I guess I didn't get that far. I read the byline "HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Gov. Tom Corbett said Tuesday he plans to sue the NCAA in federal court over stiff sanctions imposed against Penn State University in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal." and then a few paragraphs in.

If that's all they are suing for, fine. But if they are looking for a reduction in penalties or anything like that, which is what it initially sounded like, then I'm opposed.

Just to be clear, it's the state that is suing, not Penn State. And I'm hearing the suit might include the sanctions as well as the fine.

i thought it was because the state wants the money that they are paying the ncaa to be spend IN pa. not sure what the sanctions part then will be or how that comes into play.

The first sentence is believed to be the root of the suit. I have seen some "in the know" surmise that Corbett could go after the sanctions as well, but longtime PSU football historian Lou Prato (who IS in the know) posted this on Facebook:

Regarding the supposed PA lawsuit against the NCAA. This could be strictly a law suit on the $60 million penalty in an attempt to get all the money for Pennsylvania groups. I doubt Corbett would try to go after the other sanctions because that would probably bring is buddy Louie Freeh and his report into the the court room, and that would not be good for our "esteemed" governor.

Perhaps it should be allocated the same as the football scholarship money is allocated. If it is all given to PA. players (not betting on that.....) then I am good with all the fine money staying in PA. If not, then it seems a bit disingenuous for the Governor to claim that PA money should stay in PA.

Wow - seven hours since the Gov. Corbett presser and no comments?? :rolleyes:

As I suspected, the suit seeks to reverse some of the sanctions and the fine.

Dave Jones of the Patriot News thinks there's another angle to the suit:

The heart of the suit isn't that Penn State doesn't deserve punishment but that the NCAA was unworthy of levying same.

And the purpose of the suit I don't believe is to win the case. That would take years and likely last beyond the life of the sanctions themselves. Corbett's aim I believe is to scare the NCAA into coming to the table to negotiate a lessening of the sanctions. Any case backed by one of the largest and richest states in the nation with unlimited means to extend it holds the threat of carving open the NCAA. It could expose the NCAA's methodology and possibly weaken it and its president Mark Emmert and take up countless man hours.


I've been told by high-level sources that the goal is to reduce the postseason ban from the remaining three years down to one and to eliminate or greatly reduce all scholarship limitations. The $60 million payout would remain but an effort would be made to keep the money in-state to benefit child-abuse victims in Pennsylvania. And the NCAA's expunging of PSU football wins back through 1998 would remain and not be a bargaining point at all.

Makes me wonder if the NCAA has a way to involuntarily remove PSU from the organization. That said, I'm not sure that the State of Pennsylvania has standing to sue

Say what you want about the NCAA, but for college athletics to continue to exist in any organized way the NCAA has to continue to exist. You remove all recruiting and compensation restrictions, basketball and football become absolutely lawless overnight (and that's a Pandora's Box that no one wants open)

I call BS on your claim of "football over academics" at Penn State. :mad:

The Penn State football team produced another outstanding academic performance during the Fall 2012 semester, with nearly 50 squad members earning at least a 3.0 grade-point average, including a record number on the Dean's List.

Among the 47 Nittany Lions posting a 3.0 GPA or higher, a program record 20 earned Dean's List recognition by earning a 3.5 GPA or higher this past semester. The previous mark was 19 Dean's List honorees during the 2008 Fall semester.

Redshirt junior guard John Urschel (Williamsville, N.Y.) posted a perfect 4.0 GPA for the seventh consecutive semester last fall. A graduate student, Urschel brought a 4.0 cumulative GPA into the spring semester and is on schedule to earn a master's degree in math in May. A 2012 first-team All-Big Ten selection, Urschel was a first-team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American® last fall.
