Potter out at Ohio State

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

Took a look at OSU website, no updates on this years roster, anyone know what Freshman or new players(transfers) will be playing this year ? Website is lacking given school starts on Monday.

Actually school started this past Tuesday. But yes, some sort of update would be nice.

It seems that women's hockey is not high on the priority list of whoever maintains ohiostatebuckeyes.com. The only thing new with the women's hockey section of the website is they have removed all the coaches from the roster and they do have this season's schedule up. The roster itself has not been updated as last year's seniors are still included. I also noticed the exhibition game vs the Toronto Jr Aeros originally scheduled for 9/22 appears to have been canceled as it does not appear on the schedule.

A lot of fingers pointed at the admin which leaves me a bit confused. Comments about women's hockey not being a priority at OSU fairly frequent on this site. From the outside looking in, the admin looked after an apparent issue last year and that coach resigned. This year for reasons that remain unknown, they let go of Potter. Seems like they are paying attention to women's hockey and what goes on with this team. Is timing great and is this what everyone signed up for? Of course not however you hear of many similar issues happening elsewhere and no action takes place. Take your pick. You have a great core of players at OSU, a great school, great facilities and support system. The time is now to line up a strong coach and the future is bright. Enjoy your day!

Although I agree with the main point of your post I think it's pretty well known that the school does not have "great facilities" for hockey. In fact if they were really "paying attention to women's hockey" they would use some of the zillions brought in from their football program and upgrade their hockey facilities to at least average.

I'll try and clear up the confusion for you. First off, we have the worst facility in the WCHA. That is an incontrovertable fact. Secondly, we're working on our third coach in three seasons. If that is "paying attention to women's hockey," then I don't want to see our athletic department "not pay attention to women's hockey." I totally agree with you that we have a great core of players at tOSU (thankfully, it appears most are staying) and a great school, but you lost me with "great facilities and support system" when that is simply not the case and hasn't been for a long time. I do agree with you that we need to bring in a strong coach and that the future could be bright, but I will have to respectfully disagree with your constant defending of an athletic department that has never provided our women's program with the facilities or resources they need to compete for championships. In regard to your last sentence, I am enjoying my day. I enjoy this site where we can debate things like this 24/7/365, and I am looking forward to hockey season even though we do not have a coach at this time. If there is one thing I know about our girls, there is talent there and they are resilient, probably more resilient about this whole situation than I am. I see it as a major setback that our kids will have a third different coach in three seasons. I imagine they are just wanting to get on the ice and play the sport we all love, and prove they can win games despite the circumstances. They're great kids, and I'll be there to support them and cheer them on, as always.

I'm with D2D, if the administration was really paying attention to women's hockey, they would take some of the money from the billions they have banked from football and at least get our women's hockey facilities on par with the other seven schools in the WCHA.

To be clear, facilities and support extend beyond the hockey rink. As for the 3 coaches in 3 years, not likely the desired outcome but it happened and now all we can do is hope for a positive outcome.

I agree on hoping for a positive outcome. I just think it is going to be very difficult to get a difference-making coach at this stage in the game.

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

Just thinking outside the box here. In Basketball mid major teams will often look at AAU coaches or High School coaches from a fertile recruiting area. Would OSU look at this route? Let's face it. College is all about recruiting the best talent. Get a person from Chicago, Boston, or twin Cities who is close to many of the talented players coming up. Or if I am the AD of OSU do I go after a Canadian Assistant National coach and bring that pipeline down if I think I can not get Minnesota or Boston kids to come?

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

Hearing that Minnesota assistant Nadine Muzerall will be named Head Coach as soon as later today.

It that is true, good for them! I would say that would make this a good day for women's hockey generally speaking :)

From my personal GWH viewpoint, it would be a dark day :(

If so, they must have come through with some good Ohio State Athletic Department Dinero

Great hire, and a big congrats to Nadine, but like KTDC as a Gopher fan I'm very sad to see her go. :(

I doubt the women's hockey head coach job at Ohio State is even a separate line item regardless of what they pay given the checks they write for major sport coaches. I envision a budget something like this:

- Men's Football Coaches - $1 gazillion
- Men's Basketball Coaches - slightly less than $1 gazillion (only because there are fewer of them)
- Other miscellaneous men's coaches - $pay a little attention because men's hockey costs some money
- Other miscellaneous women's coaches - $don't pay attention because it is less than 10% of total

Is this an interim position? If not, nice jump for her. Second assistant with just five years experience to head coach.

Kind of an odd comment considering Potter's lack of coaching experience (2 years at an above average D3 team?). At least Muzerall is coming from an incredibly successful D1 program/position with five years experience under a great coach.

Sorry my friend this is where you find up and coming talent. I would suggest one would be hard pressed to find anyone that is not already a head coach with a better resume. Oh yes and a quick search of the net shows she was a "head coach " of a program prior to signing on with Minnesota. She knows what it takes to win…..I think this is a Win-Win for OSU Women's hockey !

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

It seems better and may be BUT face it don't know and won't know for a few years.

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

If this is true, tOSU went for an up and comer and got themselves a good one. This would be terrific selection as she comes from one the top programs in the country, has head coaching experience and Hockey Canada thought enough of her to involve her with their program. However.....until it is confirmed, it is still speculation. Very, very interesting and as someone else mentioned, this is a good move for women's hockey.

That is good news if true. At this time, I have yet to see anything on ohiostatebuckeyes.com. I will check back later and provide a link if someone else doesn't beat me to it.
