Penn State's Impact on Women's Hockey

Re: Penn State's Impact on Women's Hockey

When thinking about it from a business standpoint, why would you add a costly program with no potential for income for 25 student-athletes, in an athletic department that is forced to be self-sufficient even if it wasn't self-sufficient, then it would be irresponsible to spend money when the state is suffering finanically. This is why U-M added water polo, less money spent per athlete. If MSU is forced to add a women's sport it will be water polo, unfortunately.
Why would a program add it? The most common reason is that they love hockey. Sure there are financial obstacles, but if a Bemidji State can do it, and build a new arena to boot, then it is possible with far more limited financial resources than Michigan and Michigan State have at their disposal. Are they obligated to have a women's hockey programs? Of course not. And if they don't want one, they'll always be able to come up with a whole litany of reasons why it is impossible. But then in the sake of honesty, Detroit should quit with this silly "Hockey Town" charade. The true Hockey Town is Warroad, where people actually care about hockey. Detroit is apparently more of a water polo town.

Lots of good hockey in the Detroit area. Several AAA organizations that have had quality teams for many years, male and female. The Red Wings are probably the most successful organization in the NHL the past 15 years or so. Hockey town, maybe, all in an area that has been broke for years. :)

That might be the most simplified out of touch comment ever...if they love hockey? really? and comparing it to Bemidji. Bemidji athletics is funded by the school and has "activity fees" and NO OTHER sports that are worthwhile. MSU athletics are self-funded, they get $0 from the school to operate. Therefore, MSU could care less about women's hockey, they care about Football and Football and Football, and then Men's basketball, these sports pay the bills. Men's hockey (which they love) only breaks even/makes a small profit.

As I said before, I love women's hockey and if I had a stockpile of money, I would donate enough to get MSU to start a women's program...much like Penn St. This love hockey, hockeytown, Bemidji can do it, etc is like staring into the blue sky and saying I love rainbows...College sports is a business, period.

PS. Money is a reasonable excuse, especially in Michigan right now and E. Lansing is not part Detroit, it is 90 miles away from "hockeytown".

That doesn't really seem to hold true for those that are currently supporting NCAA ice hockey for the women. I don't think any women's hockey program turns a profit. That would give me the impression there are reasons beyond profitability and a pure business / profit motivation present within those universities athletic depts. that do support a women's program.

Money is a reasonable excuse if you're really not interested in having women's ice hockey as a varsity sport. Many institutions among those that currently participate could use it as a reason to not have a varsity women's hockey program, with many of those states and their universities also having serious budget problems. Lucky for us fans some are more determined to support a program and find ways to do it. I have a little difficulty buying that the situation is somehow unique and different, or especially more problematic in Michigan than it is for all those currently offering the sport at the varsity level.

I guess the question is, would Michigan and Michigan State and their athletic departments really have any interest if they could find a way to support the sport financially? Don't really know the answer but it does seem there are other factors in play besides financial obstacles...to an outsider. You'd obviously need some strong proponents at the university, in the athletic dept. and among alumni. Perhaps that's missing in Michigan?

I would say the best question to determine whether or not whky is coming to Michigan is, "Are there men's non-revenue sports that MSU and UM would really like to add?"

Very good point. Why is Penn State doing it? This might shed more light on the subject. ;)

IIRC, a very generous private donation funding the building of a new rink. ($89 Mil rings a bell)

Re: Penn State's Impact on Women's Hockey

Make sure PSU men's hockey fail to lure Mark Johnson, or that will certainly have a big impact in women's hockey.

Exactly. Like BU, I think that if a new rink were built on campus at either of the Michigan schools, there would be a good chance of women's hockey being added and residing in the old building.

There is a ton of talent that comes out of Michigan in both mens and womens hockey. The problem is NOT that there is no interest in womens hockey! It is because the people in control are a bunch of male chauvenist!! That is very sad! Unfortunately, Michigan at the AAA and college level on the womens side is in shambles! And it needs a ton of help! Exception Adrian.

It's not just the men that are screwing up women's hockey in Michigan. Several women do as well. It is a VERY closed mind state when it comes to women's hockey.

Couldn't agree more! Maybe they should actually pay someone to come in from out of state to turn things around? Or Canada!

Okay...so I'm really hoping Red's team gets their rear ends handed to them tonight...just because. ;)

Re: Penn State's Impact on Women's Hockey

USHR Thurs. 4/21/11

Notes
Here are a couple things to keep a watch on:

With the Big 10 Hockey League a fait accompli, there has been a lot of talk about Miami and Notre Dame possibly joining Hockey East.

There has also been talk about the University of Indiana possibly adding a varsity hockey program.

With the college coaches’ convention running next week, there should be no lack of news – or at least lively discussion and speculation – coming out of Naples. We’ll let you know what we hear.

I dont see Miami or Notre Dame going east. It would be too much of a travel increase to the rest of the teams. I would expect them to go to the WCHA first...

If Indiana starts NCAA Hockey I hope they got some money coming in the way Penn State did.. The IU club teams play at the Frank Southern Center Ice Arena which is a step down from the 2 rink complex where Lindenwood will start its program.. Not exactly a recruiting tool for a new program at a Big Ten institution.

Coaches Convention should bring out some great developments this year. Rumors Ive heard is Penn State will conduct its final interviews there!

Re: Penn State's Impact on Women's Hockey

Wonder ...of the all the varsity programs at Penn State.. how many coaches over the years have been from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada?
