PC Friars: 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: PC Friars: 2010-2011 Season Thread

Hey all want to come out and catch the big Friday night game of PC at BC - so where is the BC rink it says Chestnut Hill? Is that on campus and if so does anyone have an address for mapquest. Last what would you allow as drive time from Logan out to the rink? Thanks for all the help to a midwest guy who gets easily lost in Boston!!

The rink is indeed on the BC campus near Chestnut Hill (There are two Campuses, the main one near chestnutt hill and a second one in Newton). The rink is near the back of the campus right near the footbal stadium. Easiest access point with close parking is to take the Beacon street entrance, where there is a parking garage (near the corner of Beacon Street and Chestnut Hill Drive). The front of the campus is along Commonwealth Ave, a major road going from the Newton suburbs all the way into the Boston Common. Make sure you take a walk to tour the campus, it is a worth it.

Three options to get there from Logan:

1 - Take I-90 west until exit 17 (Newton/Watertown) and follow Centre Road and Commonwealth to get to the campus
2 - Take I-90 West until exit 18 (Harvard/Cambridge) and follow Harvard Road and Commonwealth to get to the Campus
3a - Take the 1A route though the tunnel and then via the 93 get onto Storrow Drive along the Charles, follow it until you get to Kenmore Square, and then follow Commonwealth Ave to the campus.
3b - Take the 1A route though the tunnel and then via the 93 get onto Storrow Drive along the Charles, follow it until you get to Kenmore Square, and then follow Beacon Street to the campus.

Note bring change for the Toll booths. I-90 has tolls.

Good luck.

Women's Ice Hockey Goaltender Genevieve Lacasse Named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month
Feb. 1, 2011

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's ice hockey junior Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) has been named Hockey East's Goaltender of the Month for January. It is the third time she has earned the honor in her career and second time this season.

Lacasse went 3-3 during the month with a goals against average of just 1.34 and a save percentage of .959. Her victories included her 12th career shutout against rival UNH on January 14, and a decision over then-No. 7 Boston College on January 21, during which she matched a career best with 51 saves.

Earlier in the month, Lacasse helped lead the Canadian Under-22 national team to gold in the MLP Cup, an international tournament in Switzerland. Lacasse won both of her starts, including the final, and stopped all 56 shots she faced.

Also during the month, Lacasse surpassed former Olympian Sara DeCosta (2,324) for second on the Friar's all time saves list. She now has made 2,378 stops, 177 shy of the all time record of 2,555 reached by Jana Bugden in 2006. Lacasse also overtook DeCosta (85) for second on the Friars' games played list. The junior has already played in 89 contests for Providence, and is 26 shy of Budgen's top mark of 115.

Re: PC Friars: 2010-2011 Season Thread

Amazing - I am not sure what is more fun watching her stop the puck or firing the puck up ice - truly a 6th attacker!

No. 9 Women's Ice Hockey Announces The Signing of Four Student-Athletes
Feb. 4, 2011

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Ninth-ranked Providence College women's ice hockey Head Coach Bob Deraney and his coaching staff have announced the signing of four players for the class of 2015. The Friars will welcome forwards Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.), Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.), Allison Micheletti (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and Brooke Simpson (Boxborough, Mass.) for the 2011-12 season.

"We're very excited to announce the early signing of four very talented forwards who we feel could make an immediate contribution to our program next year," said Deraney. "These four players are a terrific foundation to our recruiting class of 2011."

Haley Frade, Forward, Marion, Mass. - Frade is a 5-foot-8, right-shot forward from Tabor Academy. She has also played club hockey for the Massachusetts Spitfires. Through 12 games for Tabor this school year, Frade has scored 21 points on 13 goals and eight assists.

"Haley is a tremendous athlete. She is very skilled and will be looked upon to add offense to our team. She's a tough competitor who will fit perfectly into our style of play."

Beth Hanrahan, Forward, Poolesville, Md. - Hanrahan is a 5-foot-8, right-shot forward from the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid, N.Y. Through 49 games at NSA, she has tallied 68 points on 45 goals and 23 assists.

"Beth is as close to a natural goal scorer as I have seen in the 12 years I have been at Providence College," explained Deraney. "Around the net, the puck always seems to find her and she always knows what to do with it."

Allison Micheletti, Forward, Inver Grove Heights, Minn. - Micheletti is a 5-foot-7, right-shot forward from Rosemount High School and the Minnesota Ice Cats. Through 23 games for Rosemount this season, she leads the team with 28 points on 18 goals and 10 assists.

"Allison has a combination of speed and skill that fits perfectly into our style of play," said the Friar head coach. "Her speed will create turnovers and her skill will allow her to convert those turnovers into points."

Brooke Simpson, Forward, Boxborough, Mass. - Simpson is a 5-foot-8, right-shot forward from Lawrence Academy and the Assabet Valley program. Through 13 games for Lawrence, Simpson has contributed 30 points on 19 goals and 11 assists.
"Brooke is a tremendous competitor that has a knack for scoring big goals in big games. Whenever she steps onto the ice, she has the puck, which is a sign of a very good hockey player. Again, with a team that wants to be aggressive, Brooke is a natural fit. She competes and produces points, which is a consistent theme for these four players," lauded Deraney.

"These players possess all the attributes that make up our program," the coach continued. "They are terrific young ladies and students, come from great families, love to compete and can contribute on the scoreboard. We will look for them to pick up their college careers where they left off in high school."

Our hardest games of the season are in front of us - these last 4 and playoffs. Let's stay focused on that rather than dreaming about next years's team. ;)

Also, at this point in the season, this post could be seen as disrespectful to the senior class - who will be hard to replace.

Sorry no defocus or disrespect meant. I hope the 2010-2011 string has a lot of interaction left!

Re: PC Friars: 2010-2011 Season Thread

Whaler Hockey Fest was a great experience - HATS OFF to all involved at UConn and promoters. Great game! Neat to see the two California girls have a big day on the "out door rink" not sure that was part of their hockey childhood! I am sure it will be a life time memory for all who were there.

Women's Ice Hockey Goalie Genevieve Lacasse Named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week
Feb. 14, 2011

PROVIDENCE, R.I - Providence College women's ice hockey goalie Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) has been named Hockey East's Defensive Player of the Week for games played on February 12 and 13.

The junior backstopped the ninth-ranked Friars to a 2-1, overtime victory over Connecticut on Saturday, halting 30 shots. No. 9/10 Women's Ice Hockey's Bob Deraney Named Hockey East coach of the Year -- Friars' Buie named Rookie of the Year Runner-Up; Bacon, Yung Earn Second-Team All Star status.

March 4, 2011

BOSTON, MASS. - NO.9/10 Providence College women's ice hockey earned several seasonal awards from the Women's Hockey East Association Friday, including the conference's Coach of the Year Honor for Head Coach Bob Deraney.

In addition, freshman Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) was named Rookie of the Year Runner-Up, while senior Amber Yung (Rockville, Va.) and junior Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) were recognized as second-team all-stars. Junior goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) and junior defenseman Jennifer Friedman (San Gabriel, Calif.) earned honorable mention.

It is the second year in a row Deraney has earned Hockey East Coach of the Year and second time overall. He led the Friars to a 21-11-1 regular season record this year. The mark included the program's best non-conference record (9-3) since it joined Hockey East in 2002. It is the sixth time the Friars have reached the 20-win plateau in Deraney's 12 years behind the bench. The Friars reached the mark despite playing just five of their 34 games with a full line-up due to injuries.

Buie enters this weekend's conference semifinals third on the team in scoring with 24 points (11 goals, 13 assists). The output places her second in the conference, behind category winner Marie Philip Poulin of Boston University.

Bacon leads the Friars, heading into the weekend, with a career-best 30 points (16 goals, 14 assists). She also is the team leader in four other categories, including goals, power play goals, short-handed goals and shots taken. Her efforts earned her an invitation to the US National Team's training camp in December.

It is the second year in a row Yung has been recognized as a second-team all star. The senior enters the weekend with a plus/minus rating of +20 and is third on the team with 15 assists. She, too, was recognized this year by the US national team, playing for the Under-22's in an August series against Canada.

Lacasse broke her own, single season record for saves in a season. She enters the weekend with 890 stops, surpassing the mark of 878 she set last year. With 31 more saves, she will tie the career save record of 2,555 reached by Jana Bugden in 2006. She played against Yung in the August Under-22 series and also led Canada to gold in the MLP Cup in January.

Throughout the season, Friedman has been one of the nation's leaders in points by a defenseman. She enters the weekend third among conference blue liners with 22 points (6 goals, 16 assists).

Re: PC Friars: 2010-2011 Season Thread

Today's game honestly could have gone either way. It was a hard fought even game till the last goal went in. In the process, Lacasse broke two records and stopped a career-best 58 shots. The Friars also contributed a respectable 29 SOGs.

Congratulations on an awesome seasons, Friars. And a special thanks to the 5 seniors for their 4 years of commitment and dedication.
