Post-Apocalyptic (BTHC) WCHA Biggest Rivalries

So...

With the removal of MN and WI to the BTHC, who's everybody's biggest rival? I think for a lot of teams their answer is different with just those two teams gone, and with the noobs in the WCHA, may even be a question they hadn't even answered yet.

Post your team (unless its obvious) and who you consider your biggest rival. I'm really split on this one, for SCSU I think its UND or tUMD, but I'll give NoDak the nod.

Well, DU fans think they are better than CC fans but they still remain a rival to me. In all truth, that makes it fun.

I think both CO teams would like to build a rivalry with UNO but that would probably take years. All of the UNO fans I’ve come across are too nice to really hate.

My strategy? Everyone sucks… I’ll give an auto cred to UAA because Donald is a WINNER and I’ve meet a few of their other WINNING fans.

For the Huskies I think it will start out as the Sioux. Although if UMD can build on this season and continue to have regular success year in and year out I think it could slowly transition to the Bulldogs (because let's face it, other than a couple years UMD really hasn't been consistently good the last decade.)

Sioux-Pios? UMD and UNO might make a push, but those would clearly be the two most competitive. Other than that, you've probably got to go with the local matchups (DU-CC, UND-BSU-UMD, MSUM-SCSU)

I wouldn't say decades upon decades.....just a decade and a half. I can see how it might feel like we've had that much success though.

Okay, I had to put that in there just to get a response from a UMD fan. We can only let you ride on your high horse for so long. Congrats on the title by the way, I was glad to see your team pull out the win over Michigan. Considering I went to UMD for two years I'm probably much more cordial toward your program than most Husky fans.

Obvious Gopher fan is obvious:

tUMD and SCSU HATE each other, at least the fanbases do. UND-DU have a fan and team rivalry, which if you have any hockey knowledge you know why.

I think BSU and UNO are too new to the WCHA to have a rivalry yet, but I'm sure something will happen down the line to really kick a rivalry into gear.

Obviously DU-CC have a rivalry, but from what I've seen in the past couple years, I think DU considers UND their #1.

Other than that? It's pretty much open to what game events unfold after MN and WI leave.

tUMD and SCSU HATE each other, at least the fanbases do. UND-DU have a fan and team rivalry, which if you have any hockey knowledge you know why.

I think the SCSU-UMD hate is more of a USCHO/Internet message board thing than a General Fanbase thing. There is a certain group of both fanbases that truly hate each other and they seem to have mostly gone to school around 1999-2005 and post regularly on college hockey message boards. There were also a few of unfortunate incidents involving SCSU fans (and were, admittedly, the fault of said fans) that soured the more casual UMD fans to SCSU fans. I think the dislike among the general fanbases has simmered down considerably in recent years and, in fact, I don't think SCSU fans, as a whole, ever particularly disliked UMD fans. When I moved from St. Cloud to go to school at UMD in the fall of 2001 I had no problem rooting for the Bulldogs because I considered them "just another team" like UAA or Colorado College.

That being said I think UMD will be considered our 2nd biggest rival. UND will take over for the Gophers as our "biggest" rival, although most SCSU fans realize that we are down the list of rivals for both the Gophers and the Nickname TBD.

I think that this is a good observation on your part. I've seen a number of people saying that NoDak will be their new biggest rival, but it's only a "rivalry" if NoDak feels the same way.

That's not to be confused with NoDak being the team that everyone wants to beat the most. I've no doubt that will be the case.

That's not to be confused with NoDak being the team that everyone wants to beat the most. I've no doubt that will be the case.

UND-DU will be one of the most heated rivalries in the WCHA, the closest if not a tie with SCSU-tUMDncs.

Danver and Nord Dagoota are really starting to hate each other and with the race for the MacNaugton every year that will probably be dominated by the two(post B^TCH) I see a growing rivalry, that and UND gets tired of DU fans that have their noses so high in the air they can smell God's farts....

Yeah, when thinking about it this is pretty much right on. While UND probably packs our arena more than most teams (mainly due to all the Sioux fans that travel) I don't think it can be considered a top rivalry. At least most UND folks don't see it that way.

I haven't been following USCHO too closely for a number of years (it basically goes in streaks now) and I guess I didn't realize so much hostility had built up between posters from SCSU/UMD. I'm not sure what "unfortunate incidents" HumRsky is referring to but if anyone wants to fill me in on here or by PM I'd appreciate it. I posted the most between 99-02 (I had to rejoin in '09 since uscho inactivated my account since I hadn't logged on for a few years) and to be honest I think there was more vitriol within our own fanbase than was directed toward anyone else at that time.......wait that isn't right, it went gopher fans and then fighting within the SCSU fanbase. I always thought beersong (really the first regular UMD poster I remember) seemed like a good guy and I think I've seen him lurking around here every once in awhile. I do agree it would be nice to have an in-state rivalry where both teams have the other as #1 on their list. I would think that's possible while still keeping the dialog somewhat respectful, but really what fun would a rivalry be without some good trash talking. Unfortunately after this year UMD has the upperhand.

The animosity on the boards was centered around DHG and Rabid Husky and spread out from there. The main incident I'm aware of is a St. Cloud fan (I'm told it was Rabid) nearly knocking the Maroon Loon over the balcony at the DECC for squirting him with a squirtgun. I remember Ciskie saying a Husky fan yelled something rude at him in the parking lot in front of his wife and child. I've also heard that that Husky fans were just generally more boorish than fans from other teams in the late '90s and early 2000s

I will also say that my wife (who is a Bulldog fan) have attended a lot off SCSU-UMD games in both cities and have received a lot more flak at the NHC for wearing opposing jerseys and that flak was more mean-spirited. I do think the rivalry, except among a few individuals, has mellowed considerably in the past few years.

Let's not forget Bruce Raboin's horrid behavior last year and the year before.
