Patty Kaz

Good question... Chu who set the freshman scoring record did so in an era of ridiculous scoring and was outdone by her teammate who won the Kaz anyway, and Chu didn't make the final 3.

Agosta made the final 3 playing in a weak league.

Räty was the other freshman to make the final 3 but she was a goalie so tough to compare.

I guess my answer to that is that the answer appears to be no. In fact, Watts' PPG numbers would be 7th all time among Kaz winners (keeping in mind scoring back in the day was absurd with a dozen goals scored every other game) and is comparable to Coyne's.

Agosta played in a league with 4 teams total. So she played 20 games against ECAC and Hockey East teams. Plus CHA team Robert Morris had future Olympian Brianne McLaughlin in net. Plus, as a freshman Agosta had character players and a couple of sweet players out of Quebec on her team. She was not playing with the Under 18 Alumni team that Watts does. You make a good case for Watts, but it’s not a slam dunk. She’s done everything she possibly could, but hey so did Agosta.

Re: Patty Kaz

Cutting to the chase a little bit, has there ever been a freshman contender as strong as Watts?
Agosta was stronger than Watts, but Mercyhurst was viewed as more of an outcast in those days. However, Agosta didn't debut in an Olympic year, so she would have had to overcome better competition for the award. I'd say it's somewhere around 50/50 that Watts wins. But it will be a lot funnier if Bach does. :D

Re: Patty Kaz

I'm lazy, so can someone give us a list of the jr's & sr's only so we can debate whose is going to win?

Re: Patty Kaz

So I had a dream last night after watching the movie "12 Angry Men" on DVD. In the dream there were 12 men and 1 woman in a room and they were voting on who should receive this year's Patty Kazmaier Award. After much heated discussion the votes stood at 6 for freshman Watts, 6 for sophomore Lonergan and the 1 woman (who looked a lot like Jane Fonda) voted for Clarkson senior goalie Tiley. The woman provided many sound and reasoned arguments as to why Tiley should win. She finally asked the 12 men if they had even seen the 2 forwards play. They had to admit not very much but were voting mostly just on the basis of their stats. They all admitted they had seen Tiley play dozens of times in 4 years including in last year's championship game when she outdueled the award winner 3-0. Finally, the dam broke and 1 of the men (who looked a lot like Owatonna born actor E.G. Marshall) switched his vote to Tiley. Eventually 11 men voted for the great goalie from Clarkson and that is how Shea Tiley became the 2018 Patty Kazmaier award winner. The 1 hold out for Watts (who looked a lot like an angry Bronx born Lee J Cobb) stomped out of the room declaring, "The most deserving player didn't win." No one really paid much attention to his outburst though.;)

On this board, we refer to '17 Angry Men'.

Thank you. I actually think Bach is going to win, partly because she's a senior, but I could be wrong, and usually am, going back to Darwitz in 2005. She wasn't outgoing enough then, I guess. And 7 shorthanded goals certainly helped Wendell.

As was said by a person wiser than me..."USCHO exists specifically for moments like this".

Re: Patty Kaz

Hockey East Player of the Month
Victoria Bach - Boston University
Forward; Milton, Ontario

Bach led the league with 13 points thanks to a conference-best seven goals. She also tallied six assists. Bach also led the nation with a whopping 7.75 shots on goal per game in February. She also won the most face offs in the league, securing 113 draws. No other player in the league scored a goal in more games (6) than Bach did during February. Three of her six assists came on game-winning goals, and she tallied at least two points in all three playoff games. Bach recorded a point in all but one game and posted five multi-point efforts.

Runner-up: Caitrin Lonergan, BC (Roslindale, Mass.)

Hockey east Rookie of the Month
Aerin Frankel - Northeastern
Goaltender; Briarcliff Manor, New York

Northeastern freshman goaltender Aerin Frankel led all Women's Hockey East first-year netminders in wins (4), shutouts (1), goals against average (1.55) and save percentage (.939) during the month of February. She appeared in six of her teams eight games, including two playoff games against Northeastern. Frankel allowed two goals or fewer in five of her six February appearances, and allowed one goal or fewer in four of those games, including a 34-save shutout of Vermont on Feb. 16. She won her first two postseason appearances, guiding the Huskies into the semifinals that will be hosted at Matthews Arena on March 3. Her four wins were the most of any rookie netminder in the country.

Runner-up: Daryl Watts, BC (Toronto, Ont.)
