Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Unfortunately I didn't get to see the game. It sounds like it was a great game, up until the last couple of minutes. I believe the Platty fans that it was a stupid call, but the way I sum it up is that we shouldnt have been in that situation. Next time, lets close the game before it gets to that point. Good luck at Ridder, Cadets and hopefully Plattsburgh can improve on their good season next year.

Good reply Sticks to frustrating post # 378. I am glad it was a Cardinal fan that said it, because I was thinking the same thing: Stop whining about a bad call, dust your self off and next time score more goals. You guys truly sound like whiny b$tches. Nobody is entitled to anything even if your wearing red and white.

How did I show immaturity? The refs called a penalty on what was a legitimate penalty. I said the timing was unfortunate which it was. Do I think it should have been called given the flow of the game? Probably not, but you can't be upset that the referee called a penalty on a legitimate penalty. It's not like they called something that wasn't a legit penalty.

I'm glad I don't have to live by Birds approval to be satisfied in life. You take everything so offensive when it comes to Plattsburgh.

I wasn't gloating, I was simply providing my opinion on the subject, which is what message boards are for, am I right? I did not disrespect Plattsburgh in anyway. They played phenomenal and were the only team probably other than Manhattanville that absolutely took it to the Cadets for long stretches of play this year.

It was a tremendous game played between two great teams and I have nothing but respect for the student athletes leaving everything they had out on the ice.

The ref called a penalty. It's over. We can't change it.

I'd love to see what the Plattsburgh fan base's posts would look like had Plattsburgh won the game and Norwich was called for a penalty.

This will be my last post in this thread on this matter.

Complete opposite, and it wasn't a "good call"...it was questionable at best.....

Ive said it numerous times, I NEVER want to see a game decided (ultimately) on a reffs call, especially when the whistles were put away the rest of the time. If you're going to call a tick-tack call with 3 minutes to go in an OT, call them all day. Had Norwich not scored on the PP and scored 5 on 5 I wouldn't have any major issue. But the elitist don't want to man up and admit the game was given away, must be old age...

Anyone that would be happy or turn a blind eye as to what happend is not a true hockey fan....sorry. As much as I'd hate losing that way, I'd hate winning just the same.

Running out of arguements to make?? Bottom line, work on special teams. Score MORE on your OWN powerplay, and let the other team score LESS.

Note there are no arguments to make - both teams proved they are great teams - both teams were denied the ability to prove who was best. Your comments on the "bottom line" do prove you understand the fundamentals of the game though and I believe what Emery meant by "We still have to fine tune some things...” that said, as noted, "both teams were denied the ability to prove who was best".

That was a reference to PSChamps decision to attempt insults to people who disagree with him. Calls against teams happen all the time. Some are good, some are bad. Finding a way to minimize the impact of them is a big part of the game.

That was an attempt to “one-up” PSChamps decision to attempt insults to people who disagree with him. Poor calls against teams happen all the time. Some are good, some are bad. Finding a way to minimize the impact or capitialize on them is an unfortunate part of the game.

Fixed your post ;)

Cards fans, sorry to see your season end like this. I couldn't tell from the video if the action warranted a penalty. I think your Coach did a heckuva job bringing this team this far this season.

I admit I do tend to get my feathers ruffled when it comes to the Cards but I don't expect you or anyone to need my approval in life. We all are entitled to our opinion. So, you have given yours. I will respect that. Having said that, I feel that we should all look at the big picture and see what was at stake here, what they had a chance to do. I guess that is what bothers me most about these conversations. I do agree two great teams hit the ice and as my husband said before overtime, it's too bad someone has to lose. I congratulate Norwich on their win and wish them all the best in Minn.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

I don't believe there is any question about it, the call at that time in the game should not have been made but it was. So let's look at the winning goal closely. Three Cards covered Thomas and the other was in the neutral zone. Forkey gets the puck, circles and passes the puck to Anderson. At that time all four Cardinal skaters had surrounded Thomas leaving the front of the net uncovered. Not a good thing.
Several times over the years Norwich has been on the short end of calls, in particular I remember just a few years ago a certain Ref gave us such a bad night at Platty we *****ed and moaned about it, nothing happened, he still refs, and the game moves on. Thems are the breaks.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Remember - 80% of the time or so, a penalty call does not lead to a goal. When one happens, the defending team didn't execute the PK properly. Norwich lost earlier this season to Castleton in OT on a too many men call. It happens.

I wasn't so sure that there should have been a call that put NU down by 2 men at the end of the second either. Norwich didn't kill that penalty situation very well.

There were a number of calls that weren't made, too. All I know is that my view of the video said, something wasn't right about that situation. Was I surprised there was a call, yes. The fact is Platts didn't execute their PK very well all game long.

Would it have been a more satisfying end without the penalty - no doubt. It was a great game, but the end was the end.

The big picture...these gentlemen on both Norwich and Plattsburgh have two months to hit the books hard to graduate with a college education or step closer to that achievement!

We all had a shot or two with these officials. I feel the quality of officiating this year was poor at best.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

To be fair, there were many times in OT where Norwich deserved a good penalty. A Norwich player was tripped from behind on a break away to the net. Thats not just a penalty, thats a penalty shot - yet no call. There were other calls that probably should have gone Norwich's way especially early in the second.

However, especially after a 3d period which more resembled a UFC match in which Norwich's strategy was A. Clutch B. Grab. C. Survive it was a shameful call. Not only was there a literally wrestling match going on in front of the Norwich net, but one of the played (I forget who on whose team) had the opponent in a head lock behind Plattsburgh net. To a call a borderline penalty at center ice on the boards ... it was a travesty.

That being said ...

Anyone know why the students who were told to wait in the student line when the doors opened were told their was no student line at 10, and were told to wait in the back of the general admission? Not only was there no way to get student tickets, but we were lied to then screwed by lord Bruce. Completely unacceptable.

It's a real surprise here - Norwich fans don't have a problem with that call and Plattsburgh fans do.

Are you seriously trying to claim that Norwich's chance to score a goal in the two minutes they have a man advantage isn't significantly higher than when both sides are skating equally? Remember - Norwich did not score the entire game when the teams had an equal number of players on the ice. That penalty greatly enhanced their chances to score that goal. Claims to the contrary just are insulting to our intelligence.

Derek, I know you posted that was a penalty in overtime, but I am just as adamant that was not a penalty, but a good check of a player that was in possession of the puck (or had just gotten rid of it. It would not have been a good call at 10:00 of the first period....it's probably the worst call I've ever seen with 5:00 left in an overtime period.

This is not a slight to Norwich or their team - they didn't do anything wrong, Jones did. They converted the chance they were given. The fact that they had it ruined an extremely good game that was looking to become a classic.

Well not sure about this ref Jones, but at least it wasnt St Louis..could not see the penalty on the web, but it seems that it shouldnt have been called as per the flow of the game..that said, the birds did have a chance to kill the penalty but didnt, that was their downfall all night from what the scoresheet says....it does blow for all involved, players fans coaches etc and Im sure Jones as well as this was going into the " classic " catagory for the right reasons...Im sure the birds will be re-loading for next yr, and dont look forward to playing them as they will have a REAL BAD taste in their mouth all season....

I'm not sure whether this was covered elsewhere, but this thread is getting bumped plenty, so I might as well post it here: was there a USCHO correspondent at the game who will provide an article with additional coach/op-ed insight? I consider myself too biased to pretend I can get into this rationally, and I can't really glean much from most of the neutral posters here, as a) they simply weren't there, and b) I don't think I'm overreaching to say that people naturally tend to be skeptical of the loser in cases like these. It'd just be nice to get some fresh, impartial insight into the whole thing.

USCHO did not have a correspondent at the game.

The Times Argus' Tom Herzig was at the game. I haven't had a chance to read the story yet tho.

Did the Burlington Free Press get quotes from both coaches?

Congratulations to both teams on a tremendous season. Both teams have a lot to be proud of this year. I was fortunate enough to get a standing room only ticket and it was well worth a little sore foot the next day from all the standing. I enjoy all levels of hockey and have had the chance to see many games watching my son grow up and play. In reading all these posts about the loss I am amazed to hear that those of you who were not even at the game have the ability to pass judgment on something you didn’t even see with your own 2 eyes. With that said I was present and do understand the frustration of loosing and not moving on. I would have to agree with PrezdeJohnson09 in that it was a legitimate penalty that denied the Cadet player Thomas the opportunity to touch the puck and with his speed possibly even a breakaway. What zone of the ice it happened in is irrelevant. Yeah I will agree that the officials set the standard that appeared as if they were going to let the players decide the outcome by letting those little infractions go that don’t deny possible-scoring opportunities. However a penalty is still a penalty and I would have to imagine that if it were a Plattsburgh player that was denied the same opportunity some of you folks would be on here complaining about that as well. Hockey is a fast game and players and officials need to make split decisions out there and sometimes what us fans see from our seats is not what coaches, players and officials see. I have watched many Clarkson and St Lawrence games in my time and have seen all kinds of good and bad calls. More bad ones then I could even begin to tell you. But if you truly understand the game and do not have the emotional connection with either team it is much easier to have a neutral viewpoint on a game. It was a great game! Both teams had their chances to win the game in regulation but could not. So stop being angry at what happened and use some of that anger to hug your kids or grandkids. Its just a game…..
