Focusing on the task at hand has helped the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team dig itself out of the hole it created to open the 2010-11 season.
"It's an old cliche, but the key for us is to make sure we take it one game at a time," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery.
"And, I think we've done a good job with that even though we still have to get better on the defensive end."
The Cardinals (10-4-0), who ran their winning streak to eight games on Tuesday by overcoming a slow start in a 7-4 victory over Norwich University at the Stafford Ice Arena, host Elmira College tonight at 7 p.m. in non-conference play.
"Giving up four goals against Norwich was still too much," said Emery. "We didn't have good discipline at the start of the game and fell behind. 2-0, early because of penalties."
Plattsburgh State is in the midst of a 10-game homestand where it has won the first three games. The Cardinals, after tonight, will be idle before hosting Williams College on Monday, Jan. 17.
"We get a little break after this game," said Emery. "But, every game is huge for us."
The Soaring Eagles are 7-5-2 overall.
Elmira has played six games against SUNYAC teams thus far and following two losses to Oswego to begin the season, has defeated Morrisville, Brockport, Fredonia and Cortland while scoring a combined 27 goals in those four wins.
The Soaring Eagles are on a three-game winning streak, including a 4-2 victory over Neumann.
Three juniors — Darcy Vaillancourt (9-13-22), Kevin Willer (10-11-21) and Brendan Sanders (2-13-15) — are the leading scorers for Elmira.
Sophomore Darren McDonald has done the majority of the goaltending with a 6-2-2 record and 2.37 gaa,
"Elmira is a great hockey team that plays a tough schedule," said Emery. "They can beat anyone in Division III on a given night.
"They have some star-quality players, including arguably the best forward and best defenseman in Division III.
"Elmira isn't a stranger to this area. They have played us tough many times at our place."
Forwards Patrick Jobb and Jared Docking, who both sat out the Norwich game with injuries, could be back tonight.
"Our goal is to get them back," said Emery. "But, they are both day-to-day and will be game time decisions."
Who is he refering to as the Best forward and best defenceman in D-3 for Elmira?
Linden and Vaillancourt.
The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team was 1:21 away Saturday night from winning its ninth game in a row.
But, Kevin Willer's goal at 18:39 of the third period lifted Elmira College to a hard-fought 2-2 overtime tie with the Cardinals in non-conference play at the Stafford Ice Arena.
"The way they tied it was disappointing because we had the puck on our stick, couldn't get it out of our end and turned it over," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery.
'"But, if someone would have told me we would get seven out of eight points in our first four games back from the Christmas break, with the schedule we had, I would have said, 'Darn right, I'd take it."
The Cardinals (10-4-1) overall, who are still unbeaten in their last nine games, broke a 1-all tie at 14:59 of the third period on Nick Jensen's goal. Jensen knocked down the puck in between the circles and rifled a shot top shelf over Elmira goaltender Darren MacDonald.
But, the Soaring Eagles pulled MacDonald for an extra attacker late in regulation and Willer was able to sneak a backhander from straight on past Plattsburgh State netminder Josh Leis to tie it.
Both teams then had a powerplay in the overtime, but could not get the game-winning goal.
Following a scoreless first period, Dylan Clarke knocked in a rebound from close range for a power-play goal at 12:26 of the second to give the Cardinals the lead.
Willer, however, tallied his first of two goals at the 17:17 mark to pull the Soaring Eagles (7-5-3) even. Elmira took advantage of a Plattsburgh State turnover, which led to basically a three-on-one. Willer found the net inside the near post past Leis.
"It was a good defensive game by both teams," said Emery. "I thought we played great defensively in the second period, except for their goal.
"That was one of the most selfish plays I've ever seen from one of our players when he turned over the puck at the blueline. We gave Elmira the chance to score the goal."
The final shots on goal reflected the evenly-played game. Plattsburgh State finished with a 28-27 edge, with Leis making 25 saves and MacDonald, 26.
"It's about getting the puck out of our own end," said Emery. "We still need to get better and you hope to learn from your mistakes.
"But, we had some key guys out tonight and Elmira is a real good team. They played the body well on defense. We're going to give the players the next three days off after the difficult stretch of games we've had of late."
The Cardinals are idle until they host Williams College on Monday, Jan. 17 in a rare 4 p.m. non-conference game.
Cardinals, Soaring Eagles skate to tie - {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 1/9/2011}
Can someone enlighten who Emery is talking about in these two quotes?
"That was one of the most selfish plays I've ever seen from one of our players when he turned over the puck at the blueline"
"But, we had some key guys out tonight."
Many thanks

Quote 1: Bessing. Had the puck. His linemates were skating to the bench for a change. Instead of dumping it and getting HIMSELF off the ice, he decided to take it is. Got about 2 feet past the blueline when Darcy Vaillancourt absolutely picked his pocket. Lead to an odd man rush and Elmira's first goal.
Quote 2: Jobb and Docking were still out. With Roytman sitting out because of his dumb penalty (he dressed for warmups because Puglisi was a game-time decision), and those 2 still not cleared to play, We saw some names that we don't see too often. Wieland and Hepler both dressed for their 4th game of the season. (so did Craig, but for different reasons)

Clearly Oswego was #1 and you just left them off.![]()
does anyone have a clue as to how or why norwich moves from #7 to #3 after a rather convincing loss to plattsburgh?
As Jim said on facebook, I'll consider the streak over when he attends a win for a Men's team at the Staff.
just found out today that Chris Wieland has left the team.
