Bolstered by four winter sports that advanced to their respective NCAA Championship, the Plattsburgh State Cardinals stand in 43rd place out of 273 scoring schools in the final winter standings of the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup awarded by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
There are 432 active NCAA Division III institutions that are eligible for this prestigious program that rates the best broad-based athletics departments in the nation based on finish in the NCAA championships.

Men's hockey was credited with a third-place finish and 83 points, followed by women's hockey (5th, 25), men's basketball (33rd, 25) and men'si ndoor track (55th, 16.5).
With 224.5 total points, Plattsburgh trails only fellow State University of New York Athletic schools Geneseo (305.75 for 27th) and Cortland (305.5 for 28th).
The Cardinals are ahead of such programs from Carnegie Mellon, Rochester, Oneonta, Norwich, Merchant Marine, Oswego, Bowdoin, Fredonia, Brockport, Hobart/William Smith, Rensselaer, Rochester Tech, Clarkson, St. John Fisher, Potsdam and Hamilton.

Currently, Plattsburgh is enjoying success with three spring sports: baseball is 15-1 and nationally ranked No. 26 in the coaches' Top 30 poll for the first time ever; men's lacrosse has equaled its best eight-game start with a 7-1 record; and softball went 9-5 on its Florida trip to prep for SUNYAC play. Men's and women's outdoor track have eight meets left on the schedule to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Six Plattsburgh teams so far have made NCAA appearances — one shy of the school record for the same academic year, set in back-to-back years during 2006 and 2007.
