Looking beyond the financial aid package, I believe Plattsburgh is not only losing the recruiting battle for foreign students, but also for American kids with Oswego - Americans who get no financial aid. For most hockey players and their families, they are accustomed to spending $10000's on their sport and if you're not getting a true Division I offer with scholarship, the room and board incentive is not a deal breaker. First and foremost any prospect wants to go where it matters and where they can win.
You're 20 years-old, a top prospect and - financial aid package aside - you make a recruiting trip to Oswego and Plattsburgh. In Oswego you meet with a down-to-earth likeable guy, with a certain charm, who treats you like an adult and makes you feel welcome and important. You come to a glistening new facility filled with a rabid student fan base. In Plattsburgh you meet with a stern coach and a guy who has a lot of expectations for you - someone with a reputation as no-nonsense hockey guy. A my way or the highway guy. The facility is nice - but not a palace and the fans, while just as enthusiastic, they are older and not necessarily your peers.
