can only be established by the president, and funded by Congress. Which of those two branches are controlled by the Democrats?

They nailed her in the end. She didn't get elected. And one of the reasons has to be the 2 and 1/2 decade assault on her character.
