PC Police: A New Low

Re: PC Police: A New Low

Edit: it did take me some effort to discontinue using that term as disparaging. All you have to do is find a substitute word that does not insult anyone :D

What??? we are searching for a term to use when we want to insult someone, yet we want no one else to be offended by the insult except the one person at whom the insult was directed???

Actually, that recalls some of the greatest individualized insults in history....

The term "retarded" strikes a nerve in someone who loves someone who is retarded, just as racial slur strikes a nerve of someone of that same race being slurred. Our daughter has no idea what the term means and isn't bothered by it. But for my wife and I, it strikes a nerve. We just want our daughter to be treated like a normal person, and not looked down upon or treated differently, just as a minority person wants to be treated like a majority person.

Re: PC Police: A New Low

The Chronicle of Higher Education has been grovelling for the past few days. They published a blog post that suggested that some topics for PhD dissertations in "black studies" were less than academically rigorous, that they were more about scoring political points and less about useful scholarship. Well, you can imagine the sh^tstorm that followed; and of course they caved and fired the author of the blog post (conveniently ignoring all of those who said worse things than she did in their responses).

Her response is published here.

Re: PC Police: A New Low

"Black studies" is a tendentious academic scam. As is, I suspect, "diversity studies." Most of us probably don't remember Sam Hayakawa, who as president of San Francisco State decades ago, had the question of a "black studies" major studied. He concluded that there was not enough material, of sufficient academic weight, to warrant a major. He did authorize a minor.

This set off the customary "days of rage," and led to one of the most sublime moments, ever. Some "black studies" advocates had set up a flatbed sound truck from which they were spewing the usual complaints about "racism." Hayakawa, hopped up on the truck and began to engage the young man with the mic. At one point, the guy said Hayakawa didn't know the meaning of racism because the "government" had never oppressed him. Hayakawa replied that the government had interned him and his family in a concentration camp and stolen their worldly possessions because of their race. And he wondered if that counted. It was that performance and many others, that led Sam to the Senate.

Re: PC Police: A New Low

Majors like Black Studies are the reason so many kids graduate from college and realize that they wasted truckloads of money on a degree that is completely useless and end up working at Walgreens.

Re: PC Police: A New Low

Apparently Scotland Yard has banned the term "blacklisted" as being offensive. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepag...d-blacklist-over-fears-that-it-is-racist.html

Also "whitelist".

Remember a few years ago when CNN, at Ted Turner's insistence, tried to ban the use of the word "foreign" in its reportage and replace it with the word "international?" The laughter was "international" on that one. Just change the title of every Foreign Secretary or Foreign Minister on the planet. Hubris. PC nonsense. I think Ted's taken his flagon and moved on to other matters.

Didn't Nat X have a bit about black holes, ice, ball (the white ball hits the black one), balled...? Funny bit/rant whoever did it.

Nat X had many like that (Chris Rock, IIRC). And I believe it was the Eddie Murphy movie "Boomerang" that had the bit about pool being racist, since it was the white ball trying to knock the black ball off the table. (decent movie, btw).

Re: PC Police: A New Low

You fail at the interwebs, but I know of which clip you post of. F*ing retard.

Edit: it shows just text in your post, but shows up as a link in the quote. Odd.

I got in trouble once for saying "prig" on the air and some morons thought I said something else. And don't you dare utter a word (like "niggardly," for instance) which other morons in their ignorance, might construe as racist.
"Well, it SOUNDS bad." Right.

I like using the word "niggardly" because it exposes the stupid people.
