I haven't figured out yet how to talk to people who think science is a joke, and that women should be sent back to the dark age.

Then this is your problem. You need to figure out how to relate to these people on their level, and not talk down and condescend to them. their beliefs and views are just as valid as yours.

Again, the gleeful condemnation and finger pointing of "our party" is virtuous and "your party" is evil is a misdiagnosis and is abetting Trumpism. The problems with Republican authoritarianism are in part a reaction to this attitude, and this attitude is making it worse every day. If it helps you get past this, think of the difference between calling Islam a poisonous ideology vs. calling Muslims poisonous idealogues. People are individuals. What political party you most recently cast a vote for should not be in the top 30 of the ways you define yourself or others.
to;dr you and I need to work together to banish Trumpism. The alternative is to surrender to it.

I've lost track of the leanings politically of some of us on the board so I apologize if this was meant to be sarcasm.

But if not are you freeking kidding me? Speaking and relating to people who have a fundamental disbelief of science (as one example) is beneath any thinking person. People who disbelieve science are no better than those who disbelieve the existence of gravity. What is the point? Do you really think the person who can't hear what 95% of the last 2 or 3 generations of scientists are saying about something like climate change are ever going to be persuaded to the error of their thinking? Beliefs like that are no more valid than those that say we should stone the gays to death. My time could be better spent arguing with an Ohio State fan about why Michigan is better then going up north and arguing with the Michigan fan about why OSU is better.

I do not identify with the Republican party. Try again.

Edit: to make it more clear: I have no party.

I 100% agree with this, and this goes for anyone, with any affiliation, and anyone who wants to try and fix the problem.

I guess I just need to give up then if I am supposed to accept that those who hate gays or Muslims or Catholics or communists or atheists or anything else that a whole mess of trump supporters hate are thoughts as valid as those I hold.

That, my friends, is a crock of 5h!t. At some point people need to suffer the consequences of their wrong-headedness and downright hateful ways. I refuse to normalize hateful thinking in a misguided aim at trying to be "fair and balanced."

I got it, I was trying to be sarcastic back (and failed!).
And you knew certain people would agree even before you posted it. Trump could start murdering journalists and wed hear from some that journalists were the problem.

So your sane choices are independents or democrats. There is nothing reasonable about today's republicans and anyone that votes for ANY republican is an enabler of their awful platform.
