NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Freshman forward Connor Gorman scored a goal and tallied an assist to lead the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team to a 2-0 win over the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) in the consolation game of the 15th annual PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut at Norwich University’s Kreitzberg Arena.

After a scoreless first period that featured a large portion of time in the neutral zone and just four total shots on goal between both teams, Plattsburgh (6-2-0, 5-1-0 SUNYAC) quickly tallied two goals 1:03 apart to seize momentum in the second period.

Sophomore forward Mark Constantine opened the scoring at the 3:27 mark of the second stanza off an assist from Connor Gorman to put the Cardinals up 1-0. Constantine beat St. Thomas goalie Tyrone Simcoe to the left side of the cage off an assist from Gorman.

Just over a minute later, Plattsburgh State struck again with Gorman capitalizing on a power-play opportunity. Gorman found himself in the right place at the right time tapping home a rebound that was lying in the crease after Simcoe made the initial save on Andrew Smith’s shot from the point.

St. Thomas (5-4-1, 4-0-0 MIAC) had a golden opportunity to cut into the Cardinals’ lead with a 1:24 of 5-on-3 power play time early in the third period. However, the Tommies were unable to move the puck effectively through Plattsburgh’s defense.

Midway through the third period Plattsburgh’s Jared Docking made a bid to extend the lead. Docking carried the puck into the Tommies’ end and cut in front of Simcoe but his shot caught a piece of the St. Thomas netminder and deflected off the crossbar.

The underlying story of Saturday’s game was Plattsburgh goaltender Sam Foley, who was called upon for the second start of his collegiate career. Foley, a junior out of Woodbury, Minn., stopped all 15 shots he faced to earn his first career victory and shutout for the Cardinals.

Simcoe made 19 saves in the loss for St. Thomas.

The Cardinals outshot the Tommies 21-15. Plattsburgh went 1-for-5 on the power play while St. Thomas was 0-for-3.

The PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut all-tournament team will be announced later tonight following the conclusion of the championship game between Middlebury and tournament host, Norwich.

The tough stretch in Plattsburgh’s schedule continues next weekend as the Cardinals return to conference play on the road at Cortland and Oswego. The Cardinals and Red Dragons will face-off on Friday before the weekend wraps up with a Saturday showdown between Plattsburgh and Oswego. Both games are set for 7 p.m.

Who is our golie people? I am so confused now! Oh for the days of a one golie system! What do we do now? Go with Sam, get Chewy back on track, or go all the way backwards and with Leis?

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

What decision? Do you expect him to play Chewy every game? He didn't even do that with Sundberg. It was predetermined that if Plattsburgh lost he would sit Chewy to give him a break and start Josh Saturday. When Josh showed up late, he was benched, just as he does with every player, and Sam started.

Chewy would have been the teams starter from day 1 had he come into the season "in shape" enough under Bobs standards as Bob's said time and time again.

Pardon my ignorance, who is "Chewy," Chewbacca from Star Wars?

Your right he didn't start Sundberg every game, but it sure seemed it by the stats I found on him on USCHO. Just by this alone 32 and 29 games his last two years is rather spectacular and it is hard to compare anyone else to that. Bob has his methods, its just hard to understand as a "fan" is all I am saying.

I don't expect anything! Just tryn to understand it cause it doesn't seem like a typical or normal thing.

I don't understand why this is even being questioned. Bob's methods are simply what Champs said, giving Chewy a break every now and then. Leis and probably Foley would be starters for more than half the D3 schools.

OK then I will just give in to the premiss of discipline and giving people a break, just as Champs said. I just figure that consistency with goalies is a good thing and just the back and forth has been tough to watch over the last few years. It was nice to see Chewy in consecutive games last year and good to see him get on a role behind great defense.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

I gather "Chewey" is Cadieux which doesn't look like Chewey to me :D

As described in this Cardinal Points article about nicknames among the student-athletes, "Chewey" originates from:

Ice hockey goalie Mathieu “Chewy” Cadieux was born with his nickname.
Teammate Alex Jensen said that when Cadieux’s mother, Michelle Cadieux, announced Mathieu, her French accent sounded as if she was calling him “Mat-chew.”

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

Thank you. That was driving me crazy - As I said, the only Chewy that I could think of was Chewbacca from the original Star Wars move (Episode 4)

At least you didn't think of the little round tins ;)

Cards visit Cortland, Oswego this weekend {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 11/30/2012}

This weekend the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team plays what forward Mark Constantine calls “one of the biggest games of the year.”

But not until Saturday.

First the Cardinals visit Cortland tonight, and then they’ll meet archrival Oswego, trying to keep the Lakers out of their minds until Saturday.

“It’s hard to do obviously because it’s Oswego. But just gotta have it in your mind-set that we have to win the first game first,” Constantine said. “Even if we do beat Oswego and we lose to Cortland, it’s a bad weekend. It’s not a winning weekend.”

Plattsburgh (6-2, 5-1 SUNYAC), ranked seventh, lost its Friday game the last two weeks, so it will start the weekend by trying to stop that trend.

Cortland (2-6-1, 2-4) lost to and tied with Neumann in a nonconference series last week. The Red Dragons’ SUNY Athletic Conference wins came against Morrisville and Fredonia. They put up four goals against Oswego in October, losing 7-4.

I hope we have the leadership going into Cortland (tonight) because a lot of people think it’s a trap game,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “Cortland’s been in every game they’ve played, and we’re not doing ourselves any justice as a player, as a coach, as a team, as a hockey program if we’re overlooking Cortland. Because they’re well coached, and they’re going to be well prepared.”

Oswego (7-0, 6-0) is ranked No. 1 in the USCHO.com Division III Men’s Poll, and it’s also first in the SUNYAC standings, a game ahead of Plattsburgh. The Lakers feature the top two scorers in Division III, Paul Rodrigues (7-13-20) and Luke Moodie (9-10-19).

As a team, they average 6.43 goals per game, which is tied for most in the country. Constantine said the strategy for facing such a high-scoring team is simple.

“Defense,” he said. “Blocking shots, helping the goaltender out, get pucks out of the zone. Try to score goals as well — get on their goalie, score more goals. They might not be used to it. So block shots, score goals. Just play the game.”

Plattsburgh’s scoring has been up this season, although last weekend the Cardinals had trouble capitalizing on opportunities at times.

“I think the Middlebury game was a little bit of last year. We didn’t find the net on our Grade-A scoring chances,” Emery said. “Then we played St. Thomas the next night, played a great game defensively, played a great game offensively and only had two goals to show for it.

So we gotta just keep working hard, and try to find that back of the net. And I think the goals will come. Especially with the young team that we have, eventually they’ll come.”

Constantine, a sophomore, has team-highs with five goals and 10 points, and freshman Luke Baleshta also has 10 points, including a team-leading seven assists.

The Cardinals beat the Lakers 3-2 in last year’s SUNYAC championship game, ending Oswego’s seven-game unbeaten streak in the rivalry.
