Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Im a little confused about the events of this past weekend , is Williams now in the mix for a start or does Josh move back in for Potsdam. Im not saying I would lean either way but boy this turn of events is not timely .

I really hope that whoever is in nets the rest of the way, or game by game, that when its all said and done that the best effort is extended by the ENTIRE Team. If everyone is in high gear and playing with the goal of winning it all , we can certainly skate with any other team , if we get the breaks and a couple of bounces go our way ...who knows

Hoping against hope that Emery and Ducky get into a discussion about the state of the goalie tonight on BtheB. I agree that it's not the best time for this change but then again maybe its just what the team needs. Who knows.

In any event, I can't believe that Friday nights game is the end of the regular season. Seems like it just started!

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

All of this ragging on Josh is kind of amusing tho. He is 14-4-1, 2.45 gaa, .901 save%. He certainly isn't a Nic Sundberg or Bryan Hince, but he's no Pat O'Neil or Mollinaro either. There would be A LOT of DIII schools that would love to have a player with those stats on their team. Of his 20 games played his given up more than 3 goals in a game just 5 times and never more then 4 in a game. Take away those 4 games and he has about a 1.70GAA...Josh was a big reason Plattsburgh had their unbeaten streak. Has he let in some soft goals? Yes. Maybe sitting out Saturday will give him the push focus to make a run. Maybe Josh needed a break. He looked to be in good spirits Saturday.

Yes Satim and Clark will hurt, but Jobb, Cobb, Jensen, Craig, Kudo, Vic, and Dan are all back. I really like the progression out of Farnam and with a couple recruits already committed to think we will be cellar dwellers is absurd.

People tend to forget
A) the league is not the same SUNYAC of the 1990s. Every school, but 1 I believe, now recruits with FA.

B) Plattsburgh is still everyone's BIG game. No matter who it is, beating Plattsburgh is like winning a championship to most teams. Most of the teams that have beat Plattsburgh won on emotion, not talent.

I've said it a thousand times, if the talent wasn't there I'd be worried. This team can play and beat anyone. Yes, they can also lose to anyone too. But the playoffs are one game away. Do you really think anyone is looking forward to seeing the Red Birds step onto the ice?? People act like Plattsburgh is come ECAC NE team that can't get out of their own way.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Everybody has a bad day. I think that Leis gives you a better chance of winning a game than anybody else. I am sure there are plenty of teams who would find Leis to be an upgrade over who they have - probably more than half. He's not Brian Hince - but then Brian Hince was not always Brian Hince either. He's not Ryan Klingensmith either, but Klinger and Hince are both gone.

Heck, Bryan Hince wasn't Bryan Hince at the worst possible time for him not to be Bryan Hince :(

I will agree with parts of this. I still think Plattsburgh's long-term success is based on Josh Leis and how he plays. That said, he has been prone to giving up some soft, demoralizing goals. When Plattsburgh scores six or eight a game, that soft goal doesn't mean much. With Plattsburgh's current problems finding the back of the net, that soft goal is a much bigger deal. The Buffalo game on Friday was a perfect example. Plattsburgh has to spend the entire game trying to catch up and this team just doesn't seme built to do that. Plattsburgh's success on Saturday seemed to do as much with Plattsburgh keeping shots away from the crease as it did from great goaltending. So what's the answer? Go with the seemingly better goaltender who gives up the softie? Or go with the guy that the team seems to be more conscience of protecting defensively?

I'll defer to the guy that's been coaching the team for 20 years. My opinion (which isn't even worth $.02) is that Leis is the horse we should be riding long-term.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

The history of the "soft goal" is well documented in Hockey Lore. If the goalie is beaten by a redirect or break away that is one thing but NO LEVEL OF HOCKEY can survive random unexplained misplays by the goalie , it intensifies and magnifies in playoff hockey .

I also think it seems to happen to goalies who's teams control play in the offensive end more , It may have to do with "getting into the flow" ,as you rarely see a stand on their head goalie face 15-20 shots its usually the reaction to 30-40 plus shots which triggers the raw instincts and reactions that most of them have . If it becomes mental all bets are off.

I certainly think it will be a topic of discussion during Behind the Bench , but that is a topic Bob skates around and away from , historically.

Right, he's a Craig Neilson. :D

He's better than Neilson hands down across the board. You, and a few others rag on this kid every chance you guys can get. The second he let's in a bad goal you guys throw him under the bus. Let's break down Plattsburgh's losses this year and see exactly just how many he was solely responsible for as many claim him to be.

10/29 L 7-3 @ Geneseo: Pulled after the 1st period. 3 goals on 8 shots. Obviously a horrible game, but Williams didnt do any better. When you give up 7 goals there is blame to go all around.

11/6 L 5-3 @ Oswego: 4 goals on 41 shots. Given how good Oswego is, I don't think you can expect any more than that.

11/13 L 3-2 vs. Morrisville: Leis didn't play. Williams took the loss here. But 2 goals against Morrisville? Lot's of blame to go around.

11/19 L 6-2 vs. Buffalo State: Leis didn't play. In what I can only describe as a failed attempt to spark a struggling team Emery went with Foley between the pipes. Lot's of blame to go around here as well.

Insert a streak of Leis going 11-0-1 and giving up 23 goals in that span.

1/28 L 2-0 vs. Cortland: Even TacoRob can't pin this on Leis. You should be able to let Cortland score 2 goals and still be able to win the game, easily.

1/29 L 4-3 vs. Oswego: 4 goals on 19 shots. Not his best performance but Oswego has some great pure goalscorers, something Plattsburgh does not. Leis certainly shares part of the blame, as does the rest of the team. Of course, how can you really blame the team for losing to Oswego when everyone else has this year as well. They are a great team.

2/11 L 4-3 @ Buffalo State: This is about the only loss where you can pin a substantial amount of blame on Leis. 4 goals on 11 shots is ugly. That said, goalies have bad games. It happens to every single one of them, even the best.

So for all the complaining going on this year about Josh Leis, he's had two awful games and only one was a substantial factor in the loss.

I can't imagine what this board would have been like if all you Negative Nancy's were around when this game happened. What a Sieve he was!:rolleyes:

Settle down, Rennell. I wasn't ragging on him.

And I was at that RIT game. It was the 2001 Cardinal Classic Championship. I have the game program to prove it.

I am settled. I was just making a point that Leis isn't the problem and is much better than Craig Neilson.

Not a single bit of info or insight from Emery on BtheB about the status of who is in goal headed into last regular season game or tournament. My bet is he told Ducky to stay away from that line of questioning. My gut is he goes back to Leis; ride the horse that got you there.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

I agree it would seem that Josh is the starter and if he wanted to have Josh rest , clear his head and think about what it means to not get the nod then he accomplished that . The question is what if Josh starts and struggles against Potsdam ? I hope he doesnt ,but who knows , as we are constantly reminded these young men are "student athletes " not professionals and a frail psyche is not very predictable.

I 've been critical of Josh , but I hope that he stands tall , he doesnt have to single handedly win a game , he just needs to give the Cards a chance to win .

Matt in his assessment above has shown Josh Leis is most capable of doing that.

I just don't get this at all. Between the anti-Leis and the "sky is falling" Oswego fans I wonder what is going on in Upstate NY
