Patty Kaz 2012

Re: Patty Kaz 2012

Coyne is very fast. Faster than Kessel? I don't know. Maybe at some point, I'll get a chance to watch them on the same ice and can better make a comparison.

She might be. Would love to see the comparison, either in Duluth this year or maybe you guys can come to Matthews next year.

Would love to see Schelling get her due and put another banner in our rafters.

What do you think is the best case for Schelling to win at this point?

Of course I think this weekend is going to be crucial -- I don't think Schelling has a chance without Northeastern winning the Hockey East title. Best case scenario is she's Hockey East Tourney MVP and someone not in the top 10 is the WCHA tourney MVP.

Definitely if UMD won the WCHA and someone other than Cornell took the ECAC, then Schelling's candidacy looks pretty good if NU wins, even if somebody like Coyne were to be named MVP. Conversely, if UW takes the WCHA and Rigsby is MVP, that isn't necessarily a bad outcome for Decker.

She is a a strong candidate for HEA POY which will help, top player in either the 2nd or 3rd best league. We need to win the HEA tourney (for various reasons) but she let up one goal to PC in our last two meetings and was solid in the Beanpot against both bu and bc. For the semi against bc, I had been sweating it out and biting off nails all game, but when it came to the shootout I was much more relaxed actually, I was confident the way she looked out there. So summarizing that we win HEA and there is a shutout and the other game she holds them to maybe a goal or two I think she gets a huge bump.

I think she will be a top 3 finalist with one of the Lams and from what I read here Decker (I don't follow the WCHA except what I read on here and look at scores). She will probably be the underdog of the three but she has a legit shot at it.

Nice article on Prevost, #1 Kaz nominee snub.

Re: Patty Kaz 2012

Decker is WCHA Player of the Year, so I guess that shows how the WCHA coaches would vote, although these things often come down to vote splitting. McKeough is Defensive Player of the Year, even though she didn't make 1st team All-WCHA.

Re: Patty Kaz 2012

Also, WCHA Player of the Year you have some different criteria from the Kaz. On the Kaz you might give more weight to academics and to clutch play. We know the Lams have 3.50+ GPAs. That could mean only a difference between 3.51 vs. 3.49 difference, but the Kaz voters know. For WCHA Player of the Year, you might give more weight to your role in a regular season championship.

Plus there's still a postseason tournament to be played this weekend. So I wouldn't read too much into this WCHA Player of the Year outcome.

JLam had a 3.877 GPA. I do think this will propel her to the Patty!

Re: Patty Kaz 2012

Quite a shakeup in the Kaz race today with both Wisconsin (Decker) and North Dakota (JLam) falling in the semifinals, and then Rebecca Johnston with a 5-point ECAC semifinal against Quinnipiac. This could be a pretty huge weekend for her candidacy if she has a similar performance against SLU and leads Cornell to the No. 1 overall seed. Biggest knock on Johnston's her candidacy is fewer overall points (yet still better than JLam in points per game against teams under consideration), and most likely her GPA isn't as strong as JLam's based on the scholar athlete info available. As ARM said earlier, Johnston's overall numbers are comparable to Prevost, but I think that's more a compliment to Prevost than a knock on Johnston. And then Schelling also has a big opening this weekend as well. This'll be interesting.

I think Spooner should get some serious consideration; although she probably won't because of being on a somewhat marginal team.

Compared to other candidates, she didn't have near the supporting cast on her team. Yet it seemed like on nearly every shift, she was a threat to create a scoring opportunity. I think she was the most dynamic and exciting player in the WCHA this year.

Further shake-ups with Cornell(Johnston, Fortino), Mercyhurst (Bram) and NU (Schelling). At this point, Kessel is the only undefeated player.

Re: Patty Kaz 2012

How many goalies have posted three straight shutouts in a conference or NCAA tournament? Surely Raty is one, and Lacasse may join her. I think Vetter was always just short of that mark.

Vetter had three straight in 2006-07, but she didn't play in the WCHA final, so it was over a stretch of four games (one of which was the Harvard 4-OT affair, so was really two in one). So, I'd add Vetter to the list.

Re: Patty Kaz 2012

I guess Vetter's personal streak that year was actually four games, as she had another shutout in the WCHA quarters, along with the WCHA semi, the NCAA quarter (4OT), and the NCAA semi.

Re: Patty Kaz 2012

Congratulations to Briana Decker! Great player. Fine representative of the sports outstanding student athletes as the 2012 Patty Kaz Memorial Award winner.

Great person and great family. Everyone from her SSM family congratulates her.

Re: Patty Kaz 2012

Agreed, Decker is an excellent choice. After watching Johnston play yesterday, I've now gotten to see all of the Top 10 play in person at some point, and they all impressed me as great hockey players. Congratulations to all, and especially #18 for the Badgers.
