PHF Purchased, Teams to Be Folded Into New PWHPA League

Aerin Frankel may end up being the first PWHL signee as reports are she is deep into negotiations with Boston, possibly a 3 year deal.

Ottawa has used all 3 of their free agency slots, signing forwards Emily Clark (Wisconsin '19) and Brianne Jenner (Cornell '15) and goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer (Harvard '16) to 3 year deals.

What are your thoughts on them not disclosing salaries?

edit: anyone want to educate me on how it works in the nhl? Is it truly public data or does it just get disclosed all the time so it’s like it is? I’m aware of sites like capfriendly.

As long as the players know what each other are making and can use it in negotiations I'm not concerned if the public knows...but maybe my attitude towards is it misguided and there are factors I'm not considering as to why it should be akin to an open record

As for free agency news: the latest rumor is that Lee Stecklein (Minnesota '17) and Kendall Coyne Schofield (Northeastern '16 G '17) are going to be 2 of Minnesota's 3 free agents with Kelly Pannek (Minnesota '18) possibly the 3rd. Minnesota also gets first pick in the draft, but they don't get their second pick until the end of round 2.

There is also talk that in addition to Frankel, Boston is going to sign Hilary Knight (Wisconsin '12) and Megan Keller (Boston College '19) in free agency.

Seems to me that the salaries should be public information if the players really care about supporting one another. Keeping things private seems to once again only be protecting the national team players and the girls that know each other super well. I don't imagine the girls coming out of college or former PHF players trying to get a deal are going to know what these other players have signed for. So their negotiations will certainly be hurt if they can't get full information. I agree with you that if there is a way for ALL players to find out what other players signed for, that is all that matters. But I haven't seen any evidence of that yet.

Unfortunately, they are working for a monopoly. They likely are complying with the desires of the ownership group, who have already shown themselves to understand the value of asymmetrical information.

Montreal: Marie-Philip Poulin (BU '15), Laura Stacey (Dartmouth '16) and Ann-Renee Desbiens (Wisconsin '17).

Toronto: Sarah Nurse (Wisconsin '17), Renata Fast (Clarkson '16) and Blayre Turnbull (Wisconsin '15)

New York: Abby Roque (Wisconsin '20) and Alex Carpenter (Boston College '16)

I think NY has one free agent slot left, otherwise we have our Top 18. I believe Roque is the youngest of the free agents...

Every team that signs one of their 3 free agents has to pay them 80k/year for a 3 year contract. There will also be another 3, likely their 3 first picks that also get 80k for 3 years.

In the introductory press conference for PWHL Ottawa, Emerance Maschmeyer noted that her wife, former Olympic Gold Medalist goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Providence '12), will be retiring and does not plan to sign with a PWHL club.

As someone Lacasse's age I feel ancient seeing her just up and retire.

Hailey Salvian of The Athletic says terms aren't being disclosed "per the PWHL Players' Association". So either the players want it or not only did the owners demand it they demanded the players take the bullet when asked about salary info, which I can't see them bothering to do that. Then again they tweeted out a photo of Maschmeyer signing an obviously blank piece of paper as her "signing photo" so these people might not be dealing from a full deck...

Liz Knox from the PWHLPA has commented on the disclosure issue: they are internally keeping the records. The reasoning she stated is that the players want the players who actually signed the contracts to vote if salaries should be public, so they will revisit the issues after the rosters are set. Players looking to get a contract done can request the info to use during negotiations.

Love the conversation!

I hope a non American signs for the last available free agency spot in NY/Connecticut .

I’m not local to any team but so far Ottawa and New York/Connecticut are my fave.

Latest rumor is that Savannah Harmon has an offer for the last FA slot (with NY) but she may not be the only one they're talking to

And the final free agent is not Harmon but Canadian defender Micah Zandee-Hart (Cornell '20) who signs with NY. Zandee-Hart is the only signee of the 18 free agents who is signing with a club outside her home country.

Now all eyes turn to Natalie Darwitz as Minnesota will have the first pick in the player draft...
