Potter out at Ohio State

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

Completely blindsided by this. I'm rarely on campus during the summer months, and didn't have a clue this was coming. Hoping for the best as the program moves forward, but truly don't know what to think.

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

Carson Duggan was the glue that kept this team together last year………the rest of you can determine why she departed. OSU would be wise to bring her back !
I've always held Carson in high regard.

I am still in shock by the whole thing. Having three different coaches in three seasons is no way to move a program forward. I am hoping for the best, but I don't see this situation moving the program forward. I feel bad for the girls. They're the ones who are getting hurt the most by this insanity. In regard to the earlier speculation in this thread, I am more likely to believe the recruiting violations than a couple girls threatening to transfer as most of this team liked Jenny and played hard for her. It was fairly obvious to anyone who attended games regularly that this team was improving as the season went on, and with Kassidy Sauve and Jincy Dunne coming back from injuries, as well as the other returning players, most of us expected the team to continue to improve. I'm with pgb, not sure what to think at this point. The only thing I know right now is we start practicing next month and we have no coach. It's ironic, last year I was pleasantly shocked that we had hired Jenny Potter, now I am unpleasantly shocked that she was let go. The sun will continue to come up, and hopefully most of the girls stay, but I am sure there will be some defections, and I certainly won't blame any of them.

Wasn't she the assistant coach that showed up late to the airport with Nate after they both had been drinking? I thought that story came out when Nate was fired.

Don't worry too much everyone. I predict they'll still make it to the WCHA playoffs no matter who the coaches are so it's not really that big of a deal because nobody else is going to beat the Badgers and Gophers in the playoffs anyway so it's all a moot point. It's always a battle for who is "the best of the rest."

I've had the opportunity to interact directly with Carson. While the time I've spent with her is admittedly limited, I found her to be positive and professional in each case. By reputation, she's a good coach who treats players in a respectful manner. Those were the things I had in mind.

I'm not defending the morning in question. No doubt Carson would do things differently that day if she had the chance. But I don't believe that particular mistake disqualifies a person from further employment, or suggests that she's beyond redemption. Obviously OSU reached the same conclusion at the relevant juncture.

Olayoffs...Now that could be intriguing. :)

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

It's actually an Olympic style corporate challenge to see which company can layoff the greatest number of employees....thus, Olayoffs. ;)

I heard the facial care co., Olay, had pulled out of the challenge. Anyway, good luck to the Bucs, that's a tough situation for those girls.

Sincerely doubt she would leave her job. She appears to be a rising star at TSN.

In my view, she shouldn't be considered a candidate for the head coaching position. She really has no experience and even as an AC, she would be learning. Would she even be interested in considering a move into the coaching profession? She has a pretty good gig in Canada. There are likely much better candidates that would be interested in this opportunity. The next move by admin has to be a move for the future. If I am a recruit, I am hanging tight and anxiously waiting for what transpires over the next few weeks. This could be a very competitive team if all of the pieces are kept together.

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

Wasn't Dan Koch a candidate 5 or 6 years ago for the Ohio St. job?

I hope not! Mark Johnson isn't getting any younger. The OSU coach....I was referring to a very nice and outgoing Canadian lady who used to be the coach of a successful Minnesota team.

Aha! And while we are promoting 20th Century coaching techniques for motivating 21st Century players, maybe OSU would also consider bringing back wooden sticks.

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

Who do they find to coach at this late hour? Well, IMO it needs to be someone desperate for a job and who is currently unemployed. Hmmmmmmmmm? Does Shannon Miller give up her bicycle business to return to coaching? Stay tuned.

I don't want Coach Koch going anywhere either! I just happened to remember his name being mentioned in the past as a candidate for that job. I don't see much positive out of this situation at all.. No matter who they find to coach this season. Every player wants to know where they stand with a coaching staff. Lots of uncertainty now for many of the players..

Players wanting to know where they stand is normal and no different on any team. I am not sure how this can be perceived as being a negative. The new staff may be delayed for a month or so assessing the talent they have however if it is someone close to the WCHA or women's D1 hockey in general, this should not be a disabler or an issue. The challenge for the new coach will be to convince 2017-2018 recruits that OSU is still a great option for them and that they should honor their commitments. There lies the challenge. A recognizable name will help that goes without saying. Not sure that brining in the former UMD coach is the answer however one cannot deny her past successes. Interesting challenge for all of those involved and I continue to believe that this is a great opportunity for a strong assistant or for a HC who is at one of the smaller schools.
