Potter out at Ohio State

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

Is it too bad for OSU?? Who knows, only time will tell. One thing is certain, the next hire better be there for a while and come with a strong coaching pedigree.

It's definitely too bad for OSU! This will be the third coach in the last three seasons and the athletic department has about a month (or less, really) to find someone. This is catastrophic and is going to set the program back. I am sure other schools are already negative recruiting against OSU and attempting to poach our players, so my answer to your initial question would be a resounding yes, it is too bad for OSU. I totally agree with your last statement, although I sincerely doubt we get that person with one month to go until practice starts.

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

Some of the girls, or players on the team, continue to complain to the admin about their coach, the admin responds by firing the coach.. This has happened twice with the women's program and once with the men's program in the last 4 years...if you think it's anything else you're being naive.

I am well aware of what happened with Osiecki and Handrahan. I am just not as sure as you are, apparently, that that is the case this time. And regarding your other post about our athletic administration, well, if you have been around here in recent years, I have not hesitated to let everyone know how I feel about our athletic department's support (or lack thereof) of both of our hockey programs. I just eventually decided to tone it down because I think everyone got sick of me *****ing about it. It's no secret that the OSU Ice Rink is the worst facility in the entire league. Gene Smith talks out of both sides of his mouth. He'll tell the media he expects all our teams to compete for championships, but he doesn't provide either of our hockey programs with the support or facilities they need to win championships. Thanks for "poking the bear." I am sure the rest of the gang appreciates me getting all riled up about our AD's treatment of hockey at tOSU. :D

Carson Duggan was the glue that kept this team together last year………the rest of you can determine why she departed. OSU would be wise to bring her back !

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

This is a really tough time to bring in a coach.

What about D3 Head Coaches with D1 experience? Someone like Meridith Roth at St Norberts but formerly a coach at Providence and with Cornell? She was a top D1 player and has done a good job recruiting US and Canada

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

Tough to comment until we know what happened for sure, but ya, this looks awful for our program. Two coaches in two years, with the former getting fired for sexual harassment and the latter getting let go less than a week before the start of the school year. Throw in the rink and last year's record and ask yourself, if you were a recruit with options, would you choose Ohio State?

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

Interesting. Tough gig and Coach Potter seems like she could probably smile a bit more and loosen up. I know she is intense but I think she over does it.

OMG is she intense. We sit behind the opposing bench at the UW home games and she was intimidating as all heck. She was stone faced the whole time. Her hubby and kids sat behind us and a little to the right and they seemed kind of frightened as to what might happen. Too bad for the players, they deserve a better fate coach-wise, but they are getting a decent education in the process and they are playing a game they love. It's not all bad. We really need the facts before we lynch any OSU leadership.

Some new head coach is going to inherit Jincy Dunne, Kassidy Sauve and some pretty damm good recruits in 2017 and 2018.

Well Ohio State better be very careful about WHO that coach is because as of now no 2017 or 2018 commits are binding. If I was a top player in one of those birth years, I'd do some exploring. Maybe find a school that truly supports the women's hockey program.

Clearly the next few weeks and the steps that will be taken by the admin are critical for this program. I also wonder if current players are not considering options as well?? It's a young team with a tremendous amount of upside and one would believe that the position would be attractive for a seasoned or up and coming coach.

The white van with a hand painted "Free Skates" sign is gassed up and ready to go. :)

I agree with your last statement. Last year after Handrahan was let go I bashed the athletic department and it ended up biting me. However, given this athletic department's continued lack of support for our hockey programs (especially the women's program), I'm not letting them off the hook anytime soon.

Not knowing who they have verbals from, is there some top end talent UM or UW would like to have?

UW has already grabbed Ohio State's leading scorer from last year.. She will have to sit out this season but, she will be a Badger for 2017-18..Also I believe (according to the college commitment page) there are 5 additional forwards already committed to next season as well. Doesn't leave much room for any additions..

Re: Potter out at Ohio State

I have been told that the rumor of recruiting issues is unfounded.

It appears that the ladies had enough of the coaching "style". Similar to the issues at Trinity.

Apparently there is a large enough group of athletes that threatened to transfer immediately if no change was made, the school would have had a hard time putting a team on the ice for games.

If this is indeed the case it will be interesting what the "official" word is when released.

My take is that this is not a player complaint issue. My understanding is that JP was liked by the majority of the players. There will always be a few disgruntled players on any team and if they leave, it is quite likely that the team chemistry is better. Threatening to transfer? Good luck doing that in late August. Sitting out a year? Makes no sense for most of these players. If you take a moment to think about what you wrote, the recruiting theory is more palatable.

Kepler is coming to WI? Where do you find this stuff out? Amazing! I always wondered how she ended up at OSU and not UW.

Heard it through the grapevine.. She will be a good addition next season with Nurse, McKibbon, and Johnson graduating and the likelihood of Pankowski and Clark playing for their National teams..

Yeah, you'd hate lose a season because your 2 best players are playing for their national teams. This will help. It gives UW 15 F with Panny and Clark on the roster.
