Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Hey, I'm not going to stop cheering for them if they get in. I'm bitterly disappointed in a team that I said all year was good enough to win the whole thing collapsed down the stretch (mostly at home) to seemingly have no chance to even get in. I still think no one in the tournament wants to see Cadieux get a chance to play.
I get it. The disappointment reaches all of us. I just am trying to stay positive for the team. Talked to some of the guys last night and the are still hoping.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

I've already braced myself for the snub.....but hopefully, those in charge will judge all criteria equal for ALL teams. The Oswego-Plattsburgh argument is simple. The Lakers feel that they walked in our barn, took two games and that in and of itself should trump any advantages that Plattsburgh had (and still have) in criteria...Plattsburgh feels that a 5 loss season, the WHOLE season, always is good enough for an at-large bid.

It seems as though the new metric of L25 must be heavily weighted. Interestingly enough, I think both Plattsburgh and Oswego would be 4-3 in that department. If we're going to put a HUGE emphasis on Oswego's two wins at Plattsburgh then I hope they do the same with Plattsburgh's win at Norwich earlier this season. In my opinion, the order that I would weight things would be: Winning Pct., H2H, SOS, RNK, COP & last 25%. But my opinion doesn't count.

It also bothers me a bit the arrogance of some of the Norwich posters who take for granted they are in this tournament win or lose. I don't think they had such a great year, were beaten by Plattsburgh, lost to some soft teams and were beyond fortunate to win their conference regular season. Yet it seems like a done deal they are in this thing. If the data does not support it, then WHY? If they win tonight, fine and good luck. However if they lose, put Plattsburgh up against Norwich and tell me what you come up with.

and ya gotta be IN IT to win it...we will see soon..when do they come out with the final NCAA teams????
So right . Pleasssse, let's not list Pburgh in that list. That is the kiss of death for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm superstitious! :)

What I come up with is the likelyhood that (should the Cadets lose to Babson) the committee would not promote a team to the tourney with: 1) a 4-3 record in their last 7 games, 2) a .357 record against other ranked teams, and 3) a season-long SOS that's barely 50%, on the basis of one H2H win, a slightly stronger WIN, and a better COP. But that just my arrogance speaking.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Exactly the response I expected....minimizing the Winning Percentage AND the H2H, but glorifying the all-important (and brand new) Last 25% and the extremely subjective record vs. ranked. Face it, Winning Percentage & H2H trump any 2 criteria you want to come up with...and you know it.

P.S. It's a good thing they don't even count the 2-1-1 record against those powerhouse DII schools (St. Anselms, St. Mikes). Also, am I seeing that Norwich has only played 3 games vs. ranked teams? Two 1-0 wins against Babson and a loss to Plattsburgh? Not sure I'd be bragging about that too much. Don't even get me started on the inflated SOS. I spent an hour comparing Plattsburgh & Norwich schedules and I'll post my findings if Norwich loses.

If I weren't a Norwich supporter, I would be rooting for them anyway, if only to have this cease until next year. But than again someone has to start the "we got screwed" thread. :D

Ok, I think it's time to look at a Geneseo vs. Plattsburgh comparison (assuming Oswego holds their 5-1 lead):

Winning Pct. - Plattsburgh
SOS - Plattsburgh
H2H - Even
COP - Geneseo
RNK - Geneseo
L25 - Geneseo

Hey, you never know...we've got the two most important ones !

How do you have Platty getting the point for win%? If Genny loses, they would be 21-6 (.778). Platty sits dormant at 19-5-2 (.769). ???

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

I didn't work through the math... I guess 19-5-2 is essentially 20-6. Point to Geneseo.

That blown Murphy call in Buff State is really coming back to bite Plattsburgh...costs 1st place, probably Championship hosting and probably a shot at the NCAA's....too many chances since then, but still sad...either way, great game going on in Genny! Never knew this is how it feels watching a championship game with out your team in it lol

That is surely the fork and fat lady now!?

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Cards are last of four teams looking for the two last Pool C spots. I'd say Geneseo has one spot. Adrian, Norwich, Trinity & Plattsburgh. You never know. The committee isn't going to like the weak schedules of Trinity & Adrian (no ranked games for Trinity). At least we still have a shot seeing how we match up very well vs. Norwich. Keep it lit !!!

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

It has been a very interesting season of hope and high expectation in Cardinal Country. I guess the next addition of Cards should be prepared to win a game 7-6 (based on last nights Championship). Sorry coach but we need to fill the net a little more often ,that way an occasional defensive lapse or poor call by an official doesn't have as much impact.

But who am I to say I don't have one win as a coach ............. Here's to holding out a little hope we can still play on this year.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Still holding out hope for a Pool C, but I do realize that the chances are incredibly slim, so here are my thoughts on this season:

I find it amusing that the struggles for this team (ie the losses) seemed to start in the second semester, which is when we got Nick Jensen, arguably the most talented player on the team, back from injury. Did his re-entry into the lineup affect the team's chemistry, especially on the blue line? Only the players on the team could possibly know. I'm certainly not saying that Kensen shouldn't have played, but maybe there was a way to better ease him back intot he lineup so he didn't suddenly change the atmosphere? But who am I to comment? I have no idea what went on in the locker room or on the practice ice.

I would want to call Jensen the most significant injury of the season, but the evidence shows that the team was getting results without him. No, I'd say the 2 most significant injuries this season for the Cardinals were the 2 that lost us key freshmen down the stretch. Hermans, which completely shut down the Powerplay, and Mason, which cost us an exceptionally talented 2-way forward. Who knows how those Oswego games might have gone of we'd had Hermans instead of Kaye, or mason instead of Farnan or Popp? Who knows...

A key part of the elevated expectations going into this season was last year's performance by the Freshmen. I thought the sophomore defensemen upheld their end of the bargain for the most part, although Grace and Puglisi were always going to be hard to replace. For the forwards, Fox and Gorman kept pace with last season, and Radisa had an unexpectedly fantastic sophomore year, but Emmerling and Baleshta had markedly mediocre production compared to their star performances in their freshman year. Here's hoping that they find that majic again in their junior season!

All in all, 19-5-2 is not a bad season by any means. It just seems that way because it appeared, going into the season, that we would have the offensive output to get things done, and the goaltending necessary to win it all. Chewy showed that he was still among the best goaltender's in DIII, but low-scoring games lead to pressure on the defense, which caused costly defensive turnovers and other errors, and that cost us some key games. That's a tough way to fall short of your goals, for sure.
