Penn State 2012-2013: Welcome to D1

Re: Penn State 2012-2013: Welcome to D1

Forget about UNO's first season, it's worth noting that UNO has NEVER played an ACHA team and they have NEVER played a Division III team, either.

I don't know about ACHA, but UNO HAS played a D-III team and lost to it at home two nights in a row, December 12 and 13, 1998. I was there broadcasting the games:

Mike Kemp called the loss on Sat. Dec. 12 the "most embarrassing loss in the history of the program."

On Sunday night, RIT was down 3-2 with 4 minutes to play and scored 2 goals in 15 seconds and added an empty-netter. Kemp was asked how that game rated given his comments the night before and that reporter was escorted out of the press conference by security.

My bad, Ed.

I totally forgot that RIT was not D-1 back then and their program is really the last to go D-1, not UNO. Worse, I went through my old ticket stubs and I actually attended the December 12th game myself, although I don't have any real specific recollections of it. I DO remember that this happened in the middle of a horrific streak for UNO upon opening that season. After those RIT losses, UNO was 2-14-0 and lost the next 4 games after the RIT games, even, and limped to 11-24-0, the worst season in school history and the only one without even a single tie.

Thanks for correcting me. I double checked our all time opponent record log and I think that is the only error I made in my original contention, though.

I have met and chatted with Coach Kemp on a couple of occasions and he has never struck me as that thin skinned, though. That story, which I have never heard, is a little surprising.

I don't know that Coach Kemp was thin skinned necessarily in that press conference. His response to the reporter was something like, "I'm not going to dignify that with an answer." Moments later, the reporter was approached by security and told to leave.

It was a great, historic weekend for Penn State. Despite pumping 63 shots at AIC goalie Ben Meisner in Friday's season opener, the Nittany Lions dropped a tough 3-2 decision in overtime. The game winner scored with just 31 seconds left in OT.

On Saturday night, the Lions turned the table on AIC, with a 4-3 overtime victory in front of more than 5000 fans at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Park in Wilkes Barre. Freshman David Glen secured Penn State's first NCAA victory with a wrister just 38 seconds into the extra frame.

I was surprised how small the new rink is. Can't be much of a revnue generator.

Congrats on the win, I'm sure it was a fun series for you guys. I have a feeling next weekend won't be as fun ;)

At least Saturday night, but ya never know! :) Not sure many thought RIT would win at Yost or NMU would sweep the Badgers. That's why they play the game.

Welcome to Div 1 hockey and congrats on your historic first win last night :)

Re: Penn State 2012-2013: Welcome to D1

Congratulations on the opening weekend as a division 1 NCAA hockey program, and even more so on the first win for the program.

Re: Penn State 2012-2013: Welcome to D1

True, but comparing the RIT-Mich matchup to RIT-PSU isn't fair in that regards. RIT has had a lot of big game experience and routinely wins against ranked teams. PSU just split a series (both in OT) with the worst NCAA D1 team. Granted it looks like the got a lot of shots away, I don't think things bode well for the Nittany Lions next weekend.

Welcome to D1. I'll see you in a few weeks in Rochester. If any Penn State fans are looking for good places to eat/drink while in town I'd be happy to divulge.
In town withRMU next week, please recomend an eatery.
