POTUS 45.1 - You take the high road and I'll take the low road

Re: POTUS 45.1 - You take the high road and I'll take the low road

I, as a libertarian, am heartened to see the left's rediscovered love for states' rights, federalism, protest against the government, separation of powers, and limited executive branch authority. I fondly remember screaming about these things for the last eight years, and being called a knuckle-dragging racist for my efforts.

Moral of the story: never extend powers to the President that you wouldn't want an opposition President to have.
I have resisted the urge this past week to come in here and say "I told you so", since it is admittedly a very shallow thing to do. But given the whining, especially by posters like dx, and the suggestion that conservative posters have disappeared, I'll offer this for your reading pleasure. I suggest you go back and read all of the posts on the subject of Executive Orders in that thread, and the positions taken by lefty and righty posters alike.

But, as Rover pointed out, why should we worry about Executive Orders. If they're really that bad, a Court somewhere will just roll them back. C'est la vie.

Do you think the United States should accept more refugees as long as they keep the vetting procedures in place during the Obama administration?

The Vetting process is very thorough as reported on 60 minutes. Extreme vetting and Muslims bans are fear tactic bull****. So,yes, we should be taking more.

I don't know if this question is directed at me or not, but I'm happy to answer. My position on immigration hasn't changed from that which was universally derided, by right and left alike on this forum, back in the days when Bob Gray still used to post here. I think all immigration laws are basically barbaric. Immigration and emigration are basic instincts possessed by every living thing, not evil plans to cause harm or commit crimes.

If I were President, and had the authority to rule by fiat as appears to be the case, our immigration laws would look like this. You want to move to the U.S.? Welcome. There are just two things to remember. First, you must abide by our laws. That means paying taxes, acquiring a valid drivers license if you want to drive, etc... Second, you don't get a say in how we run things here (i.e., no right to vote) unless and until you actually go through the process to become a citizen.

But, I was told by pretty much everyone here that my position is ridiculous. Ignores "sovereignty" and the like. Where will everyone live? Where will they find work? It'll crush the social welfare systems. We need borders. Blah, blah, blah.

Let me get a ladder for you.

But are you screaming about them today against Trump?

Also: the expansion of powers by the executive has occurred under both parties for the last 80 years. It has been entirely bipartisan, and it has been driven not so much by presidential incursion as legislative retreat from responsibility.

Congress has wailed about their loss of initiative while all the while running away from anything that could bite them. This has not just been bipartisan but bi-branch. It hasn't been a coup, but a gentlemen's agreement.

I fully agree with you we need to reverse it, but the bigger problem has been on the Hill, not in the Oval Office.

You realize this hypocrisy works the other way, too? That the right, screaming bloody murder about the destruction of the balance of powers when it was the (D) for Darky, is now quiet as a mouse?

I'm not saying this exonerates us -- it doesn't.

But it's not exactly your finest hour, either.

Re: POTUS 45.1 - You take the high road and I'll take the low road

Yes, I did. You just didn't like the answer.

What kind of answer is "lets make a new country"?

Do you honestly think that is a possibility???

You think it's easier to make a new country than for the US to increase it's accepting of refugees by two orders of magnitude?

The only reason that we don't accept more refugees is not because we can't, it's because you are afraid. That's it.

On the other hand, there MASSIVE reasons why a new country can't be formed that we can dump all the refugees to. But you don't want to accept them.

Re: POTUS 45.1 - You take the high road and I'll take the low road

There was an article in today's WaPo that the immigration ban will galvanize the Dem base.

What is the Dem base these days?

More false equivalency.

I think Spicer was either fooled or he's (hopefully) going to learn a little bit about how sarcasm is difficult to read in text.

I believe my comments about Executive Orders and Obama came about in the context that his expansion of their use was one of only two real criticisms I had of his administration. I'm pretty sure every time Obama issued an Executive Order I wasn't in here whining in the political threads. Don't expect me to do so now that Trump is issuing them. I've stated my opinion on Executive Orders, and most of you disagreed with me, even though I warned that no party stays in power forever.
