I don't disagree with your statistics, it's just that the game is more than numbers.. Having seen all their games this year except 2 and all playoff games, years of watching Cardinal hockey, I feel I can be very realistic and optimistic too. There is leadership, work ethic, emotion, pure grit and so much more that come into play. I just feel that this team is capable of more than a third or fourth place finish. You may say I see things through rose colored glasses maybe, but mine are RED!Numbers don't lie, there's being optimistic and realistic
Quoting Mark Twain: " There are lies, **** lies and statistics". Time will tell, but quoting someone else most of us know: "Hockey is a game of emotion". We have seen so many games turn on just thst. Saying it again, time will tell.I don't disagree with your statistics, it's just that the game is more than numbers.. Guess I didn't realize that censorship of language was part of the deal here. So much for a direct quotation.Quoting Mark Twain: " There are lies, **** lies and statistics". The one positive I saw was Plattsburgh skated circles around AL. Either Platty was extremely fast, or AL was extremely slow.In the unlikely event everyone cares, here are my thoughts on the exhibition game tonight:
-PP did nothing to improve my comfidence, really. The PP unit has been fairly bad for a few years now, and the Cards had 1 good PP tonight (and they scored, who would have figured?).
-Valente was all over the ice tonight. Of the returning players, he had probably the best performance tonight.
-The freshman: a few that caught my eye, for sure. I was told Stallard was the one to watch, but just about the only times I noticed him were when he was taking a penalty or turning the puck over. Thankfully, even those were infrequent. Ragone played well, and that snipe from the top of the circle was BEAUTIFUL. Engvall is a BIG boy, and he started the game looking a bit off-balance, but once he setlled in you saw that he actually has some decent speed and looked to be reading the game well. That Neher/Owens/Sloan line looked like they have built a good chemistry already, escpeciall Neher and Owens. Owens was probably the one freshman who most caught my attention tonight. 4 of 5 goals tonight were scored by freshmen.
-The defense played well, for the most part. But what impressed me was the forecheck and the offensive contribution by the men on the blueline. 3 goals by defensemen (Neher's 2 were the only goals by Plattsburgh forwards), and a ton of the shots on net were from defensemen or off of passes coming from defensemen. That's not necessarily a bad thing, and could be a sign of how Plattsburgh's offensive play is going to work this year.
-I hate these exhibition games if for no reason than I am always afraid someone is going to get hurt, especially when your opponent usually plays under a different set of rules that might be more lenient on rough physical play than NCAA.
Like I said, just my thoughts and impressions.

It goes right back to my original thought, not enough pure scorers. Not enough finishers. I will have to run some data but your elite teams always seem to score goals on fewer shots (also why PP numbers can be so down). Talented? Yes. But lacking those "finishers".
There were a couple guys riding the bikes in the corner by the ice entrance....not sure who they were.....I agree I don't think we have had that pure goal scorer since Joey Wilson, they have had many talented all around players but none with the shoot first shoot often mentality.
I really liked Chaisson on D, he was calm in one on one situations let the play come to him instead of chasing the puck. He caught an edge trying to get to the guy on the breakaway for the first goal and the first thing he did after the goal was go up to Brady and take the blame. Engvall needs some muscle he was getting pushed around by smaller guys but he has a good shot and pretty good speed for that size.
Sloan really impressed me because he was really throwing his weight around, I saw I few big hits that caused turnovers. Owens has great vision and could be a very good playmaker. Neher seemed to be at the right spot at the right time a lot which is a good sign. The others that I had really wanted to see didn't show a lot, but again getting used to the play is more important in an exhibition.
Where was Gorman, Hermans and Taft? Injured or other issues?

Hermans, Taff & Gorman did not play Saturday .... 1 sick, other two non-injury scratches. Way too early to draw any conclusions on exhibition game, but looks like a very deep team. Only three from last year that did not return were seldom used Ryan Hubbard, Andrew Rossy and Josh Koerner. Will miss Beadow, Toomey, Cassidy, Kaye, Brenton & Constantine. But the replacements - Stallard, Owens, Egan, Sloan, Engvall, Chiasson, Ragone, Neher & Belger should pick up the slack nicely.
Valente did look very good. So did Chiasson. Finney or Rouleau didn't break a sweat. Scoring goals continues to be a bit of a problem. Hopefully, we get a big surprise from one of the new guys.
I have 3 tiks for the Platty game vs Oswego in Oswego section 53......... lacasagrande@aol.com
