Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 09-10
"The question ought to be, "Are we going to be able to get tickets for tonight's game?" Instead, the seats are empty. They don't even print tickets to some games at Ronald B. Stafford Arena. Admission is free — which is one of the better decisions the college has made, incidentally.
The no-cost gate, you would think, would be yet another reason for the building to be jam-packed night in and night out."
I went to both Oswego games this past week. I was a first time visitor. Friday was breast cancer awareness and senior night. Admission was free, however donations were encouraged. I put in a few bucks. About between 250-300 people showed up. It was a very comfortable arena to watch the girls play. Even though the score came in at 7-1 Plattsburgh, it was nevertheless, energetic entertaining and enjoyable. By contrast, the Saturday game was a down to the wire 3-2 Plattsburgh victory. The Oswego goalie earned the number one star ranking. What a show she put on. She must have had 60 saves. What a shame to have only a hundred or so people show up. The atmosphere was lifeless and the cheering was sporadically enthusiastic. I wonder if the $8 admission fee had anything to do with it. I know I wasn’t a happy camper. That charge put a damper on my afternoon. Never again, Thank You Oswego. I wonder what other university’s charge? I’ve been to Syracuse and Cortland games where admission is free and I know that Syracuse would charge for the oxygen if they could. I think they see the benefit of building fan interest in hopes of larger crowds and national interest. I think the Plattsburgh area folks may be spoiled by the enormous success of their men’s team. I think they’re missing a real treat by not attending the woman’s games. A fun team to watch and free. Wow. All the best to them.
