I support Make-A-Wish and that whole deal, but when I see these posters it's always $25 or $20 per individual seat. I would've attended the dinner if the cost were affordable for a poor college student. :D

Three of those losses are to Plattsburgh and I believe two of the Cards' losses are to Oswego?

The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team is looking to pick up where it left off the first semester.

Plattsburgh State hosts Curry College today at 4 p.m. in the opening round of the Cardinal Classic at Stafford Ice Arena. The first game has Neumann taking on New England College at 1 p.m.

The third-place game is set for Saturday at 4 p.m., and the championship contest is at 7 p.m.

The Cardinals, who are the defending tournament champions, got off to a slow start with a 3-4 record but won their last five games to end the semester. Plattsburgh State hasn't played since a 4-1 win at Skidmore on Dec. 7.

"The players have looked really dedicated since coming back and haven't missed a beat," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "We put in a pretty hard week of practice — a good week.

"But the players are anxious to get going. (Thursday's) practice was enough. We hope to pick it up again, and getting good goaltending is a key."

Leading scorers for the Cardinals include senior Dylan Clarke (7-8-15), senior Eric Satim (6-6-12), junior Kyle Kudroch (6-5-11) and sophomore Patrick Jobb (4-7-11).

Josh Leis (6-1, 2.74 gaa) has been the most effective goaltender for the Cardinals.

"Our focus is on defense — that's our main focus all the time," said Emery.

The Cardinals' roster is smaller than it was at the start of the season, but Plattsburgh State has added one newcomer — Ryan Craig, a junior forward and transfer from Niagara University.

Curry, which competes in the ECAC Northeast, last played on Dec. 4 in a 4-2 home win over Nichols and brings a 4-2-2 overall mark into the weekend.

Junior forward Christopher Atkinson (5-8-13) is the lone player with 10 or more points, with three others having eight.

Freshman Travis Owens is unbeaten in net for the Colonels with a 4-0-1 record and a 1.96 gaa. Sophomore Robert Dawson is 0-2-1, with a 4.48 gaa.

"Curry has had a high winning percentage over the years," said Emery. "We don't know a lot about them, but their high-end players are really good."

Neumann, which is in the ECAC West, is 7-3-1 overall and ranked No. 11 nationally in Division III. The Knights' most recent contest was a 5-3 home win over Brockport on Dec. 11. Neumann has won five of its last six games.

Freshman forward Michael Rey (7-8-15), sophomore forward Steve Gervais (5-7-12) and sophomore forward John Zalba (6-5-11) are the leading scorers. Junior Matt Tender (4-0-0, 1.96 gaa) and junior Ross MacKinnon (3-3-1, 3.32 gaa) have handled the goaltending duties.

The Knights won the Division III national title in 2008-09, recording a 5-4 overtime win over the Cardinals in the quarterfinals on the way to the crown.

"We have a pretty tough field in the tournament," said Emery. "That helps our strength of schedule and that's how we got into the NCAA Tournament last year."

New England College, out of the ECAC East, last played on Dec. 9 in a 5-2 setback to St. Anselm College and is the only team (2-4) with a losing record in the event.

Junior Niko Uola leads the Pilgrims in scoring with seven points (6-1-7) in six games. Senior Aaron Harvey (1-3, 3.59 GAA) has done the majority of the goaltending.

Just to throw this out there, if we do end up playing Neumann tomorrow: The Cardinals are 0-2-0 all-time against the knights, both games taking place at Stafford Arena, and both were decided in OT.

Good a time as any to get that mokey off our backs? I sure think so. :)


Anyway, best of luck to the Cardinals this afternoon. Due to scheduling (umm.... work) conflicts, I won't be able to make it today. I would be able if the game were at 7, but c'est la vie...

I'll be at both games tomorrow :)

Wow. Plattsburgh definitely was on their game tonight; but that second period was incredible. Six goals?? Nice work.

In other news, how 'bout those awesome scoreboards flaking out again? I cannot believe after all this time they STILL have issues with that. It's gone from being a pathetic nuisance to a running joke. Were they purchased at Bob's bargain bin or something? One would think they'd manage to either figure out what's wrong OR just replace those hunks of junk altogether. I'd be curious to know what the repair/maintenance bills are looking like for those things.

For the first period-and-a-half Friday afternoon, the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team couldn't have played much better.

By that time, the Cardinals had built up a 6-0 lead on the way to a 7-1 victory over Curry in the opening round of the Cardinal Classic at Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State (8-4) will play Neumann in tonight's 7 p.m. championship game.

Patrick Jobb scored three goals for the Cardinals, who were playing their first game of the second semester — as were the other three teams in the annual event.

Plattsburgh State held a 1-0 lead after one, despite having some great chances to score, and then broke it open with six second-period goals.

"The first period was probably our best of the three," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "We got good leadership, kept our feet moving and possessed the puck.

"We played real well for a period-and-a-half. But Curry played hard on defense in the first period. They played well in front of their net and didn't give us second shots."

The Cardinals outshot the Colonels (4-3-2), 16-7, in the opening period. But Jobb's goal at the 16:50 mark was all Plattsburgh State had to show for it.

Plattsburgh State, however, pumped in five goals in the first 10:53 of the second period to take a 6-0 advantage.

Jobb, Kyle Kudroch, Nick Jensen, Kyle VanDermale and Dylan Clarke, on the powerplay, all found the back of the net.

Eric Satim assisted on Clarke's goal, and that point marked the 100th for the senior at Plattsburgh State. :cool:

Curry's Jonathan Miller broke Josh Leis' shutout bid at 12:05 before Jobb finished off his three-goal performance at 18:07 as Plattsburgh State held an 18-3 shot advantage in the second.

Neither team scored in an uneventful third period.

"We didn't play that smart in the third," said Emery.

The Cardinals outshot the Colonels, 43-25, and Leis stopped 24 of the shots. Travis Owens and Robert Dawson combined for 36 saves in the Curry nets.

"It was a good game for us to start the second semester, but we're going to have our work cut out for us against Neumann," said Emery.

I cant remember Plattsburgh looking this fluid all first semester , passing was crisp , speed was unbelievable ..........except for Leis getting caught napping it was a flawless effort for the most part. Was Curry weaker than advertised ?

This ought to be a great game NEC has not been beaten by Curry in years there's defiantley a rivarly here. I couldn't make the trip whoever is there please keep us updated!! Sitting here watching college bowl games and have my livestats open on the laptop!! What a great New Years Day.

Neumann's performance must really have impressed Emery, he actually shook the entire teams hands!!! :eek: !!

Cards start year off with victory - {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 1/1/2011}

There wasn't a whole lot separating the Plattsburgh State and Neumann University men's hockey teams Saturday night.

Vick Schlueter's unassisted goal at 3:42 of the third period was the margin of difference as the hosts eked out a 2-1 victory in the championship game of the Cardinal Classic at the Stafford Ice Arena.

"Neumann came to play and we beat a heck of a team," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "It was a good game to watch and we can learn a lot from it.

"I'm happy we were able to find a way to win."

Schlueter broke a 1-all tie with a great individual effort early in the third period when he battled for the puck behind the net and then had it deflect to his stick when he skated into the middle.

"I was battling for the puck and trying to get it to my teammate, Kyle Taylor, who was yelling for it" said the junior forward. "I didn't want to turn it over.

"Then, the puck just dropped to me when I skated into the middle and it was bouncing. It was still on its side when I took the shot and I was just trying to get the puck on net. But, it went top shelf.

"Unreal — it was a great feeling."

The Cardinals (9-4-0), who won their sixth game in a row, were then able to hold on.

"I thought we played a great third period," said Emery. "We played smart, especially once we took the lead."

Plattsburgh State came out skating hard, but so did Neumann.

The Cardinals grabbed a 1-0 lead at 10:27 of the first period when Dylan Clarke took a centering pass in front and slipped the puck past Neumann goaltender Ross MacKinnon.

It stayed that way until 16:00 of the second when Steve Gervais' power-play goal pulled the Knights (7-4-2) even. Gervais slapped a shot past Josh Leis inside the near post.

"Neumann is big and quick, and they forced us into a lot of turnovers," said Emery. "Especially in the second period. They were winning a lot of the 50-50 battles.

"We were terrible getting the puck in deep. When we did get the puck in deep, we played well. But, we wanted to control the puck better than we did."

"Neumann took away what we were trying to do," said Schlueter. "They're a good team."

The nationally-ranked Knights finished with a 29-26 advantage in shots on goal and Leis, who was chosen as the tournament Most Outstanding Player, stopped 28 of 29 to preserve the win.

There were only five penalties called — three on the Cardinals and two on the Knights.

The all-tournament team consisted of Plattsburgh State's Schlueter and Patrick Jobb, Neumann's Steve Gervais and Scott Farrell, and Curry College's Ryan Warsofsky.

The Cardinals are back at it on Tuesday when they host Norwich University in non-conference play at the Stafford Ice Arena at 7 p.m.

"We knew this was going to be a big week for us," said Emery.
