PC Friars: 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: PC Friars: 2010-2011 Season Thread

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's ice hockey junior Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) has been named Hockey East's Defensive Player of the Week for games held the weekend of October 15 through October 17. It is the fifth time the goaltender has won the award in her career.

Lacasse backstopped the Friars to a pair of road victories. On Friday (10/15), she made 31 saves en route to a 4-1 victory over host Syracuse. The netminder followed the performance with a 30-save effort against Colgate on Saturday (10/16), helping Providence win, 2-1, in overtime.

This marks the 3rd weekly honor for PC!

Re: PC Friars: 2010-2011 Season Thread

Haven't seen Miss Anderson play in college, but from looking at the stats both this year and last, and from what I saw when she played summer hockey back in Minny, she's proving to be a great find for Providence. Perhaps a little overlooked coming out of Shakopee High School, which is not a traditional hockey power in Minnesota.

Agreed! This is from the HockeyEast Who's Hot!

Nicole Anderson, PC (Jordan , Minn.) scored twice this weekend, once against Syracuse (10.15) to seal the game at 4-1, and once at Colgate (10/16). She now has 3-3-6 totals and is averaging a point per game

Grr lost opportunity after up 2-0 over RPI. The article has a great overview http://friarfacts.blogspot.com (I like this college student who covers the Friars and writes for BTD) PC is talented but RPI worked hard and stayed in the game.

Next up Princeton

Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario)

Lacasse is originally from Montreal. She played in Kingston Ontario and then at Little Ceasars. She was already a great goalie back in 2004-2006 when she played in Kingston. One year she backstopped her LC team to the NAHA Showcase title, winning the tourney MVP award.

Re: PC Friars: 2010-2011 Season Thread

Friday night was a great night of hockey for Friar fans. It was probably one of the best games in recent history for the Friars. They completely dominated the 1st period and everyone was working together well. There was a little let-down in the second period but the Friars kept fighting till the end. The quote from Deraney in the Friartown Free Press sums it up nicely.

“Put a couple of goals in there, and maybe it’s a different game,” said Deraney. “Against a team like that, when you get opportunities to score, you need to score. If you don’t, it could come back to haunt you. That’s what happened tonight.

“But a lesser team, too, when they went ahead, 2-1, would have said ‘Hey, good effort tonight. Let’s look forward to the next game.’ Not our kids. They’re going to fight until somebody tells them they can’t fight any longer.”

Women's Ice Hockey Goaltender Genevieve Lacasse Named Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week

Nov. 1, 2010

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's ice hockey junior Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) has been named Hockey East's Co-Defensive Player of the Week for games held the weekend of October 29 through October 31. It is the sixth time the goaltender has won the award in her career, and her second such honor this season.

Lacasse stopped 40 shots against fifth-ranked Boston University on Friday (October 29), playing a key role in the 2-2 tie. She was challenged often, including a partial breakaway in the first period and three quality chances in overtime.

Lacasse is now 6-2-1 on the season with two shutouts. She boasts a goals against average of just 1.64, and a save percentage of .949 that is third best in the nation.

The Friars now have won four weekly-awards in the first five weeks of their season. Freshman Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) earned the conference's Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week award on October 4, junior Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) was named the Pure Hockey Player of the Week on October 11, and Lacasse earned her first Defensive Player of the Week nod on October 18. She shares this week's award with Lindsey Minton of UNH.

Re: PC Friars: 2010-2011 Season Thread

Veharanta with two goals 10 seconds apart in the first period and then Bacon in the last minute with an empty net goal. Final score PC 3 - Yale 1. It was a tough slog during the 2nd and most of the 3rd period but the Friars came through!

Next up, BU on Saturday and Maine on Sunday. :D

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's ice hockey junior Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) has been named Hockey East's Goaltender of the Month for October. It is the second time she has earned the honor in her career, the first coming in December of last year.

Lacasse started every game in the Friars' opening month, earning a record of 6-2-1. During that time, she notched the 10th and 11th shutouts of her career, blanking clarkson in a 5-0 decision on October 10, and Princeton in a 4-0 decision on October 23.

The netminder's autumn success includes a goals against average of 1.64 and a save percentage of .949 that's third best in the nation.

Re: PC Friars: 2010-2011 Season Thread

One cool thing  I noticed about PC this year. We are second in HockeyEast for goals per game (sorry, I just can’t recognize Maine’s 18-0 annual blowout of Sacred Heart) with 3.7 goals per game. This in itself is a rarity because over the last few years goals for have only been slightly better than goals against.

The second point is that, unlike BU which has 4.25 GPG, our goal scoring is more evenly distributed. BU’s top two scorers have scored 56% of all goals vs. PC’s top two scorers which have scored 38%.

Go Friars!!

Re: PC Friars: 2010-2011 Season Thread

A little inspiration (and admiration) for big-game Saturday :)

Hall induction caps Granato's trail-blazing career
Although hockey remained her first love, she all but decided to attend the University of Wisconsin to play soccer. While women's college hockey was gaining popularity at that time, only one school -- Providence College -- pursued Granato for its hockey team.

"I was literally between going to Providence for hockey and Wisconsin to play soccer," Granato said.

As soon as she found out she was accepted to Providence in late July, she made her decision.

Hockey it was.

"I don't know the circumstance. If I did play soccer at Wisconsin would I ever have known anything else?" Granato said. "Would I have ever put on my skates again? It was really interesting."

Granato's decision quickly was rewarded. She was named Rookie of the Year in her first season with the Lady Friars. In four years at Providence she set school scoring records, which she still holds to this day, for career points (256), single-season points (84), and career goals (139). She was named Eastern College Athletic Conference Player of the Year three years running, from 1991-93, and was named an ECAC All-Star four years straight. She also led the Lady Friars to back-to-back conference titles in 1992 and '93.

"When I ended up going to Providence, hitting the ice for the first time and being a part of the team, it was like, 'This is the greatest thing ever,'" she said.

Re: PC Friars: 2010-2011 Season Thread

Not a pretty win, but a win none-the-less :) It is great to bring the Mayor's Cup back to PC after the 5-1 loss last year.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.) scored with just 58.9 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Providence College women's ice hockey team a 3-2 victory in the 16th annual Mayor's Cup.

The game-winner was set up by a face-off to the right of the Brown goal. Friar co-captain Alyse Ruff (Tualatin, Ore.) won the draw cleanly to Cottrell on her left. Cottrell's initial shot was blocked but she hammered the rebound past Bear goalie Katie Jamieson for her sixth of the year.

Brown scored the lone goal of the first period, despite being outshot by the Friars 12-6 in the opening frame. At the 16:11 mark of the first, Brown broke on a 3-on-1 break with senior Erica Kromm carrying the puck on the right wing. Kromm sent a pass toward the net that was redirected home by a cutting Laurie Jolin for a 1-0 Bear lead.

The Friars got on the board 5:19 into the second period. Sophomore Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario) won the puck back to junior Jen Friedman (San Gabriel, Calif.) at the point. The defenseman blasted a slapshot through a screen in front and into the back of the net for her second of the season and a 1-1 hockey game.

Four minutes later, PC took the lead. Junior Abby Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) skated out from behind the Brown net and attempted a centering pass. The puck hit a skate and appeared to travel in between the goaltender's pads. It remained loose, however, until junior Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) poked it home for her team-leading 12th of the year.

Thirty-nine seconds later, at the 10:11 mark of the middle period, Brown's Jolin re-knotted the game by turning on a loose puck in the slot while falling down. Her second of the game sent the teams to the second intermission tied, 2-2, and setting the stage for Cottrell's heroics in the third.

Providence goalie Genevieve Lacasse made 26 saves to earn her tenth win of the season. Jamieson stopped 33 shots.

Re: PC Friars: 2010-2011 Season Thread

A very strong showing this past weekend for the Friars resulting in two HockeyEast weekly awards.

No. 9 Providence College Women's Ice Hockey Earns Two Weekly Awards
Jan. 24, 2011

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's ice hockey goalie Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) has been named Hockey East's Pure Hockey Player of the Week. In addition, the ninth-ranked Friars earned the conference's Team of the Week honors.

Lacasse led Providence to wins over two, nationally-ranked opponents. On Friday, January 21, the junior matched a career-best of 51 saves to lead PC past No. 7 Boston College, 3-1. The effort included 33 stops in the third period, with much of the pressure coming during an extended 5 on 3 disadvantage.

On Saturday, Lacasse halted 35 attempts to guide the Friars past fellow No. 9 Northeastern, 2-1.

For the season, the netminder now sports a save percentage of .945 that ranks third in the nation. Her goals against average of 1.73 ranks eighth nationally. Also of note, Lacasse needs just one more save to tie former US Olympian Sara DeCosta for second on the Friars' all-time saves list. DeCosta reached 2,324 stops in 2000. Lacasse only needs 232 more saves to tie the Friars' all-time save record. The current mark of 2,555 was set by Jana Bugden in 2006.

It is the first time Lacasse has won Player of the Week honors. She has won the more specific Defensive Player of the Week accolade seven times in her career. This is the third time the Friars have garnered the Team of the Week acknowledgment this season.
