Re: PC Hockey.....continues to grow
Nice story in the Projo this morning talking about the polls and the 2 key freshmen in particular.
As for a few other thoughts.
I would say there is a lot of potential upside to our preseason ranking, closer to what a lot of other people on the Hockey east thread were saying, but better to be underrated than overrated like in 2001-02 where coming off our last decent year we nose dived.
Interesting that they pick 4 preseason forwards but no mention of Tim Schaller. Hand in Hand with us outperforming the expectations the media and coaches have is that Schaller has the kind of season that puts him in that company and garners him Player of the Year consideration. He missed basically a third of the season so it is possible he flew a bit under the radar. However when you figure overall games of the returning forwards only Diamond had a higher goal per game average. Met that average and he's a 20+ goal guy for the year, improve it and he goes above 25 in a full season. Also figure the team in general will score more goals so he might be able to significantly up his assists total.
In the article Leaman mentioned still being unsure if he was going to play Jankowski at center or move him to wing. Still the encouraging word is the major steps he has shown in skill sessions and from the Calgary camp. I think a successful season for him would be to match Berland's freshman season of 10-17-27. No freshman has done that at PC since (though Mauerman was just 2 assists off) and none had done it since the freshman class of Rask, Disalvatore and Fregoe.
The injury to Parisi is unfortunate but it does give Mark Adams a chance to show he wants a job as this does give him an opening to prove himself. In the article Leaman talks indirectly about the work his junior defensemen have done to be ready specifically Hart and Shamanski. However if Adams is healthy and he wants a job he has the experience, size and now the maturity to step up and be a major player.
Two freshman will most likely step into Rob Maloney's and David Brown's jobs. They are replacing 4 goals and 7 assists. While none of the other freshman are on par with Jankowski they are more developed and since Maloney was a true freshman not a whole younger than him last season. I think this is where a big upgrade is going to come. Acciari in particular should be interesting once he get his skating legs back.
Clearly there is a lot of pressure on Jon Gillies. Leaman noted there is no experience in net yet much is expected of Gillies. Still there is enough veteran players on the ice and most of the freshman are not kids. It is too bad LaPlante left. Would have been nice to have pushed Gillies a bit. It worked for Schaefer to have either Ballard or Goepfert pushing him.
I would say in general most of our recruiting for next year is done. Most likely we will need a walk on goalie to be third string to replace Stein. Ellis will come in if Gillies goes after a year, wait a year if he does not. Defense is in place with Reed and Florentino, on paper we still will have 9 defensemen. Up front the plan looks like Rufo now but with Jankowski in now and with LaPlante's money now open I would venture we want one more scholarship player, I think it would really be a little much to expect either of the last 2 recruits to be that guy. They look like developmentally they would best be served coming in '14
Still in a way part of our recruiting class for next year is on campus now. Really with the depth Leaman has built already Kevin Rooney, Will Goss and Ori Abramson are learning the system with an eye to being key elements in future years.
