POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

Re: POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

...what's up with those parliamentary systems where some parties get like 13/160 seats?
It could *easily* be done in the US. It starts by naturally building up the new third party at the local level. Then State. Then regional. Then nationally.

But today's society is lazy, and as St. Cloud pointed out, in it only for the instant gratification. So the easiest route to political office is to slap a "D" or an "R" after your name.

Re: POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

Trump nominated some guy I had never heard of to science advisor.

A friend on Facebook who I think is generally a sharp guy responded to a WaPo article calling Gelernter an anti-intellectual.

I read the WaPo article: http://wpo.st/2QxS2

My friend posted this article written by Gelernter and said it was unfair to call him that:
https://www.firstthings.com/article/2015/06/frequencies-of-thought

I read it and thought it was the kind of writing that sounds brilliant but it's really quite empty. Anyone else want to weigh in? Am I wrong? Is the WaPo completely off?

Re: POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

I have now re-read the blog post three times and perhaps it's just way over my head, but I can't find any substance or argument.

Re: POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

In all honesty I recommend avoiding protesting on Fri -- just too many potentially violent morons will be about.

But if you plan to do so, or plan to join us on Sat, some advice from DK:

Get yourself a canteen, and fill with water you trust, before you leave for the march; carry that, and use it to drink from. Two is better. Glass is bad. If there are meds you must have, put at least 24 hours’ worth in a small container and keep that on your person. Many surplus canteen covers have a pocket designed for this.

Add a bandanna to your gear (wet, it can help you breathe despite some forms of tear gas; it’s also good for wrapping e.g. a sprained ankle or washing pepper spray off your face). Make it one you don’t need to keep. Sew a pocket into a second for that container of meds mentioned above, tie ‘round your neck and you’ve got a secure carrier.

If you wear a scarf, wear one with handwarmer pockets.

Wear shoes you know and trust — not new, and please no spike heels. Dress for the weather — if it’s gonna be cold you’ll want several light (adjustable) layers rather than one or two heavy (and mobility-impeding) ones.

On the Sharpie “march tats” — if you carry a phone, and I would not carry my real one, but you’re going to want one with a camera capability — put your ICE (in case of emergency) in a “contact” by those initials in the phone — put an icon on the homescreen — *and* somewhere EMTs can find (back of your hand, across the arch of your foot) in case you’re unable to speak.

I do not expect violence from the orcs on Sat -- truth be told they will likely be recovering from alcohol poisoning -- but it is best to keep alert and safe. These jackwagons are armed, angry, and not bright. Just be safe, please.

Or maybe it's just that 90% of Americans, having been spoiled rotten since birth with no concepts of delayed gratification or compromise...

Are they auditioning for Gran Torino II?

Re: POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

And JFK would have a hard time in the current Dem.

then what party would JFK be in? If you think either JFK or Lincoln would align themselves with today's Republican party you are an idiot. JFK was hampered by conservative Republicans and Dixicrats in congress, so he was more moderate than many would have liked, but there is no way he would go for the **** the Republican's have built their current platform on.

Anyone that aligns themselves with the Republicans today is an ******* or an idiot.

Re: POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

cut taxes

different time, different tax rates. The Republican's continue to cut taxes far beyond what is helpful or what we can afford. Just because JFK cut taxes doesn't mean he'd align himself with the party of the neo nazis now.

Wasn't the top tax rate like 90% when he was in office? He walked into a little different situation than what we have today.

Re: POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

I heard the other day the Republicans are again planning on cutting Arts, Humanities, and PBS.

Idiots.

It's part of their "skinny budget" plan that will trim a whole whopping 0.02% off the federal budget.

For comparison's sake, if president Trump weighs 275 lbs., that's equivalent to him going on a diet and losing almost nine tenths of an ounce of weight.

Re: POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

A question... and I should know this... Abe Lincoln was a very progressive Republican, almost radical, at a time the democrats were very conservative. When did the parties switch philosophies? Was it gradual or sudden?

There's not one single point at which the parties switch sides. They both made gradual movements, largely starting at the very early points of the 1900s, and completed the switch around the passing of the ERA. If you search the web, you can find some pretty interesting and objective historical blogs on this subject.

I love the arts and the last thing I would want to see is anything bad happen to them, but they do attract gigantic private donations and I'm not sure there would be any negative effects if the government pulled funding for them.
